My current work in progress:

1. Strandwanderer, designed by Lea Viktoria, knit from Wollmeise Merino "Pure" in the "Zenzi" colorway on a 3.25 mm (U.S. size 3) needle.
2. Myriad stealth projects.

Shawlette Goals

My goals for this shawlette are to make the pattern easy enough for a lace newbie, and to make it do-able using one 100-gram skein of sock yarn.

Remind me of those goals when I finish it and it’s hideously complex and takes 1200 yards to complete, okay? icon wink Shawlette Goals

Excuses, Excuses

Before I show you my progress pic for said shawlette, you have to listen to my excuses for why I haven’t made much progress.

I had a couple of errands to run after work yesterday, so was late getting home. One of the errands was at the grocery store, where the cashier seemed unable to scan the items that the woman in line in front of me was purchasing, so he took each item, one at a time, back into the store to check the price on the shelf, and keyed each one in manually. One at a time. So much for multi-tasking. He did not call for help until he completed that transaction and discovered he couldn’t start a new transaction for me. The manager came over, and pressed a few buttons and all was well. But that took a good half hour.

I did, however, have a nice conversation about clementines with the woman in line behind me.

And I stopped knitting by 7pm because I was tired. So there.

Okay, here’s my progress pic. icon wink Shawlette Goals

No, I’m not writing a shawlette book. Or a shawl book.

There was a question in the comments about what kind of needles I use for lace — I have been using Addi Turbo Lace needles almost exclusively for lace. I love ‘em icon smile Shawlette Goals

And another question — do I ever get wrist pain from knitting so much. I almost never do, because I tend to take a lot of breaks when knitting. When I am knitting at home,. I am doing so in front of my computer. I’ve got my email and Plurk (my favorite social network) open. So when I get an email, I stop and read it. When one of my friends posts to Plurk, I stop and read it.So, lots of breaks!

Speaking of Social Networks

I keep meaning to say this and I keep forgetting. If you send me a friend request on Facebook, please just mention in the request that you are a knitter or something like that. If I get a request from someone I don’t know, we have no mutual friends, and I can’t tell from the profile if that person is a knitter, I ignore it.

“Hey – why am I not on Facebook?”

Next she’ll want her own computer.

Comments

  1. There was only one check-out line at the grocery store? (I think I must be spoiled.) Can I shamelessly request that now that I’m back on Plurk that you would follow my witty and pithy posts? :-) My Junior Stalker reputation is waning.

Oh, yeah – love the Shawlettes – I’ve been on a kick with them, too.

  2. The new shawlette looks so pretty! I especially love it in that color – one of my favorite MadTosh colorways!

You don’t have a catbook account for Lucy on Facebook??? ;)

  3. Well, I’ve never made any type of shawl but I do have loads of sock yarn, so I’ll watch this with interest!

And my cat Emma sympathises with Lucy. She doesn’t have a FaceBook account either. She just has to make do with having her own photo album on my account instead ;)

  4. I think Lucy better stay off the computer or Tux will want to have time on this one. However, I can’t imagine sweeter friends to have on my facebook account or in Plurk :)

  5. After I finish the little shawl/scarf I’m working on -and a quick pair of wrist warmers- I’m tackling socks 2 at a time from the toe up using your book.

    Whee!!

After that, I’ll be ready to tackle this shawlette too.

    yay.

  6. I’d love a shawlette that takes only 1 skein of sock yarn. I was a cashier for 4 years at the dreaded walmart, and your cashier sounds like a dumbbutt. My wrists hurt all the time from knitting, so thanks for the tip to take frequent breaks-I’ll definitely try that.

    Laura

PS-my dog Jake has a facebook. lol.

  7. Ooooooo . . . Do you need a newbie tester for the new shawlette???? I’ve only done lace once — the Ishbel — and haven’t gotten to the lace part of Aestlight — so I’m still a newbie. Right??? And I have 440 yards of Malabrigo Sock in Boticelli Red just waiting for the right project! :^)

And why isn’t Lucy on Facebook? If a sleeping bear can have thousands of fans, so can a gorgeous kitty!
.-= Cathie Jones´s last blog ..Up and Running =-.

  8. You dont want to give Lucy her own facebook..then you will have to let her play in Petville…and that is very time consuming…Love the color of the new shawlette..

