Forever In Vogue

I have here a review copy of the soon-to-be-released Vogue Knitting: Classic Patterns From the world’s Most Celebrated Knitting Magazine.

Cover110111 182x240 Forever In Vogue

This is a “best of” collection that celebrates the 30 year history of the “new” Vogue Knitting magazine, which was launched in 1982. The book contains at my count 76 patterns from the past 30 years.

Vogue Knitting was originally started in the 1930s, and ceased publication in 1969. It started up again in 1982, and I have subscribed from the very first issue.

This book gives you a brief history of VK from its very beginnings to the present, with lots of great photos of those early covers. There’s lots of fascinating information about the designers, editors, and photographers who have worked with VK over the years.

And of course the patterns. Many of them I remember well, and a number of them I have knit.

The patterns are all from the 1980s through the present. Looking through the book was definitely a trip down memory lane. I made this design from the Spring/Summer 1983 issue:

80s110111 141x240 Forever In Vogue

Here’s a lovely pattern from the 1990s I made, from the Spring/Summer 1996 issue:

90s110111 182x240 Forever In Vogue

I’ve not made this Shirley Paden design from the Winter 2000/2001 issue, but isn’t it gorgeous?

20s110111 172x240 Forever In Vogue

As I said, I counted 76 patterns total, all with complete instructions. While this would make a lovely coffee table book, it is much more than that.

The publisher, Rizzoli International Publications, Inc. generously offered to send a copy of this gorgeous book to one of my readers. (I’m keeping my copy!)

To be entered in the drawing to win a copy of Vogue Knitting: Classic Patterns From the world’s Most Celebrated Knitting Magazine, leave a comment on this blog post by noon Eastern Time on Tuesday, November 8, 2011. At that time I’ll draw a name at random to win the book.

Progress

I ma knitting along on Filey and still enjoying the process. The pattern is written specifically for denim yarn that shrinks in length, so all pieces of the sweater are knitted longer to accommodate for this shrinkage.

I’ve finished the second giant sock of the pair I was knitting and am about to cast on a new pair of giant socks.

And I blocked my Thin Ice!

This Week

I have some special guests arriving on Thursday . . . The Knitgirllls! They are coming to visit and accompany me on my annual knitting retreat with friends to the wilds of Virginia. But before we head out for that, we will be at fibre space in Alexandria Virginia on Thursday, November 3, from around 4:00pm to 7:00pm. If you are in the area, stop by to sit and knit with us!

Lucy is so lucky she’s fashion-proof, and never has to worry about any photos from the 80’s showing up to haunt her. Man, was the hair big back then…….

  67. This book looks amazing!! I only wish I’d been knitting since the 80’s!! Alas, I’ve only been knittin 10 years!!! : (

  68. Ohhh that looks very interesting 🙂 Hello Lucy !

  69. Wendy I am interested in following your comments about the Rowan denim cotton.
I’ve picked up the skeins in the LYS and put them down again, not really sure how I feel about having to knit more to get the right length/width because of predetermined shrinkage.
    Is it all worth it?
From what I’ve read the cotton is meant to age as a pair of jeans does over time. But how often do you wash a cotton top as opposed to jeans? I guess I’m wondering how long does it take to soften up and then not change in size.
    I’m reading with interest!
    Oh, Hi Lucy

  70. Sounds like you will be having a lovely time with the knitgirllls. I feel a bit green because I love events like that but alas I live in beautiful Maine. Enjoy!

  73. Janice Boulukos says:

Looks like an awesome book, would love to add to my collection. Many beautiful patterns for inspiration.

  74. Recently I was in my aunts house and she pulled out her collection of knitting patterns from the 80’s when it was her job to knit them. Needless to say some of them were more than you could imagine a person wearing now… but I loved them!

Getting a chance to flick through and maybe take a couple would have been good enough for me but in fact she has bestowed upon me all of them. Now I must take a better look through to find some inspiration… because I am lacking it! But I fear that I wont find it there… maybe I would find it here in this book! I if get it… *nudge nudge*!

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  75. Looks like a great book! I have always enjoyed Vogue! Thanks for the giveaway.

  76. those vintage patterns bring fond knitting memories!

  78. GREED in my heart for this book as I to remember many of these patterns and suffer a bit of regret that I handed off the magazines but know they have been well loved by others.
Your shawl is beautiful and inspire me to block the KAL shawl from this summer. One of the most fun projects I have ever knit and will do again.

  79. The Vogue book looks amazing. Thanks for the chance to win it.

  80. Looks like a great book! Pick me 🙂
