Still Life With Messy Office

As you can see, the Un-Named Shawl accompanied me to work today.

That’s my Emily Lace Bag (in the extremely cute Dala Horses fabric) behind it.

Don’t think my office looks too messy? Here is the view on the other side of my ‘puter.

What do you think? Do I need a few more photos of Lucy?

Lucy is now wondering if I’m nuts.

Technically It Is Not Exactly Uncharted

Pam asked in the comments to yesterday’s post:

Title aside, do you chart the lace patterns before you start knitting?

Busted! icon biggrin Technically It Is Not Exactly Uncharted

Yes, I do. So calling it “uncharted territory” really isn’t completely accurate, now is it?

There has been a lot of charting and recharting and swapping of patterns and last minute switching with this design, however.

When I started a circular shawl in my Tilli Tomas Elsie yarn that I abandoned, it consisted of completely different stitch patterns. After I decided that I did not want to use that yarn, I completely revamped the charts. And I’ve tweaked them a couple of times while knitting. And just before I started the chart for the section I’m on now, I completely re-did it. And then again as I started knitting, I adjusted it on the fly.

Sort of makes my head spin.

I only did a couple of rounds last night because I had some non-knitting-related work that I needed to do.

But, I have finished the sock design for the Dye Dreams sock club offering for Autumn. You have to click on the link to see the sock.

Clicky here.

I’m very happy with it!

Uncharted Territory

My shawl-in-progress is definitely uncharted territory.

Seanna Lea asked:

What will you do if it you take it off the needles and don’t really like how it looks?

Good question. I’m pretty sure I’ll like it if it is anything the way it looks in my mind’s eye, but you never know. If I find it loathsome, I could always give it away as a gift to some poor unsuspecting victim.

Actually, I don’t have a final disposition in mind for it anyway. It may be destined to be a kitty bed for Lucy.

Cindy asked:

Any idea of the size this will block out to?

Well . . . I’m aiming for somewhere between 60 and 72″ in diameter. I should be able to estimate fairly well when it’s time to stop knitting on the body of it and knit the edging on. I can measure out from the center and stretch as I measure and get a rough estimate of the size.

I bought 4 skeins of the yarn and I’m slightly less than halfway through the second skein, so I’ve got plenty of yarn. The edging I plan to use is a very simple small one, so it won’t take more than half a skein (I think), but I’ll be sure to stop knitting on the body while I still have at least a full skein left. My gut instinct is that I’ll be ready to stop before that anyway. It’ll be interesting to see how close I come.

I won’t name the design until it is off the needles and I can see what I think it looks like.

Oh, and I’ve got an idea for another circular shawl with a construction different from this one. But I’ll finish this first.

On and On and On

That’s where I am on my as yet unnamed circular shawl. Knitting on and on and on.

Shawl071309 240x160 On and On and On

I have done the last set of increases so I am now up to 576 stitches around, so each round is taking a lo-o-ong time to complete. I did make some progress over the weekend, though, even though I did no knitting at all on Saturday as I was busy teaching classes. And very little knitting yesterday, come to think of it.

Since I didn’t bother to swatch, and I changed my mind about a couple of the stitch patterns after I started knitting, I don’t have a really clear idea of how good this will look once it is off the needles and blocked. I picked lace patterns that (to me at least) seem to go together, so hopefully the end result will be more or less pleasing to the eye. But I won’t really know until it’s off the needles and spread out.

I’m betting I’ll be working on this for at least another week, so I have at least a week of suspenseful knitting ahead of me.

I’ve got some of this going on:

Quick Update

I’m back from my quick trip to Delaware — had a great time!

I took the train up on Friday and was met at the station by my hostess, Janice aka Obstiknit (pssst! Janice is participating in a three-day breast cancer walk in October — check out her cancer walk blog for details).

We attended a potluck dinner at her LYS Stitches With Style that night. It was great to hang out with all these fun knitters. Saturday I taught two classes on techniques for toe-up socks, then hopped on the train to come home.

Janice and her 4 beautiful kitties were great hosts — thanks, y’all! And thanks to Linda and everyone at Stitches With Style for making me feel so welcome and ensuring I had such a great time.

Today was for hanging out with my Lucy and doing exciting things like laundry.

I knit some on my still-un-named circular shawl.

Oh, and I drew a winner for the Martha Stewart cupcake book — Mary. If your name is Mary and you entered the contest, check your email to see if you are the Mary, because I’ve send you a message.
