My current work in progress:

Rona, by Alice Starmore, knit from Alice Starmore Hebridean 2-Ply, using 3.25mm needles.

Zig-Zag Gansey

I finished my Zig-Zag Gansey. Here it is, being modeled by the ever-lovely Gwendolyn.

I knit this with Lion Brand Cotton-Ease in the “Blossom” colorway using a U.S. size 6 needle to get 4.25 stitches to the inch. (I’m a loose knitter.)

It was knit in pieces, then joined at the shoulders using a three-needle bind-off. I picked up and knit a neckband after that.

The sleeves are three-quarter length and knit from the bottom up, then attached to the body (drop-shoulder construction) using a three-needle bind-off.

Then the only seaming left to be done was the side and sleeve seams.

The Cotton-Ease was quite pleasant to knit. The acrylic content in it gave it a bit of stretch so my stitches were nice and even, and it was quite pleasant to knit and easy on the hands. I just lightly steamed the pieces before putting the sweater together — no severe blocking needed.

I haven’t yet decided whether I will write up the pattern and make it available. The large pattern repeat makes it difficult to resize — I’d only be able to offer it in a couple of sizes. Adding/removing one pattern repeat from the front and back results in an 8.5″ difference in size. But I’ll fiddle with it and see what I think.

Book Giveaway!

I just received a review copy of this:

This is the Vogue Knitting Stitchionary Volume One: Knit & Purl. It was released in hardcover a few years ago and is now due to be released in paperback early next people. The nice folks at Sixth & Spring Books sent me a review copy of this new paperback edition.

This stitch dictionary contains over 300 stitch patterns, all beautifully photographed and presented.

It’s a great resource and I frequently use my hardcover copy when I’m looking for a stitch pattern.

I don’t need both the hardcover and paperback versions, so I’m offering this one up to one of my readers.

To be entered in the random drawing for this great stitch dictionary, please leave a comment on this post (you know the drill: emails sent to me via the “contact me” form or comments on other entries aren’t included in the drawing) by noon Eastern Time this Thursday, February 23, 2012. At that time I’ll use my WordPress plug-in to select the winner from the comments to this post.

Lucy clearly needs to work on relaxing.

  1. Your sweater is lovely! i love Ganseys. And having another stitch dictionary would be wonderful – thanks for offering it up in this drawing!

  2. Jeannette in St. Louis says:

Thanks for the opportunity to win this book! It looks very interesting. That Lucy,,,she’s such a hard worker!

  3. Your sweater is lovely and I’m glad to have your take on the yarn – I’m considering it for a project. I’d sure like to have that book – my library is missing a stitch dictionary.

  4. I’ve loved wool-ease for simple projects for quite some time, but have still been surprised to see how smoothly you’ve been able to work a sweater from the cotton version. ‘Thick’ cotton yarns are so tied to dishcloth cotton in my head, and it’s hard to imaging a sweater that drapes as nicely as yours with that background distorting my imagination!

  5. I’d love that stitch dictionary.

  6. Love the sweater! and the book looks great! I’m looking forward to seeing you at Soxperience in April!

  7. Your Gansey turned out beautiful! I really like Cotton Ease, it’s always nice to work with. I’ve made several bibs with it for baby gifts. I would love to be entered in the drawning. I want to expand my knowledge of knitting! Thanks for sharing.

  8. Your sweater looks fabulous! I have to admit, I’m a big fan of Cotton Ease…

  9. I love stitchionaries and the Vogue books are always so well done. Would love to win this one!

Lucy is verging on a cuteness citation.

Would also love the book. Keep meaning to get myself a copy.

  12. I remember seeing that book at the stores before but never got around to buying it. I would love to win the paperback version.

  13. I’ve somehow failed to add the Vogue stitch dictionaries to my book collection, so it would be a lovely addition should Mr. Random Picker select me. 🙂

  14. Ruth Porter says:

Kudos to you and the sweater. I would love this stitch dictionary to add to my library. Hugs to napping Lucy.

  15. Add me to the list, please!

  16. The sweater is wonderful. Love the color and would also love the book.

  17. As usual, I’m here trying for the book! Lucy continues to be the prettiest little girl.

  18. The Gansey came out beautifully – thank you for sharing! I don’t think you can have too many stitch dictionaries, so I’d love to have this for my library!

  19. Aunt Colleen says:

I would love to own a stitch dictionary.

  20. Thanks for offering up the book!!

  21. Lovely work as always; I’m in for the drawing too.

  22. Lovely sweater. I love to win the lovely book too.

I particularly like the neckband and 3/4 sleeves. You are inspiring me to be less of a pattern slave.

  23. Heaven sakes — one of the things my knitting library is lacking is a good book so various stitches. I’d give it a good home 🙂

  27. Oh, I love this series, but don’t have this volume. Please pick me, pretty please!

  28. so you leave live stitches for the sleeves to be joined up with…and live stitches at the shoulders?
do you have a basic pattern\formula that you use so you know how many stitches or inches to leave?
and wait…that can’t be right…how do you join the sleeves with a three needle bind off?
yikes wendy…i just can’t picture it!

  29. Cats have such a hard life…
I’d like to win the book.

  36. Love your work and Lucy reminds me of the way my cat looked and acted!! Thanks for all you do and offering us a chance to enhance our library!

  37. a pattern for the ZigZag would be loverly. Do you vary the neckband depending on the pattern or do you have a standard design. Hard to see if it is just knit or garter stitch. love the stitch book!

  38. The sweater is really pretty…..I’m glad that you used Cotton Ease. I have wondered if it would make up into a great sweater as cotton tends to be a bit heavy. I hope that you do put the pattern up. I would like to make a gansey and this looks like it would be a good first one. Thank you for the chance to win the stitch dictionary.

  39. can’t wait to see you in your sweater!! i would love to add the Stitchionary to my library!!

  50. Oh please random name picker choose me for this book.

  51. I have cables and lace in hard back, so this would be a perfect addition to my library.

  52. Clearly you need to talk to your vet regarding Lucy’s hyperactivity problem. All that relaxing must be exhausting!

Love the color and the pattern on the gansey. 8.5″ per repeat sounds about right for my tent-like proportions…

Now if only some publisher would a) reissue the Barbara Walker treasuries, b) send you at least two copies of each volume, and c) the comments random generator would pick me, I’d be in high cotton! In the meantime, I’d love to have the Vogue.

  53. I love your sweater!
