My current work in progress:

1. Mighty Mini, designed by Rachel Henry, knit from Socks That Rock Worthy in the "Tanzanite" and "The Green That Sings" colorways on a 3.0 mm needle.
2. Myriad stealth projects.

Why Do I Need a Second Wheel?

That was a question in the comments to yesterday’s blog entry.

For starters, the Lendrum is a portable folding wheel (yes Claudia, I ordered the custom padded bag for it as well!) and Katarina is not. I’ll be able to take Lenny with me to Remote Locations. Ooooooooh.

But I won’t be taking Lenny on my commute on the train. Still . . . wouldn’t that be cool? Spinning on the train during rush hour?

Another alluring thing about Lenny is his plying head with the extra large bobbin. That’ll be very handy. He also comes with a fast flyer.

But I liked Juliette’s answer best: “Because.”

Tree Watch

The fake tree is up.

lucy122204 Why Do I Need a Second Wheel?

I’m sorry, what was that? I’m supposed to decorate it too? Aw, crap.

Can Anyone Explain This?

How can TBS possibly think it’s a good idea to show the movie A Christmas Story over and over and over starting 8pm December 24th straight through until 8pm December 25th? Am I missing something here?

And I just realized that I haven’t seen a tv listing for It’s a Wonderful Life once this month. Huh?

Alert the Media

Lucy and I are going to wrap presents tonight. As soon as I post this I’ll be making myself a very large Margarita indeed and giving Lucy a big ol’ pinch of catnip. And then we’re gonna dive in with both hands and both feet. And four paws. Hijinks will no doubt ensue.

In Case You Are Wondering

What did I do with the blue Coopworth yarn I spun? It went to a happy home!

Didja Notice?

There’s like no knitting content in this post? I did finish my stealth holiday project at lunch today, but I can’t post a photo because the giftee reads my blog. And I’m devoting the evening to cleaning and gift wrapping. So instead of knitting content, all you’ll find here are dusty dry tumbleweeds.

Sad, really.

Comments

  1. Wishing you, Lucy, your spinning wheels, other random family members and your naked tree a very Merry Christmas.

    AA

  2. Frequent reader, seldom comment…but had to share that NBC aired “It’s a Wonderful Life” sometime around Thanksgiving.
Happy Holidays to you and Lucy from me and Piper (who is jealous of Lucy’s many mice)!

  3. Hi Wendy,
I was also going to let you know that It’s a Wonderful Life was on Thanksgiving weekend, but they usually air it on Christmas weekend too. Check on NBC, they have the rights to it. Your comment about taking your spinning wheel on the train gave me a funny image of you in the train station spinning yarn with a little hat on the ground for donations. Do people play music in the train stations in D.C.? Have a merry Christmas.

  4. Lucy doesn’t look too pleased with the tree! She’s keeping her eye on it.

  5. lenny with his large plying head and extra large bobbin sounds kinda naughty ;-0

  6. Looking forward to pics of you and Lenny going at it on some Himalayan peak in the near future!

  7. Not fair! OUR tree is still in a bucket hoping we will find a tree stand somewhere! Hubby took pity on me tonight and made the trip out to search since I have struck out so far! I say, fill the bucket with plaster and hope for the best! Back to the Christmas cards: 5 down, lots to go!

Am I the only one who never liked “A Christmas Story?” Why can’t they run the old 1951 Alistair Sim “A Christmas Carol” instead? What do I care? I will be locked in my room finishing the wrapping until the wee hours anyway (no TV in there), listening to NPR. Good luck with Lucy on the wrapping. Our 3 fuzzy friends think the ribbon is best ingested and then reintroduced to the giftwrap process after an hour or two.

  8. Very glad to see that I am not the only one horrified by the Christmas-Story-A-Go-Go. What will be next!?!

  9. I seem to remember reading somewhere that Turner Broadcasting bought the rights to “It’s A Wonderful Life” and put it out on DVD. So, it’s not on TV any more because they want you to buy the DVD. I suspect, though, it will be shown on TNT Christmas Eve.

  10. So *that’s* why It’s a Wonderful Life isn’t on anymore. I’ve been looking for it, too, ever since I read that the guy who opens the dance floor over the pool is Alfalfa from Our Gang.

  11. Yet another Melissa says:

I just assumed that having two wheels was like having two sets of needles in the same size. Because when your circular 9s are occupied in that jumper you’re making from the last Interweave issue, you need your straight 9s to whip up a scarf for your friend’s birthday. Now you’ll no longer have to finish spinning one fiber before starting another. Pretty soon you’ll be wondering where that third wheel is…. Gee–I wonder if that’s where the expression came from.

  12. I love the Christmas Story and like being able to turn on tbs during various times on Christmas day and seeing scenes I’ve memorized, but enjoy nonetheless. I have trouble imagining that people are really going to miss TBS’s regular programming too much that day.

  13. Not spinning on the train? You slacker! (Only joking!) What a great image though. Would give the other commuters something to talk about.

    Have a good Xmas.

    Lindsay

  14. Wendy, looking at the funny picture where Lucy is watching the Xmas tree, I realised that I have exactly the same “chair” (I don’t know its name in English) in my living room! It is an old one that belonged to my grandma.

  15. Good luck with the present wrapping! Mine was done with a glass of wine and a bag o’ chocolate chip cookies. I survived the wrapping extravaganza but still have gifts to knit and clogs to felt . . .