  9. Maybe Lucy would be happy to start with a netbook.
    .-= Ida´s last blog ..We Have a Winner! =-.

  10. My cats Lucy and Linus (yes, siblings) like to walk on my keyboard and lie on my mouse. There is a type of keyboard that recognizes ‘cat tracks’ so gobblygook doesn’t get written all over your screen!!

I think that if Lucy doesn’t get her own Facebook, she should at least start a fanclub on Facebook. I would join that!

  11. Am I the only one who thought that you were starting a singing group, “Wendy and the Shawlettes”? Doo-wop, do waaah! (of course I’m a knitter and know what a shawlette is, the word just suddenly struck me as funny!) :-P

  12. Uncle Lori says:

My cat Rover has a Catbook page. And then there’s Nora Piano Cat, who has her own account (and is a friend of a friend). I think Lucy should definitely be on there – she can’t nap ALL the time!

  13. suncatcher says:

Thank you for sharing those goals. I would so very much like to learn lace knitting on a shawlette (my fave), plus keep the cost down on a beginner project. And from such a beautiful knitter. Your projects continue to awe me. Maybe you’ll make this pattern available to us newbies with lace knitting? :)

  14. I’m your audience. I’ve been wanting to do lace, but don’t want a huge triangle shawl. I’ve been thinking more of a stole, but a shawlette would be a good start, too.

One of the best wrist exercises to provide relief from too much knitting, is to frequently pause turn your hands palms up, curl your fingers, and scratch a cat’s chin.

  15. You could put Lucy on Catbook! I’d invite her to be my kitty’s friend.

  16. Lucy should totally be on facebook!

And I’m very much looking forward to your shawlette for noobs pattern!

    Most excellent. Most excellent indeed…

  17. Lucy looks like her own sheepskin rug in that pic!

  18. Nice you had some one to chat with. Sounds like the cashier was some what “challenged” not to mention a borderline nutball since he did not request assistance. I myself would have been somewhat frantic having to have the clerk go and find each piece for pricing.I hate to delay people in line behind me.
I really like that colour of yarn you are working with. Such a rich colour. Lucy is a show off tonight. Such a pretty girl!!

  19. I love the idea of a lace shawl made of sock yarn that is easy for a beginner. I have a friend who is trying to teach herself how to knit from YouTube. I think a nice little project with sock yarn would be great. She is a life long crocheter so it would help her get her feet wet with lace and continue her knitting education. Great idea!

  20. Hm, Charlene Butterbean is on Facebook. Lucy could be her friend!
    .-= CarolineF´s last blog ..Cambridge Cables =-.

  21. If Lucy doesn’t have a facebook account how does she keep up with all her kitty friends?

Check out the orange grove in Anne’s blog today. Can you imagine picking them off a tree instead of getting them out of a box?
.-= Michele In Maine´s last blog ..Rock ‘n Roll Project Bag =-.

  22. Wendy- If anyone should be on Facebook, it’s Lucy.

  23. Wow, that is one fluffy cat!

  24. Love all the sock knitting, shawl knitting, etc. So creative. So, how about some sweater knitting for a change? Maybe create some cute patterns for those of us who are ready to head back into that arena?

  25. Charlene Butterbean from Itty Bitty Kitty Committee has her own Facebook page I think Lucy should too.

  26. Why isn’t Lucy on Facebook/Catbook? Mack wants to friend her!

  27. It’s (lack of) thumbs, Lucy…. otherwise all kitties would have computers! (And my cat could get a job…..)

  28. I’m on facebook, but I keep forgetting that I might want to add people to my list of friends. I find it is too addictive. Darn you, Bejeweled!

WHY on earth will you not write a shawl book with all the talent for designing you have!

  30. margieinmaryland says:

You stick to those shawlette goals – ESPECIALLY the part about “easy enough for a lace newbie”

  31. i love hideously complex and 1200 yards! i promise to not say a word.

  32. I’ve got a clementine (and a Meyers lemon) in the backyard. We came down to this house in early December and it was already too late for the clementines; they’d dried out too much to eat. However the tree looks so beautiful with its dark green leaves and bright orange fruit that I can’t bear to pick them. I wanted a Murcott (honey) tangerine, but they won’t grow in the Low Desert. The clementine is prettier, though.
