St. Lucia Day

Today, December 13, is St. Lucia Day. Long-time Wendyknits readers may remember this story.

Yes, I’m hauling out old blog entries and offering them up again. To all you ScandiHOOvians (to quote Share) out there, Happy St. Lucia Day!

We Are Amused

So said Lucy. She is pleased that you all noticed how nicely the cat blanket shawl complements her coloring. So much so that she consented to pose for another photo.

What we will not show is the brief but ugly power struggle that ensued. I won, and the shawl is now hanging over the back of my desk chair at work.

Lucy is not nearly as amused now.

Not too much knitting tonight. Baking scones for the office party tomorrow, dontcha know.

I did, however, spin up some yummy Coopworth roving. It drafts and spins like a dream. As easy as pie.

Pronounced, of course, as Eric Cartman would: “Paaaaaaaaaaah.”

Reader Q&A

Margene asked, about my Koigu Kersti:
Are you knitting with two skeins at a time?

Um . . . er . . .um . . . no I’m not. *blush, blush* Busted!

I’m throwing caution to the wind. And so far, so good. More than I deserve.

That shawl design looks like a wonderful solution for showcasing a few different sorts of handspun yarn together. Did the gauge match exactly between the different yarns?

Pretty darn close in gauge, I’d say. No appreciable difference.

Fun Giftie!

From L-B, chocolate penguins!

I adore penguins.

  1. Happy St. Lucia day! I was in Stockholm for St. Lucia day one year, and it was just wonderful. Went to this huge celebration in arena, and it was too much fun!

  2. Lovely shawl, Wendy!! You knitting with your handspun so quickly prompted me to finally do something with mine. I finished a scarf today that I’m just absolutely in love with now..hehe. My handspun had been sitting on the shelf since last year when I spun it up. Thanks for the inspiration!

  3. omg- if you love penguins have you checked out the stuffed penguin pattern on Knitty.com?
Its called Pasha and he is adorable and knits up quite quickly…
you hafta check it out … if you havent already i mean;)

  4. Happy St. Lucia Day, Wendy! (In my head, I’m now singing the Johnny Cash song that has the verse about the “burnin’ ring of fire.”)

  5. Happy “Lucy” day! But wait-isn’t every day Lucy day? Love her fluffy highness!

  6. I would adore penguins too, if I had a flock of chocolate ones….

  7. I should say a rookery of chocolate ones!

  8. So is Lucy named after St. Lucy, or did she happen to have that name when you got her? I haven’t been “here” for that long, so I missed her adoption! I have to admit, the first thing I noticed about the finished shawl was how beautifully it went with Lucy’s fur!

My daughter’s cat is currently trying to confiscate a very soft microfleece blanket my son made as a school project. His cat is being very nice and letting her share. I don’t know if my son will ever get to use it! Kitties are good at finding, and taking over, the newest, softest item in the house. Too bad my son can’t take it to school and drape it over the back of his chair!

  9. Penguins! Have you seen those adorable fairy penguins? You can get toy versions of them online at Philip Island Penguin Parade, complete with handknit sweater, and a part of the proceeds goes to research and protection.

P.S. You know that the St. Lucia story has always been among my fave Wendy posts, don’t you? You’d better haul it out every year, missy.

  10. Hi Wendy,
in some cities in Northen Italy we celebrate St. Lucia, too. My (German) DH knows this and gave me a present: a knitting book!!

  11. Hey Wendy,

Do you have your Pepperkakkor(sp) Cookies made yet? They are my favorite Xmas cookies.

But, as Janet noted, EVERYday is really Lucy day at casa wendy, no?

Hmmm, no DOUBT had to wrestle HRH Lucy off that delicious shawl, which, is amazing becoming to her… being her exact colors. Who can blame her for being bent?

Ah, but being the sage being she is, I am certain she knows that eventually (all in good time) that very special shawl will return home and then, my pretty …

Thanks for sharing that story. I feel like I always post the same thing here: you continue to amaze me with the speed at which you knit –no, create amazing things. Is speed knitting intrinsic to Scandanavian genes?

  15. (I’m behind in my blog reading, so this is commenting on a post from a while back….)

Oh how I wish I still lived in DC and worked in Old Town – I’d get to meet you and sing Tommy with you and hang out at Knit Happens! There are very, very few people out there with any kind of appreciation of that particular skill – my mother took us as teenagers to see the movie. I watch it any time I can – what a freakshow, but comforting to me in a macaroni & cheese kind of way!
