My current work in progress:

1. Ashburn, designed by Melanie Berg, knit from Woolfolk Tynd in colorways 6, 7, and 8 on a 4 mm (U.S. size 6) needle.
2. Myriad stealth projects.

My friend went to Germany and all I got was this lousy box of Wollmeise

Please note that the above title is very much tongue-in-cheek!

If you read my friend Johanne’s blog, Born to Knit, you know she went to Germany last month and entered the hallowed halls of the Wollmeise “brick and mortar” shop. Her post about the visit is here.

Because Johanne told me about her plans to visit the Wollmeise shop beforehand I of course imposed upon her to be my Wollmeise personal shopper.

Johanne packed up the Wollmeise she obtained for me in a box and shipped it to me directly from Germany via DHL.

And yesterday, at long last, this was delivered to me.

Box111609 240x160 My friend went to Germany and all I got was this lousy box of Wollmeise

Opening the box was almost a religious experience.

Here’s what was inside:

I almost had to go lie down after my initial exposure to all that Wollmeise glory.

Here are the skeins, photographed in twos and threes. If you click on each photo, it will enlarge enough so that you can see the colorway name on each label.

I spend the rest of the evening playing with my new babies, building Wollmeise forts and Wollmeise pyramids.

Thank you, Johanne!

In other news, I’m letting my bangs grow out. They have reached that awkward stage.

  1. I wish I had a friend named Joanne who would shop for me in Germany. The green eyed monster in me is drooling over the wool.

  2. Seriously – it almost makes me wish my niece and her husband would get stationed in Germany so I can send her to shop for me. I’m beyond jealous!! :-)

  3. Still in happy wool shock with a stupid half smile….looks lovely!!

liking the bangs (and your hair color!!)
.-= turtle´s last blog ..check it out! and rememberance day =-.

  4. I hit that ackward stage about a year and a half ago. i swept them to the side, ended up like them soo much i kept my bangs lol. i look like a little kid with banges, but i do ponytails most day, and no bangs is too harsh for my face.

try a side sweep, it will work for a bit, and you might just like that better than none at all.

  5. Can I just say….I was going to call you a name here because I have the galloping greedy gimme’s on the Wollmeise, but I decided to restrain myself and tell you what lovely yarn your friend sent you from Germany.

Like the hair color a lot. I need to do the whole henna thing so I have purty hair like Wendy.

  6. Shirley. in PA says:

That’s what I call a friend. How exciting for you.

  7. Oh my. I’m giggling imagining all the fun you’re having building all those little forts and pyramids. That yarn is so beautiful.

As is your hair. I agree with the others who have complimented your hair colour. Beautiful. And I know the pain of growing out a fringe (I’m an Aussie. I’ll call bangs a fringe if i want to!). It will all be worth it in the end. (and if not, you can always cut it off again, that’s the beauty of it. It may take a while but mostly hair grows back. I wish Wollmeise did that!)

  8. Ooooh, what a delicious pile of yarn you have! Lucky you.

  9. I am so jealous I could spit! What a score, what a friend!

  10. DROOL!!!

My sister lives in that part of Germany, and I so need to get her to do a day trip and do some shopping for me

  11. Woohoo! Nice haul! I think Johanne and Claudia picked out some fabulous colors for you!

  12. You lucky duck!!

  13. What a coincidence — I ordered a Mama Bear swift and yarn winder and they arrived today. Don’t you need help winding that beautiful yarn pyramid?!

  14. There seems to be something about the approach of winter that prompts women to grow out their bangs. I only wish mine were as luxuriant as yours. :-)

what, no Johannisbeere? (lol – I so can’t spell that). It’s one of my favorites.

Great colors you have on your hands!

  16. Oh my… that is lovely.

I may have to stare at those photos for a while…

  18. i suspect i will never in my lifetime get to see or touch wollmeise so the vicarious thrill is appreciated.

  19. Lovely. I’m fairly sure that it’s illegal for one person to have so much Wollmeise in this country. Fair trade and all that.

  20. what a great friend and what gorgeous colors!
    .-= Sylvie´s last blog ..I can’t believe it’s been this long since I last posted!!! =-.

  21. I agree–a great haul and a great friend. Better’n chocolate! I’d have to lie down and put it on top of myself for a while. Best thing is, it doesn’t go to your thighs!

  22. What a great friend to go Wollmeise shopping for you! Enjoy your stash.

  23. What a wonderful way to work through an awkward hair stage. Enjoy!

  24. That much woolmeise yarn at once is SINFUL! I am soooo jealous, may your bangs quit growing and never grow again! LOL

Beautiful yarn and colors are to die for. Lucky you.

  25. Brag, brag, brag, all that lovely yarn and teasing us with it. Baa, Humbug! :)

  26. Oh to have such a wonderful friend!

The bangs look very 60′s – groovy!

  27. Oooooookay, I’m back from being picked up off the floor. Just look at all that green-ness-ess-es-s!!! Can Johanne be my friend too, pretty please? Next holiday, my order will be lighter than Wendy’s as I can take it in lace weight… :oP

  28. Weeping, weeping…between your post and Johanne’s, I’m somewhere between jealousy and awe…and I can’t wait to see what you do with some of those lovely skeins (if you ever are ready to take down your Wollmeise forts and pyramids and make them into something else)!

  29. I am so jealous!

  30. I might say that’s borderline gluttonous – but so wonderful!!

  31. I could just faint. Last Dec when we went to Germany, didn’t have
the time to go get some Wollemeise..good for you. Enjoy
    every bit of it…lusting!!!

  32. Look, Mom, no eyes!

Lovely Wollmeise — Uh-oh, does anybody know how to get drool out of a keyboard?
    .-= annalilly´s last blog .."Ribbit" =-.

