My current work in progress:

Moth Cardigan, designed byAmy Christoffers, knit from Rowan SoftYak DK in the Plain colorway, using U.S. size 3 and 5 needles.

Guilt? Hah!

For the record, not even Snow can make me feel guilty. Here is her attempt:

I hope your retreat is lovely and that you don’t get to feeling horrendously guilty for leaving some of us behind to slave away in our dreadful offices as you knit merrily along on your lovely Mermaid.

Oh, and I hope you don’t miss poor, lonely Lucy too dreadfully. Who will take care of her while you’re away? Will she pine for you, and go off her feed?

In answer to her first point I say:

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

That was very funny.

To address your second point, dear Snow:

Lucy will have some uninterrupted quality time with her daddy, The King of All Remote Controls. Lucy adores her daddy and will be delighted not to have her mommy around this weekend so she can have the total undivided attention of The King of All Remote Controls.

Ah, Lucy. Doesn’t she look abused?

But . . . on to knitting. My progress for today:

mousie110305 Guilt? Hah!

This is a mouse that I made for a sweet kitty who lost his favorite mousie to that bitch, Hurricane Wilma. Oh sweet little kitty, if you happen to be reading this, your mousie is in the mail!

I did work on Mermaid as well. A little.

Katrina asked:
The Mermaid jacket is beautiful and I’m glad to see someone making it, but I’m curious as to what you would rate the level of the knitting involved. Beginner, Intermediate or Skilled knitter?

I’d rate it intermediate. You need to be able to do short rows and i-cords, and follow instructions very closely. But there’s no terribly difficult knitting techniques involved.

What do other Mermaid knitters think?

Okie dokie — I’m off to the wilds of Virginia tomorrow for the Knitters Review Retreat. Depending on what time I get home on Sunday, I might post then. But more likely on Monday.

Y’all have a good weekend!

Comments

  1. Snow is a crack up. Have fun!

  2. Have fun at the retreat! One year I hope to get my name on the list to attend. Your Mermaid looks wonderful. Can’t wait to see it completed next week.

  3. A wonderful weekend to you! It’ll be so extraordinarily stimulating, sleepless and sweet, I’m sure! Lucy and her daddy will have a purrfect weekend, too!

  4. Yup, I expect Lucy and I will have a great time this weekend watching Animal Planet until the sheep come home.

  5. Fine. go then.
    🙂
And look UP, for cripes sake.

  6. YAY for knitted mousies!! Pumpkin LOVES his new mousie and can’t wait til the mail gets here!! Thank you Aunite Wendy!!

  7. man oh man, that snowball is one tough customer. to invoke Lucky like that ….. she’s got ice in veins!

  8. Is Mermaid beginner or intermediate? I am not sure. I found Mermaid very easy, but like you say the instructions must be read carefully. Also I had some trouble with gauge and stitch appearance which I think I share with other knitters, judging from the comments I got.

  9. Diana & Orion says:

A bientot! Have a wonderful time at the retreat. Can’t wait to see what the beautiful Mermaid looks like finished. Cheers to Ian and Lucy — stock up on the greenies and popcorn. Wish I were going with you …maybe next year. Best — us

  12. I began knitting my Mermaid on 7/5/05. I just started on the second sleeve this week. I was able to figure out the instructions on my own, but not without ripping out several times before the underarm gusset. I am extremely pleased with this project and would encourage everyone to give it a try. I bought my kit online from cucumberpatch.com. I’m making the pink/gray version.

  13. Barb Edison says:

Love, love your sense of humor! Mermaid is gorgeous. What will you wear with it?

  14. Oh, have a really great time at the retreat!!!! I am so jealous that you’re going– I need to find out these events ahead of time. 😀

  15. Safe travels and I know you’ll have a blast this weekend!

  16. Have a wonderful time and I’m sure we’ll pine for you more than Lucy will (she has her dad after all) – we’re just left hanging w/ no Wendy. Sniffle, sniffle.

  17. The bottom edging on the Mermaid interests me. Can you explain how it is done (or point me to a book), or is that a copyrighted secret?

  18. I agree with your assessment of Mermaid difficulty. Because it is knit in garter stitch, one might be tempted to call it a beginner garment. But there are extensive short rows and other shapings that keep you focused. I give it an “intermediate” rating too. (By the way, your is looking lovely!)

  19. Does this mean you missed all the Charles and Camilla fun this week??? I was in D.C. Tues-Thurs (fabulous weather) and it was all abuzz. Or maybe that was the whole Article 21 thing. People actually picketed the WH with signs about Princess D! Go figure. There’s a war on, but we’re concerned the nasty prince and his mistress.

  20. I have the kit. But not begun. So I’m looking yours with attention ! but not idea of the level !
    happy knitting
    (mine is in color 5)

  21. i am a sucker for a cute cat picture 🙂

  22. I had a few gauge issues when I started Mermaid (#1) – I ended up having to go up to size 3’s. I vote intermediate – the instructions take some thought if you don’t want to misinterpret and rip back (which I had to do once).

PS – Lucy is *adorable*! What a face. 🙂

  23. Cindy Madden says:

You are soooo bad, Wendy. I had to order a Mermaid kit for myself. Soooo bad.

  24. kelly in new mexico says:

    what an extrodinary sweater!!!
Hope you have fun this weekend while the rest of us wait anxiously for your return?!?!!!!
We don’t like it when you leave……..!
Off the subject though, just for my own curiousity, how long does it take you to knit up a fair isle cardigan? I’ve knit up 4 so far and was just wondering. You REALLY do have to stop with the kits though, I’ve ordered so far 2 mitten kits and your book of course and whatever else you will inspire!!!!But thanks for the inspiration I LOVE to see the things you make…

  25. Stephanie (MOG) – Which Article 21 are you referring to? Is it Article 21 of the Japanese Constitution (Freedom of assembly & association, free speech, free press, etc); is it Article 21 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights regarding participatory government; is it Article 21 of the California Constitution regarding state legislature apportionment; is it maybe Article 21 of the Convention on Biological Diversity regarding finances; is it Article 21 of the Charter of the International Military Tribunal regarding proof; is it Article 21 of the Patent Cooperation Treaty regarding international applications; is it Article 21 of the treaty establishing the European Union regarding individual rights to communicate with the central government; is it Article 21 of the World Trade Organization regarding settlement of disputes; is it Article 21 of the Hague Convention regarding the scope of the application of that convention; is it Article 21 of the UNICEF Convention on the rights of children regarding adoption; or is it another Article 21 to which you are referring?
