My current work in progress:

Comfort Fade Cardi by Andrea Mowry, knit from Miss Babs  Kaweah in the Parchment, Old Gold, Petrified Forest, and Espresso colorways, using 3.75mm and 4mm needles.

Round and Round We Go

It’s enough to make a knitter dizzy.

But working on my circular shawl is fun, even though I am increasing 9 stitches with each round I complete. (The shawl is being knit in a spiral construction, and I increase 1 stitch in each of 9 sections.) At this point, I have over 400 stitches around.

WIP050311 240x160 Round and Round We Go

When it is done it will be a whopping 738 stitches around.

But it is fun to knit, and the lovely colorway of the yarn keeps it interesting. This is Dream in Color Everlasting Sock and the colorway is called “Surf.” I love Dream in Color — they always manage to achieve a subtle variegation that does not detract from the pattern I am knitting. And the slight change in color makes it entertaining to knit.

Another good thing about knitting a circular shawl — every row is a right-side row, which means no purl rounds here. I knit a lot faster than I purl.

Giveaways Abound

The Random Number Generator has chosen a winner to receive my copy of 60 Quick Baby Knits — it’s Sarah, who has been emailed. Thank you to everyone who left a comment!

Now, I’ve got another giveaway.

Tomorrow (that would be Wednesday, May 4) the Summer 2011 issue of Knitcircus Magazine goes live, and once again I am hosting a giveaway thanks to our wonderful editor-in-chief Jaala.

I’ll be giving away 2 one-year subscriptions to KnitCircus and 10 copies of the complete pattern collection from the Summer 2011 issue to some of my readers, chosen at random from the comments. So, to be entered to win one of these prizes, leave a comment to this blog post by 11:00am EDT on Sunday, May 8, 2011. At that time the winners will be selected.

By the way, I have deleted both my and Lucy’s Facebook accounts, just in case you are wondering if we unfriended you. The latest spam attack was the last straw — spam was posted to my friends’ walls, purportedly from me, without me being logged into Facebook (or even at my computer) at the time. So that’s enough for me. The only time I ever spend any time on Facebook is to accept friend requests, so I really did not see any point in keeping my account.

  1. I love the circular shawl construction, but Oh 700+ stitches, I could never!

  2. CaroleP (ohio says:

That shawl will be beautiful, as are all your others. It would take me forever. I’d probably be too feeble to wrap it around me.
Thanks for another chance at goodies from Knitcircus. I think I could be considered a pattern/magazine hoarder. Love to have a subscription or the patterns.
I cut Facebook out of my life a couple years ago. Have two teenage granddaughters and didn’t like what I was hearing from them (and trying to keep up with them – after many warnings). Using too much valuable time I could use for knitting! I would hate to see “my” knitting bloggers stop, but certainly understand the probs you all are having.
Keep up the great work, and keep the lovely pieces coming! And by all means, keep Lucy safe!!!

  3. Sorry to hear about the spam attack. Keeps me thinking that not getting a Facebook account might be a good thing ;).

Your shawls have been amazing. I can’t wait to see how this one turns out.

  4. I’m new to your blog, just found it a couple weeks ago, but I’ve really enjoyed reading it. And I love the different pictures of your kitty.

  5. I can’t wait to see this shawl all blocked out, it’s like watching magic happen (I mean the blocking magic, not the beyond-magical speed at which you knit).
Let me just toss my name in for the Knitcircus chance 🙂
Helen´s last blog post ..He’s captured my heart

  6. I cannot wait to see the shawl when it is completed!

Hurray for digital magazines, my physical magazine stack just keeps getting bigger.

Also, yeah facebook is a serious pain… I am looking forward to when there is a new social network, because it is the main way I keep in contact with a lot of people sadly.

  7. Patricia says:

I just discovered your blog and love it. Love the shawl and know the feeling of the endless knitting as I am busy doing prayer shawls, myself. Love the chance to win in a give away too!

  8. Facebook. There is some kind of odd ‘disconnect’ involved, though in theory its purpose is to connect us. I remain ambivalent to it. Blogs, however….three cheers for blogs!

Thanks for the Giveaway Wendy. I love Knit Circus. I completely agree with you on Facebook, I too recently had spam trouble. Crashed my computer and everything! Thanks! Debbie in Alaska

  10. Shannon says:

I’d love to win either the subscription or the pattern collection! And that yarn is lovely. Happy knitting!

  11. Going back to the last post…I would, personally, knit the Royal Wedding shawl!! Wear it everywhere you go and to the queen wave to everyone!!! : )

I’m really sorry to hear about your spam attack!

  13. Lovely shawl! I was just looking at your current total from your Japanese Garden Shawl – that is awesome! I think I need to get a little more adept at lace knitting before I tackle it but I do have it in my library. It’s so gorgeous! Can’t wait to see what this latest one will look like.