Can’t wait to see the beautiful yarn Lenny will produce. Merry Christmas!

  16. I want to see the fine, strapping, young Lenny! Bring on the pictures. Merry Christmas, Wendy. You amaze me!

  17. You crack me up! I love how Lucy is looking at the Christmas tree as if she’s thinking, “decorate this baby already”. But you know what? I like my own tree sparsely decorated. Makes the lights look so much more PURDY!

P.S. TBS is doing the Christmas Story marathon again? Sadly, I wish I could get it over here. We’re in dire need of decent Christmas films. I kid you not when I tell you that they showed a TORI SPELLING Christmas t.v. film, dubbed in French, and I nearly tossed my Christmas cookies when I sat through fifteen mins of it. SEND OVER THE MARATHON!

  18. It’s a tradition! We must be able to see twelve viewings of a Christmas Story because it’s a tradition.

  19. Happy Holidays! What is your favorite flavor of margarita?

  20. We bought the movie It’s A Wonderful LIfe just so we could see it every year sans commercials. It wouldn’t be Christmas without Jimmy and the gang.
If there are any errors in this message please blame them on the drugs (now if they would only work!)
Have a very Merry Christmas Wendy and Lucy!

  21. Don’t pelt yarn balls at me, but I absolutely love A Christmas Story. One of the funniest movies ever. They did the same marathon last year…it’s become a classic. But I agree…with the days of Tivo…who needs it on 24 hrs!

Have a Merry Christmas Wendy. I have 10 days off…so maybe I’ll see you at KH over the holidays!

  22. Merry Christmas, Wendy! Enjoy your new wheel. (I’ve learned a thing or two since the first time I was confused that you had bought a 2nd drop spindle.)

If you need some ornaments, stop by my house. We finally have too many to fit on the tree, and I’m actually glad when I see that one got broken (as long as it’s not a special one). Actually, I think you should decorate the tree with yarn!

  23. The Lendrum was my first choice when shopping for a wheel with my head, but Rosie captured my heart. I was also told the folding Lendrum was so popular that there was a six-week backlog of orders and I didn’t want to wait that long. There may be still yet a Lendrum in my future, however, so I will be interested to see how much and for which spinning you use Lenny.

  24. Have a great holiday, Wendy! Juliette’s answer says it best too. Because.

  25. the tbs showing of “a christmas story” isn’t nearly as bad as the 24 hours of “Jingle all the Way” with the gov of California on FX… now that is a horrible, horrible x-mas tradition to be starting!!

  26. Am I the only one who thinks every girl ought to have a man in her life with a “plying head and extra large bobbin”?

  27. Peter Billingsley says:

How can you NOT like “A Christmas Story”?!

    “You’ll shoot your eye out.”

    “It’s a major award.”

Sheesh! Some people have no appreciation for cinematic classics.

  28. I just love the “A Christmas Story” marathon. I wrap to it every year. :-) Funnily enough, I didn’t see this gem for the first time until very recently.

    Brilliant.

  29. with little family, sad as it may seem, the 24 hr. marathon of Christmas Story is one of our only traditions. It’s my husband’s fav.

  30. Congratulations on the new wheel!! That is fabulous!!

You are SOOOOOO hooked! heh heh heh

Well … to be honest … I have Another Wheel on the way, too. I ordered one from Gilbert Consalves (Robin Wheels) when I was at Rhinebeck ~ he just designed a new traveler, and it is SO cute. Couldn’t help myself. Had to have it. No question. But, at least I have about a year to save up for it :-)

I have a dining room full of fiber that’s just arrived from all parts of the globe (I say with a wicked snicker and wiggling eyebrows). 8 boxes from the mill, all ready to go … a big bag from Scotland, also processed and ready to go, and two big, huge horse feed bags from Great Britain ~ but this is all raw, so it’ll be a while.

Hope you have an absolutely wonderful Christmas, and look forward to seeing you in 2005!

    Love, Jen

  37. Hi Wendy, Is here any chance that you’ll be posting pics of the Christmas presents you made (after the holiday, of course)? I made a few hats this year but would love to see what goodies others have come up with. I’m so unoriginal!

“It’s A Wonderful Life” is listed for Christmas night at 8 pm on NBC – at least according to my newspaper.

Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year to you and Lucy!

Marie (the one with a blog)

  38. Ooops, I’m the one WITHOUT a blog. Sorry.

  39. Lenny will love his little excursions (as does Fiona, my Lendrum DT)

Spindles are for the train ride.

And yes, BECAUSE. Wheels are like flowers – beautiful on their own, but best in bunches.

  40. 24 hours of the same movie? Yuck! I enjoy seeing many of the Christmas Classics. Meet Me in St Louis, Holiday Inn and It’s a Wonderful Life top my list!
    Have a wonderful holiday!
    P

  41. Twas 2 days before Christmas, when all thru the place, everyone was wrapping, and Lucy WAS stirring… So there! (Never said I was a poet.)
I am still trying to decide if I want to learn to spin, I already have enough hobbies/projects/UFO’s for a long while…
    Have a great one!!!

  42. The Lendrum is a wonderful wheel :-). I ‘ll also get a travelling wheel today, SantaClause has got one for me, I know :-). It’s no Lendrum (in Germany we can’t buy Lendrum), it’s an Ashford Joy :-).

“I wish you a Merry Christmas and a spinning new year….”

    Bine from Germany
