My current work in progress:

Corrugated Shawl, designed by Cecelia Campochiaro, knit from Crave Caravan in the Tilly colorway, using U.S. size 4 needles.

Thanks!

Hey, thanks for all the lovely birthday greetings in the comments. I really appreciate them!

Lucy and I had a nice quiet day yesterday. In celebration of my birthday, I even turned on the heat. 😉

There were a few questions in the comments about my Crest o’ the Wave Scarf.

Wave Scarf 010308

I’m doing 7 repeats of the pattern, with 5 edge stitches on each side that I’m working in garter stitch.

I think I’ll stop knitting at the halfway point and cast on again for the second half, and work in to the center, then join the two halves.

There were questions about the size needle I’m using — it’s a U.S. 6 (4mm).

FYI, information about my current work in progress is always posted in my sidebar, over on the right side of the page. Pattern, needle size, and what information I have about the yarn can always be found there.

And if you are on Ravelry, I keep my project notebook pretty well updated with this info as well — my Ravelry username in “wendyknits.”

I’m feeling the need to snuggle with this little girl:

So I’ll sign off for now and be back next week!

First WIP of 2008

My first project of the new year is this:

Wave Scarf 010208

This is a wide scarf that I started New Year’s Eve. I’m knitting it in a traditional shetland lace pattern: crest o’ the wave.

Wave Closeup 010208

(Great minds think alike — Judy at Smatterings posted about her Crest o’ the Wave Scarf yesterday and posted a free pattern. Mine is pretty much the same — just wider.)

The yarn I’m using is special. 🙂

My friend Johanne send me a gorgeous pair of wristwarmers for Christmas, knit from some hand-dyed yarn.

Look at how beautifully the beads match the yarn!

Anyhow, she asked the artist to dye some laceweight to match and sent that to me for my birthday (yes, today is my birthday). Thanks, Johanne!

So I’m making a nice wide scarf to match my wristwarmers. That’s my plan for today: knit and watch television. Hey, it’s my birthday after all. I can do what I want.

Lucy wishes that I would want to turn on the heat — it’s gotten cold. I think I’ll oblige her.

Recipe Binder 010108

Behold, the recipe binder that belonged to my paternal grandmother, Ingrid Johnson. It has recipes in both Swedish and English, some handwritten by Grandma, some cut from magazines and newspapers.

And here is one of her recipes from that binder.

Norwegian Butter Cookies

Cream 1 cup butter and 1/2 cup powdered sugar until very light. Sift 2 cups cake flour, 1/2 tsp salt, and add gradually. Add 1/3 cup ground unblanched almonds and mix well. Chill overnight. Shape into 1/2-inch balls and garnish with a piece of candied fruit or peel. Bake for 10 minutes in a 350 degree oven.

But wait! There’s more!

Prize Cookbook 010108

This is a cookbook, published in 1929, from my birthplace, Worcester, Massachusetts. It was sent to me by a reader (Hi Kate!) a couple of years ago. It’s a compilation of prize-winning recipes sent into the local newspaper, the Worcester Evening Post. Every recipe has the name of person who sent it in, along with her address.

When I received it, I flipped it open at random and on the page it opened to, I found a recipe that was sent in by my maternal grandmother, Trudy Audette.

Do I get extra credit for this?

A Dog in Need

There’s a dog named Phoebe who is undergoing some serious medical stuff after a terrible accident — you can read about her here.

The vet and clinic have generously donated time and expertise, but this poor dog’s recovery will be expensive and has drained their available resources. There’s a Paypal button on the blog entry I’ve linked to above. If you have a few extra bucks, please consider donating.

Rabbitch has posted about this situation far more eloquently than I, here.

Happy New Year!

New Year 010108

Lucy, the KOARC, and I had a nice quiet New Year celebration at home last night. We had champagne, Lucy had some ‘nip, and a good time was had by all!