  14. PICAdrienne says:

C’mon, random number generator! well, one of these days anyway.

  15. bonnie says:

I’m not on facebook because my kids won’t friend me. I only joined twitter because my son was competing in Brian Wilson’s beard madness contest (he beat The Most Interesting Man in the World but lost to some guy who works for twitter and had 200k followers) and I had to vote for him. I think facebook has peaked. At some point, people will realize there is some value to having a private life.

On another topic, I was waiting for your lace book to brave a shawlette, but am doing a local KAL for Ishbel, and it’s not as hard/confusing as I feared. Which of your shawlette patterns might be appropriate for a newbie, or should I wait for the book?

  16. Another wonderful giveaway I can’t wait to see your circular Shawl.
    Rae´s last blog post ..Dammit

  17. I wish I could delete my Facebook but I need it to keep up with my sisters and the dance team (regular e-mail just doesn’t seem to work with them).

And yay, a giveaway! *fingers crossed*

  18. My, wouldn’t my Mother’s day be just perfect if I were to win a subscription to Knit Circus.
    Thanks for sharing…….

  19. I haven’t been here for quite a while — usu. just read yr emails and/or visit ravelry — I’m really liking the new layout and color scheme. it’s very fresh and less cluttered looking. and, needless to say, the giant Lucy-face is a definite PLUS.
thanks for all the giveaways. and happy momma’s day – feline children count, too.

  20. Brandy says:

Good Dreary Morning from Nova Scotia. I admit I am a groupie. I enjoy the challenge of knitting upside down – the sock, not me. And I wait with bated breath for your book on lace – advance ordered from Amazon. I have the yarn all lined up ready to be lace – it told me so. 🙂

  26. I love the circular shawl, I must get on with my knitting!

  27. Pixiewear says:

ack! facebook is a pain, isn’t it? Thanks for the awesome giveaway!

  33. Your shawl sounds and looks lovely. You’re certainly generous to give away so much.
    Good luck to all.

  34. Thanks for the heads up on the Knitcircus live date (and for the giveaway, of course 🙂 )

  35. Just thinking of that many stitches in one round makes my head hurt. But the end result is bound to be great with the lovely color and the spiral construction.
Thanks for a great giveaway opportunity.

  36. I love KnitCircus! Pick me!

  37. 2muchfun/Pam says:

I decided to take on a project that I have been thinking is huge. I’m knitting a dress for myself. However, it ‘only’ has 354 stitches around and seems to take forever to accomplish 1 row. I can’t even fathom having 700+ sts in 1 row.

  38. Denise says:

I hope I get picked – love your new shawl!

  39. Verena B says:

Love the color of your shawl! And thank you for the great giveaway!

  40. KateMC says:

I love seeing the progress of your shawls. Count me in for the drawing as well.

  41. Thanks for another great giveaway!

  42. Connie G. says:

Sorry to hear about your experience on Facebook. I am not a fan of the site, but hate to hear when others have a bad experience with it.
On the bright side, I love how your newest shawl looks so far and can’t wait to see it when it’s done. And I love, love, love KnitCircus and would so enjoy both a subscription as well as the collection.

  43. I am so hoping to see issue of knitcircus. I do love you blogs. Interested to see how this circular shawl turns out. You are a woman after my own heart, I being so into lace, socks, shawls.

  46. Thank you for the chance to win a subscription to Knitcircus. I love the color of your newest shawl.

  47. Lynn Chodur says:

I would love a subscription, or the patterns. When do you think you’ll get out of the shawl phase!!

  48. Catherine P says:

    What a lovely color!

  49. (Another) Joan says:

You have to be in it to win it, so pls include me in!

  50. Glad you support knitcircus, it’s a great publication.

  51. margaret says:

sorry to hear your Facebook problems – I’m on Facebook but only as a way for people from my past to find me – too many people don’t understand that in using any of the Facebook games or apps you are giving permission to access pretty much everything

  52. knitkit says:

MAY GIVEAWAY IS A WINNER – KnitCircus yeah!

  53. I seem to have finally come to the same conclusion, that I knit faster than I purl. I’m not sure if I’m slow to realize, or my knitting just picked up speed. What a great giveaway – thanks for letting us enter!
And facebook spam? Yeah that drives me nuts too. I’ll miss Lucy, but I do understand the need to keep her safe on-line!

  55. I love Lucy’s closeup shot! And your shawl, well that goes without saying. Thanks for this nifty giveaway! Happy Wednesday!

  56. I am so tempted to knit a pi shawl to use as a table cloth, but then we know that I have problems following directions on a simple triangular shawl, when I put the middle markers not in the middle… I already get Knit Circus and love it. I am on Facebook to keep up with my kids and grandkids who are spread all over the USA. Don’t friend very many others.

