When I was a child I knit a squirrel. The pattern came from a Patons pattern book from the UK, published in the 1960s (though that may have been a reprint from an earlier version). The pattern was very cute — you used a very loopy stitch to create the tail.
The Brooklyn General Store is holding a contest — to create a handmade squirrel. Follow this link on their blog for all the details. There are prizes to be had! You have til the middle of May to get your entries in.

When I was a child I sewed a skunk. It was really cute. I have not knit many animals, but somewhere there are a couple dinosaurs I need to finish. Happy Trails!

I know I saw a pattern for a squirrel recently. It might–just might–be in More Softies Only a Mother Could Love: 22 Hapless but Lovable Friends to Sew and Crochet edited by Jess Redman and Meg Leder. But it may also be sewn, not knit or crocheted. Very cute, though.

The movie Up was the first thing I thought of when I saw the title of this post. Great movie. Thinking of knitting a squirrel just so I can have one on my desk for those distracted moments.
