My current work in progress:

1. Drachenfels, designed by Melanie Berg, knit from Madelintosh Pashmina in the Black Walnut, Seasalt, and Mineral colorways on a 4 mm (U.S. size 6) needle.

A Critter Knitters Blankie!

blankie033004 A Critter Knitters Blankie!

Yup, I finished my first Critter Knitters blankie — this crocheted in Plymouth Encore Chunky using a K hook.

Considering I haven’t crocheted for nigh on 20 years (and even back then only knew the basic stuff) I’m satisfied with the results. My goal was to not end up with a lopsided blankie and I succeeded. This baby is 18″ square.

In the afterglow of my crochet success, I’ve started crocheting a 24″ blankie.

Remember . . .

We are not just accepting knit and crochet blankets during this project — sewn and quilted blankies are welcome too! Be sure to check out the Critter Knitters website for guidelines on materials and sizes.

I strongly encourage any and all of you to consider making blankets, whether knit, crochet, sewn, or quilted. Because it’s for a great cause. Because you’ll feel good doing it. And because there is an absolute boatload of wonderful prizes there for the winning!

Lucy says . . . please?

Flora Collar

Plugging away on my Flora collar. It’s fun to knit, but slow-going in the undeniably funky two-color garter stitch. But the reslts are very pretty, so I don’t mind the painstaking nature of the work . . . much.

Colinette Poncho!

Just for grins, I wound my Colinette yarn for my poncho into balls.

Diet Coke With Lime

I see I am not the only aficionado of this nectar of the gods. I was asked if it’s hard to get here. I can find it easily in the grocery store, packaged in a variety of ways.

But at the office it’s a different story. In the building where I work there are three places where you can buy bottled sodas, and two of them have started stocking Diet Coke with Lime. Both places were clean out of it last week because the distributor who delivers it was out of it. There was much consternation.

I was happy to see it back in stock on Monday. But now I’m afraid they’ll run out before the next visit from the distributor. I ordered –excuse me– asked a couple of my team members to kindly not buy any so there would be more for me.

Yesterday, these two team members, who shall remain nameless (but you know who you are, Fred and Monica), conspired to purchase bottles of Diet Coke with Lime, then stood outside my office door and opened said bottles in unison, in flagrant disregard of my order –er– request.

This is insubordination to the highest degree.

Comments

  1. The blanket looks great! I think this is a great cause, and given the high correlation between knitters and pet owners, should be a huge success! I plan to make a couple of blankets myself. Thanks for organizing this!

  2. Your co-workers could have bought you a bag of lemons and a case of coke and told you to ‘do it yourself’…. do they read your comments, too?

Ooooo, your poncho yarns are yummy!

  3. My DH is hooked on Diet Coke w/Lime. He’ll drive to a gas station on the other side of town just to buy it as it seems to be the only place around here that sells it right now. I work downtown and can find it everywhere. My mom lives out of the country and even THEY can get it at their local grocery store. Weird, huh?

My blankies for the Critter Knitters are done. Now I just have to get them packed up & shipped out.

  4. O.K.,my name isn’t L-B,but I’m nosy !
    I’m guessing that’s your Colinette stash.Nice !
2 colour garter stitch is bizarre to knit.Your collar is looking nice.I might add one to Strathglass, when I eventually get there. :0)

  5. My name is L-B and I’m green with envy! Yes,Wendy, you win! ;-)

  6. From one Lime Diet Coke lover to Another

Are you sure Lucy is saying “PLEASE”? It looks more like she is saying “I am the Supreme Cat. It is my will that you knit blankets, you silly humans. OBEY”

I have three cats and their comments fall more along the second lines as well.

Ahhh – we only live to serve : )

  7. I bought a 12 pack of DC avec lime solely on your recommendation and I must admit to be totally enamored upon a single sip. BRAVA!

  8. Diet Coke with Lime has been on sale at the local grocery, 2 20 oz bottles for $1. I have stocked up! :) Looking forward to seeing the poncho.

  9. Your poncho yarn is so yummy. I wish I could touch it.

Flora’s collar looks tedious. It’ll be beautiful when you finish it.

  10. Mmmm….Diet Coke with Lime. It’s amazing how they were so far off the mark with the Diet Coke with lemon (yuk, pthew pthew!!) and yet they seem to have “gotten” it with this one!
I’ll still look for the lemon packets when I frequent a fast food joint and add it to my Diet Coke. You remember Pepsi Light? Short lived in the 80′s, but a rather good attempt at diet cola with lemon.
Oh, and your Flora and blanket, wonderful as usual.