  57. I love to browse thru magazines about knitting….a great give-a-way!

  58. The shawl is looking very beautiful. I also knit faster than I purl. Thanks for all the giveaways that you do!

  61. Your shawls are amazing. Hope I win something!

  64. kitrin says:

I am looking forward to the newest knitcircus.

  65. Sorry you had trouble with Facebook—that’s why I’m not there either. It makes me a bit angry that so many people are using it as an *only* means of communication, but I still refuse to participate. Thanks for your blogs and thanks for being so responsive when I have had pattern questions (love! your patterns!!).

  66. Michelle Bingnear says:

Hooray for another wonderful give-away! Hope it’s me this time around! And I’m working on a crochet rag rug for my daughter made from strips of her old t-shirts – increase 6 every round til I run out of fabric. Hope I don’t get to the 700’s in stitches!

  67. Roseanne Nichols says:

Thanks for the chance at the give away!

  68. Wonderful!! I love this magazine! Thank you!

  69. Knit Circus is one that I don’t have a subscription to already. Thanks for the giveaway!

  70. I agree about knitting in the round, soooo much faster! That’s going to be a lovely shawl in a beautiful color.

  71. Alice Moisen says:

    I’d love to win.

  72. Crystal says:

That’s too bad about your Facebook account 🙁 But completely understandable to get rid of it 🙂 If I had something like that happen and I didn’t use it at all, I would get rid of it as well.

The speed at which you complete projects just amazes me. Maybe one day I can knit fast like you 🙂

  73. Can’t wait to see the finished shawl. Please enter me in the giveaway.

  74. I love Knit Circus! Poor Lucy, don’t take it personally.

  76. Wendy Bloom says:

I do believe it’s MY turn to win a Knit Circus subscription! Love ya Wendy!

  77. Beautiful shawls! I would love to win.

  78. Peggy Kraham says:

sorry to hear about your facebook problems. thanks for the chance to win a magazine or a pattern.

  79. That is definitely a good reason to stop being on Facebook. One of my friends is an actress, so it is important for her to keep her face out there. Facebook is one of the tools she uses.

  80. Dream in Color yarn is the latest yarn I’ve fallen in love with! There’s just so much yummy yarn out there! And thanks for running another giveaway!

  81. Judy Orndorf says:

I am really getting interested in the circular shawl,
and now looking forward to Knit Circus !

  82. I completely agree with you about Facebook; the spam attacks are getting a little ridiculous. Alas, it is the only way I have to keep in touch with certain friends from around the world, so I’m just really careful with it.

Here’s hoping to win the giveaway!!

  83. The shawl is lovely. Please enter me in the giveaway. Hope I am the winner.

  84. Jo Anne WM says:

    I’d enjoy a Knitcircus prize.

  85. madonnaearth says:

Awesome; I would love to win a subscription!

  86. Sally M says:

Oh, very nice shawl!! Can’t wait to get *that* pattern 🙂

Also, I’d love to get in on your give-aways….you are so nice!

  87. Love to get the subscription. Thanks for the opportunity!

  88. MizMelly says:

Ahhhh. Another exciting give away! Love it!
And I totally relate on the Facebook experience. It happened to two of my friends, which convinced me that I did not need to be putting myself out on those social networks (call me old fashioned….). So why is it that every retail and online business is urging people to “friend” them on Facebook for wonderful sales and discounts??!!! (not to mention every newspaper and radio station in the country).

  89. Kathy N says:

I looked at the Knit circus summer edition and love it. Thanks for offering it.

  90. Facebook makes me dizzier than knitting round and round. Can’t wait to see your latest creation! Thanks for the chance to win KnitCircus. You are swell to share it with all of us!

  91. Jennifer says:

    I love Knitcircus.

  92. I would love to have a subscription to KnitCircus! I am especially proud as another Madison knitter that the publication is from my own city.

  93. Kathy S says:

Those are some darling baby patterns in the new KnitCircus. I especially like the hooded gansey!

  94. Anne Anderson says:

Thanks for another great giveaway. I love Knitcircus and your shawls.

  95. Would love to be in the giveaway. I understand what you mean about Facebook. If I didn’t have so many personal friends that lived out of state, I probably wouldn’t get on there either. 🙂

  96. Facebook spam bad…Knitting Circus? Fabulous! Count me in!

  97. Leslie F says:

Thank you Wendy for the wonderful chances to win, and thank you Knitcircus for this prize!

Dream in Color Surf makes me think of lazy days at the beach! Look forward to seeing the finished project.

At least you don’t have a Sony Playstation…

  98. I’m a little scared of circular shawls. I have a hard enough time completing a triangular shawl that keeps getting bigger. I don’t know about a giant circle. Although no purl rows sounds lovely

  99. I would love the subscription; magazines are all I have to read with two busy teen-aged boys in the house! Lovely shawl…

  100. I so do enjoy reading your blog. The magazine looks fantastic. I would love to win it.
    Thanks Wendy!