  33. How did you not become overwhelmed by the fiber fumes? All that Wollmeise, I’d have clutched it to my chest like a favorite teddy bear. Lucy must be jealous that you played with the yarn all evening instead of her!

  34. Yikes, I need to develop some friends who travel and will bring me yarn. Gorgeous colors (OMG you got Boboli). Jealous much, ya think?

  35. Omg! What beautiful yarn.
Yes, your bangs are long. My daughter is contemplating getting bangs again. I said no. She is ten and I can say so. It took too long to grow out and she was going crazy when she had them.

  36. Oooooh.

  37. Oooh, shipping instead of hand-carrying…now there’s an idea. I’m so pleased for your bounty! It’s hard to even imagine a whole shop surrounded by such loveliness – I’ll be there in two weeks – even harder to imagine! I look forward to seeing all the beautiful FO’s from your beautiful yarn – and we appreciate Johanne providing you with more creative inspiration!

  38. Oh what pretty yarn! Oh what pretty hair! Good for you to grow out your bangs. It will look smashing.

  39. I think I need to lie down too.

  40. Oh! My skin went all tingly and I think my heart stopped! Thanks for the yarn porn!

  41. I am just green as a pea!!! You lucky girl!! Ofcourse Lucy took the delivery in stride!!

  42. I was kinda hoping there was a give-a-way contest somewhere in the post. I can dream, can’t I !!! Nice stash enhancement….
    .-= Liz´s last blog ..Dad’s Rocks =-.

  43. A personal wool shopper! Now that’s something I wish I had. You very lucky girl!

  44. I hate that stage of bang growth! As soon as I can, I start frenchbraiding the wisps of bangs and barrette them back. But when my son and husband grew theirs out, that just didn’t work…we used a lot of gel on them, and they looked awful for a while. I French braided them, too, as soon as the bangs could reach the back of their heads (long before it went into their pony tails).

  45. Do you know what I love about the Wollmeise? The smell. I’d be in olfactory heaven if I had a Joanne who would ship me a box of Wollmeise.

Great colour choices. Can’t wait to see what you come up with in terms of designs.

  46. good Luck with the bangs.
I have never seen Wollneise yarn. I really must be shopping in the wrong places or I have never ventured down that lane. have a good day and thanks for opening a new yarn for me. cecilia

  47. Oh, the Wollmeise envy going on here!

  48. I had to walk away from the computer. OMG! Whatta haul! She didn’t happen to bring back an extra Pfauenage, did she? Or maybe a Tant Gron? Or Im Dunken Walever? LOL

  49. I’m drooling over that yarnie bounty. That is just glorious. I recently won a skein of this coveted yarn and I’m going to probably cart it around everywhere petting it for a week or more before even breaking into it.

I solved the awkward bang problem by keeping my hair short. I get instead the too long to style problem, but I look a 100 times better with short hair. At least a 100 times better.

  50. Nice box! My KF Tommiann’s hubby is in Wiesbaden (sp?), and we’re trying to convince him that he should drive down to WM store some weekend to buy Tommiann some yarn. She goes to visit every now and then so maybe he’ll take her next time she goes and she’ll share with me.

  51. My son and husband want to do a WWII tour of Eurpoe – I keep telling them if they go to the right place in Germany I just might consider joining them! The WM store must be what heaven is like.

  52. I have a knitting friend who had to travel to Germany on business last month. The bright spot of her trip was to the WM shop – a wonder of color, she says! She was kind enough to bring back yarn for me and a few other friends. I guess I’ll have to return the favor when I travel to a musk ox farm next year…. :)

  53. Religious experience – too funny! I think that many skeins is about all I could manage without passing out. I can’t even imagine how my brain would handle being in the actual store!

    Lovely haul!

  54. Linda in Chicagoland says:

Wow! Even though I haven’t experienced the wonder of Wollmeise, I know this is huge. Looks like taking a trip to Germany is easier than catching a LE or Wollmeise shop update. Congratulations!

  55. Rachel Peterson says:

You have got to be kidding me! I can’t even get close to a skein of Wollmeise and you get a whole box full! (Can’t you just see the green-eyed monster in me coming out?) Nice haul!

  56. My avatar should be a green-eyed monster. I have one skein of Twin in the Paul colorway. I would love to get my hands on the 100%. I tried a coworker in Germany, but he’s 3 hours from the shop. Darn!

I’ve done the growing out the bangs thing–it’s no fun! Time to invest in some headbands and hair clips for that ‘inbetween’ stage.

  57. Oh lucky you! Beautiful yarn!!!

    IMHO… everyone needs bangs

  58. WOWIE!!!!!

  59. My mom wants me to go to Germany with her next year. I think I’d be crazy to say no!

  60. margieinmaryland says:

    I’m NOT jealous !
    Enjoy!

  61. Gorgeous pyramid of yarn! What are you going to knit?
.-= Kim B.´s last blog ..Christmas Ornaments =-.

  62. Oh, the yarn is beautiful! I’ve never had the opportunity to see let alone purchase Wollmeise, but of course I’m going to have to order some at some point because of all these rave reviews! As for bangs growing out: as someone who has gone through the roller-coaster of hair styles many times in the last few years, and as a person who is growing their bangs out (again) I have to report that I am clearly losing my tolerance for dramatic shifts in hair length. The awkward bang phase is lasting a lot longer this time around. Good luck!

  63. I have never used, or even touched Wollmeise yarn, but I keep reading about it every blog I visit, almost. I guess one of these days I’m going to have to try some for myself, just so I know what all the fuss is about. I will say, the colors are truly yummy. :)