  11. I love Diet Coke with Lime !!

Thanks for giving me a place to get a daily knitting and kitty fix. Unfortunately I am so allergic to cats that I can only enjoy them through others, sigh. Lucy is a doll :)

  12. Everybody looks great, flora and the poncho yarns as well as lucy. mean co workers but i dont drink coke but i might have to try this one;)
I am knitting 12 blankies and sewing like 24 i think i am about halfway done with the knit ones.
all that blanket stitch on the fleece one will be really boring, but the animals need tham and those faboo prizez.
Just a question, can you only win 1???
like if you send in 40 raffle tickets anf 40 blankies can you win more than one prize??
Dont mean to sound greedy just wondering Much love Jocelyn

  14. After I learned that several FDA employees wouldn’t drink anything with Nutrasweet (we have several inter-agency meetings with them), I won’t drink it, either. If I want caffeine, I get it the old-fashioned way — ESPRESSO! :-)

I’m wearing a Colinette sweater today, but I made too big a size, so I’m contemplating frogging and re-making it. My husband thinks I’m out of my mind.

Finally, I’m a bit puzzled about the 2-color garter stitch — why is it any more difficult than 2-color knitting in the round? The only difference I can see is that you turn it, and you have to read the chart both ways.

  15. Karen in MN says:

With all this talk of Diet Coke with Lime, I just had to step over to Target (right next to where I work — hazardous to the pocketbook in the best of days) and purchase a bottle.

    It is good!

  16. Has anyone purchased plain diet coke and a lime, and then squeezed the lime into the plain diet coke? Can you tell the difference between the homemade and the real stuff? I’d be interested to know.
And is it just Diet Coke with Lime? Or is there regular coke with lime too? I make a rule not to drink diet anything. Life’s too short.

  17. You crack me up- My friend Kevin works at the OCC in DC and I sent him your ode to DCLime- he LOVES it too. His reply:
“She’s whacked… I just offered to pick them up some while I was out… and then bring them back lemon saying they only had one lime left…”
    Oh, the corruption in DC!
    Beth

  18. What kind of sweetener does DC with lime have? I love splenda sweetened sodas, but they’re kind of hard to find! :( DC with lime does sound good, though, and I THINK that’s what our Walmart was giving out free samples of…

re: critter blankies: how about handwoven ones? those made on a triangle loom with Patons Shetland Chunky or Plymouth Encore chunky weaves up nicely on the nail frame square looms…

    Hi Wendy!

I am also a Colinette fan. What is the yarn in the top right corner of your 6-skein photo?

  20. A Co-worker says:

    Just for the Record People:

I am NOT a mean co-worker!!! Just a thirsty one!! who is also praying we don’t run out of Lime Diet Coke around here this week!!!

  21. Hi, Monica! Be good to Wendy–she may have size 0 dps in her pocket! ;-)

  22. Now who could resist a plea like that from the gorgeous Lucy? I’m off to Michael’s today to pick up some Homespun.

Happy to be back reading your blog after a weekend away. As always, impressed as heck at your progress on Flora.

I am nearing the bottom of the armhole on my Dale baby sweater and I have a question about armhole steeks on Dales. Do you actually cast on for armholes or do you follow the Dale instructions and just continue in the round and trust that those 4 stitches are enough?

  23. Hmm.. Is Diet Coke Nutrasweet.. it says aspartame. Are those the same? I also like Splenda sodas… (of course there will be something wrong with Splenda in a few years) and I drink mostly the Diet Hansen’s Soda. I also make my own with Nature’s Flavors Splenda syrups and club soda.

Flora is looking awesome. I am totally envious of your speed!

  24. For those wondering, diet coke with lime is sweetened with nutrasweet. We get free soda at my office and that’s usually the first one to get finished off by the developers on my floor. I usually grab a six pack out of the fridge and hide it in my desk so that I can have some. :)

Flora looks wicked awesome and Lucy looks quite regal. I remember reading the following in someone’s email signature a while ago:

Cats were once worshipped as gods. They have never forgot this.

    So true…

  25. sorry i posted twice
    jc

  26. One of my buddies at work offered to bring me a soda and brought me back a diet coke w/ lemon instead of lime. I sent him back. He was a good sport; he went.

  27. Hey-a Virginia is for Lovers blog ring! How great! I lived in Alexandria for a couple of years in my youth. I really wish I lived there now! Knit Happens and Wendy! Big reasons to move back, hee hee. I wonder if my husband would be up for a relocate?

  28. E J Michel says:

anyone a diet vanilla coke fan? i hoard them from both the newstand and the cafeteria – and oh well, whats another chemical..
