Forever In Vogue

I have here a review copy of the soon-to-be-released Vogue Knitting: Classic Patterns From the world’s Most Celebrated Knitting Magazine.

Cover110111 182x240 Forever In Vogue

This is a “best of” collection that celebrates the 30 year history of the “new” Vogue Knitting magazine, which was launched in 1982. The book contains at my count 76 patterns from the past 30 years.

Vogue Knitting was originally started in the 1930s, and ceased publication in 1969. It started up again in 1982, and I have subscribed from the very first issue.

This book gives you a brief history of VK from its very beginnings to the present, with lots of great photos of those early covers. There’s lots of fascinating information about the designers, editors, and photographers who have worked with VK over the years.

And of course the patterns. Many of them I remember well, and a number of them I have knit.

The patterns are all from the 1980s through the present. Looking through the book was definitely a trip down memory lane. I made this design from the Spring/Summer 1983 issue:

80s110111 141x240 Forever In Vogue

Here’s a lovely pattern from the 1990s I made, from the Spring/Summer 1996 issue:

90s110111 182x240 Forever In Vogue

I’ve not made this Shirley Paden design from the Winter 2000/2001 issue, but isn’t it gorgeous?

20s110111 172x240 Forever In Vogue

As I said, I counted 76 patterns total, all with complete instructions. While this would make a lovely coffee table book, it is much more than that.

The publisher, Rizzoli International Publications, Inc. generously offered to send a copy of this gorgeous book to one of my readers. (I’m keeping my copy!)

To be entered in the drawing to win a copy of Vogue Knitting: Classic Patterns From the world’s Most Celebrated Knitting Magazine, leave a comment on this blog post by noon Eastern Time on Tuesday, November 8, 2011. At that time I’ll draw a name at random to win the book.

Progress

I ma knitting along on Filey and still enjoying the process. The pattern is written specifically for denim yarn that shrinks in length, so all pieces of the sweater are knitted longer to accommodate for this shrinkage.

I’ve finished the second giant sock of the pair I was knitting and am about to cast on a new pair of giant socks.

And I blocked my Thin Ice!

This Week

I have some special guests arriving on Thursday . . . The Knitgirllls! They are coming to visit and accompany me on my annual knitting retreat with friends to the wilds of Virginia. But before we head out for that, we will be at fibre space in Alexandria Virginia on Thursday, November 3, from around 4:00pm to 7:00pm. If you are in the area, stop by to sit and knit with us!

  72. Melissa says:

Wendy, I hope I win this book because I want to be like you some day – looking through a “best of” and seeing countless patterns that I knit “way back when” when they originally came out. Knowing that there are so many of us out there gives me serious warm (and very excited) fuzzies. With all the fiber running through my veins, I really don’t need caffeine! Your extremely beautiful finished Thin Ice has convinced me that I now need to knit one of my own. You know how you could be on the fence about a certain design, and then looking through all the finished projects on Ravelry you discover one that totally tips you over into the “must knit one NOW!!!” category? Well, I think yours has done that for me. Congratulations. ;)

On a side note – you know how excitement raises your body temperature? Well, that doesn’t really work so well with me being a lover of knitting and all. I always have my treasures close at hand, but don’t really get to wear them all that much because it seems as soon as I put them on, I see something on Rav or get a crazy cool idea and have to take them all off again! It’s a good thing knits are so aesthetically pleasing, or I’d be in trouble… Enough rambling. Now I need to go look at a certain yarn I picked up last weekend at SAFF (which you really should check out some year, by the way). I think it might work really well as a Thin Ice.

  73. Wanda says:
