As my buddies on Plurk know, I get to my office insanely early every day — by 6:00 a.m. This is not because I’m a morning person (not by any stretch of the imagination) but to lessen commuting issues and stress.
I’m the first person to arrive at my office so it’s nice and quiet. Because my office has a wall o’ windows that faces east, I will often take a photo of the sunrise. I’ll often post these photos on Plurk, and then place them in my Flickr group of sunrise photos, here. My favorite sunrises are the dramatic ones, like this:
A few months ago, Beth at Lorna’s Laces contacted me to see if I’d like to develop a “Color Commentary” yarn with them. Would I? Heck, yes!
She asked me for my thoughts on what I’d like for a WendyKnits colorway. Rather than go with my usual greens and browns, I thought “wouldn’t it be great to have a sunrise colorway?”
Several months and some spectacular dyeing later, Lorna’s Laces came up with this:
WendyKnits Sunrise!
In celebration of this gorgeous yarn, I worked up a simple sock pattern that showcases it to its best advantage.
Here’s a close-up:
This pattern is here in pdf format and will also be linked to from my free patterns page.
Want some WendyKnits Sunrise yarn? I happen to know that The Loopy Ewe (as well as other purveyors of yarn) will be carrying it within the next few days.

Okay kids, I am off to Oklahoma in the early morn and will return late-late Sunday night. I will not be online while I am gone, so I’ll talk to you on Monday!

That yarn is beautiful! Hooray for Wendy and Beth!
I hope I win- it will sell out before I get a chance to purchase it.
Have a good trip and workshop!
Oops, I misread that. I bet you’re not going to see your mom. Maybe Stacy and if so I am more than jealous. Whatever you are doing – make it a great weekend! – I should have looked more closely first – a class weekend. Lucky, lucky people.

Lovely colours in the yarn! Congrats on getting your own colourway.

Sometimes the sunsets here in Houston look like that. Not usually as aware of the scenery in the early mornings!
Wow. A sunrise colorway all your own. Congratulations. It is beautiful.
What great colours. I hope that you have just as colourful a weekend.
Wow, Lucy is a two paws at once groomer! Such talent!!
And like everyone else I’d love a chance at the beautiful yarn.
I would love to knit a scarf in the sunrise yarn!
Wendy the yarn is gorgeous and so very sunrise-y. Love the simple elegance of the pattern
Love the pattern and the yarn colors! So nice to see that your book was well-reviewed by Clara in today’s Knitter’s Review column, which makes for a concatenation of three Wendy-full things all on one day! Good wishes for the Oklahoma visit.
And, oh, please, someday give us a mini-movie of Lucy ‘talking’ to her fans, please???

Lucy kitty you are the sweetest, most darling kitty! Wendy enjoy your trip! C U later! luv.m.
Love the yarn. Congratulations!!!
What beautiful yarn inspired by your great pics of sunrises. I’d love to win some of this yarn. And yes, we do need a sunset to go with it.
I’ll be sure to get some of each if I don’t win any. Cheers from Oz and hugs to you and Lucy-
I really love the combination of purple, red moving through turquoise. What a unique group of colors together. Thanks!
I love that color and I don’t generally like variegated. They didn’t turn out pooling or striping .
The yarn is glorious! I love a good sunrise, but I’m too tired to get up for them most of the time, so I end up being a sunset girl by default–please, come up with a sunset yarn too! I’m going to get some regardless of whether I win or not, but winning would be lovely! Have a good time in Oklahoma!
First the book and now the yarn – WOW! What a great year you are having. But then, what would you expect from all that hard work.
Wonderful!! With winter gales and storms at the moment some sun would be great.
Thanks for the chance!!
Cheers
The colors are remarkable and the socks really capture the sunset theme. Beautiful.
Gorgeous! I love the contrast of the bright red with the cooler colors.
Beautiful colors! Looks like rich jewel tones.
Gorgeous combination when knitted up. Socks that color would look good on my feet.
I haven’t been a big fan of toe-up socks, but this could be the yarn and pattern combination that turns me!
I’ve always wished for the colors of the sky in yarn. There are so many beautiful colors up there. Photo is great, yarn is incredible. Yes, I want a chance to win!
Wow! A Wendy inspired Lorna’s Laces?!?! Its like all my knitting indulgences coming together
Thanks for sharing everything with us
Have fun in Oklahoma!!

Gorgeous yarn!
I love your colorway. I’ll be keeping my eyes open for itI hope you have a great time at the Knit Out in Guthrie. I went last year, but was unable to get there this year, darn it!
And, when I sat down to my e-mail this morning, I got to read Clara’s review of your book. Yep, yep, yep. Right. A definite keeper. The only drawback I see is that I’m having a hard time deciding which pattern I want to knit first.

Love that colorway! Lucy appears to match your carpet or is it the carpet was chosen with Lucy in mind? Have fun on your trip!
Thanks for making a free pattern available (sunrise sock pattern), but I’m having a problem with it. My question is at the bottom…..
The instructions in the pdf are:
Start the pattern:
Row 1: Instep stitches: [K1, P1] across, ending with a P1. Sole stitches: Knit across.
Row 2-4: Knit all stitches.
Continue in this manner, working as many repeats of the 4-row pattern chart as needed until approximately 3” shy of the total length of
the foot.
What happens in row 3? and what 4-row pattern chart?
Thanks again and have a good trip
Regards
Peggy T
Hi Wendy,
I’ve only recently started reading your blog, but I checked out Socks from the Toe Up while at the bookstore this weekend and I loved it! I started knitting socks about 3 months ago, and after trying 1 each of top down and toe up, I’ve decided I definitely prefer toe up, and can’t wait to try some of your patterns. The sunset colourway is also beautiful!
Beautiful yarn and a lovely sock pattern.
I love a DC sunrise! Have a great trip!
Beautiful colorway! You did a superb job of capturing the colors of the sunrise!

The yarn just happens to be my colors! It is beautiful.
Lovely colorway – what a wonderful well deserved honor. Looks like a great pattern too! Lucy is a doll …. *snuggles*. Safe travels.
Enjoy your time in Guthrie–I grew up there and go back to SWAK quite often. It’s a great little town, with lots of pretty Painted Ladies–houses, not, well, you know . . . .
Bit of hometown trivia for you–the intersection just up from SWAK was where Tom Cruise tried to get Dustin Hoffman out of the middle of the street in “Rain Man.” Several other scenes were shot there as well.
Have a great trip!

It’s a beautiful sunrise! I’m an early riser too because I like the quiet before the rest of the household gets moving. And the sunrises are great from my deck. The yarn colors are perfect.
Gorgeous yarn. I’d love to win some. Enjoy Oklahoma.
Lovely yarn! Congratulations on having it named for you. Thank you for making the pattern available. Can’t wait to try it — with WendyKnits Sunrise, of course.
