Mystic Shawls

Last week I got a review copy of Mystic Shawls, a pattern collection by Anna Dalvi. right now it is available as an eBook only — hard copies will be shipping later this month.

Anna Dalvi is a prolific designer — if you look on Ravelry, you will find that she has 103 pattern posted there. This book is a collection of 14 lace shawls that were all originally part of knit-alongs (KALs). I pause to contemplate this: Anna Dalvo has hosted 14 shawl KALs.

These 14 shawls are Anna’s “Mystic” Collection — all have Mystic in their name. And they are all drool-worthy. I say this as someone who is extremely picky about lace patterns: one little thing that seems “off” to me can ruin a whole pattern and I won’t consider it. so this is amazing: a book with 14 patterns and not a dog in the bunch. (Apologies to all the dogs out there. I am a cat person.)

The shawls are in several shapes: triangle, rectangle, square, circle, semi-circle, and crescent, so there is something for everyone. Most of the patterns are knit from laceweight yarns, with a few written for fingering weight and one for sport weight. The lace motifs are all charted (I can’t even begin to imagine the proofreading nightmare that would ensue if they were written out line by line) and the charts are large and clear. The designs are beautifully photographed by Caro Sheridan and there are multiple views of each design so you can really see what each one looks like.

You can see all the patterns on Ravelry, here.

I’ve had a hard time picking my favorites. Mystic Embers jumped out at me immediately:

I love how the diamond-shaped motif is placed into the rectangular shawl — so different!

I also love Mystic Roses:

Such a lovely large shawl!

And Mystic Delight is . . . well . . . a delight!

I love the mixture of color and lace here.

Go see all the designs on Ravelry! Which are your favorites?

You can purchase the eBook via Ravelry from the above link. You can also purchase a copy from the publisher, Cooperative Press.

You can also enter my contest to try to win a copy of the eBook. 🙂

To enter the contest, please leave a comment on this post telling which of the 14 shawls from Mystic Shawls is your favorite. To be eligible for the draw, leave your comment by 11:00 am Eastern time on Sunday, June 22, 2014. At that time the Random Number Generator will choose a winner.

  1. Mystic Delight. I have never knit a shawl. Strange I know.

  2. DeborahSW says:

All so lovely, but I really like Mystic Air the best!

  3. Robin D says:

Mystic Star is my favorite but I did have a hard time choosing just one.
Thank you for the chance to win

  4. Virginia says:

I love both mystic air and mystic fire. Mystic fire reminds me of henna patterns I used to do on my hands.

  5. Mystic Delight is my favorite….can see it in handspun natural colors! Was a hard decision.

  6. If I HAD to choose just one I would have to say Mystic Meadows. But they are all amazing!

  7. I am torn between Mystic Meadows and Mystic waters. Both are beautiful. It is so nice of you to give away these books.

  8. Mystic Delight

  9. Mystic Star.. I love lace! It even holds up under a little color striping which is beautiful.

  10. All so pretty! But I think Mystic Air is my fave!

  11. This is a beautiful collections.

    Thank you for sharing!
So far my fave for today is Mystic Roses

  12. Mystic Desire is the first choice to make up! Then the rest would be on the list, I think it would be by whose birthday comes first for which would be knit next!

  13. Mystic Desire and Mystic Earth tied. Would love to knit them all!

  14. Sandra Kerr says:

I love the mystic star. It’s absolutely lovely.

  15. Tough tough choice but I’d have to say “Mystic Delight.” It’s been in my queue for ages.
    Lmecoll on Ravelry

  16. Wow. Such a hard choice. It took me a while. Normally one jumps right out at me, but there were 3 or 4 that made it hard to choose.

Mystic Star edged out the competition.

  17. OMG!!!! They are ALL gorgeous! I’d have to single out “Mystic Blue”, though–stunning!

  18. Mystic Desire. Or maybe Mystic Rose. Or Mystic Water. Whichever one I can add beads to easily. I’m in a beaded shawl windstorm and I can’t get out. is there a Mystic Sirroco?

  19. Mystic Midsummer Wreath

Thanks for introducing this book & designer to me – lots more on my wish list now!

  20. They are all my favorites, but if I had to pick just one, it would be Mystical Light, followed by Mystical Star.

  21. What a gorgeous book! I think Mystic Star is my favorite.

  22. I like Mystic Embers best.

  23. Michele says:

Mystic Fire is my favorite. I love them all.

  24. Oh wow, these are some super gorgeous shawl patterns. Some day I hope to be up to the challenge of mystic star, but for now, mystic delight seems the right combination of beauty and my skill level!

  25. Andrea F. says:

I love Mystic Meadows. But maybe it was the color that caught my eye. They are all beautiful!

  26. Daphne Johnston says:

Mystic Star is lovely, and doable by me. They are all beautiful pieces of art.

  27. They are all gorgeous, but Mystic Diamonds is my favorite. I actually prefer stoles over most other shawl shapes, and I love how the diamonds are worked into this one.

  28. That cover shawl really knocks my socks off, so Mystic Star would have to be it, although Mystic Ember would be fighting to be first as well.

  29. Venice Smith says:

As beautiful as they all are, I suppose I would have to choose Mystic Meadows with Mystic Desire running a close second. Beautiful shawls.

  30. They’re all lovely, but Mystic Fire is my favorite. Thanks for bringing these to my attention!

  31. Mystic midsummer wreath is my favorite!

  32. The shawl are all beautiful! But I think I like Mystic Embers the best.

  36. BarbaraS. says:

There are so many very, very pretty one that it is hard to pick. I think I Mystic Earth might be my favorite – today. ask me tomorrow and . . .

  38. mystic water has always been my favorite but i’ve always been too intimidated to knit it.

  39. I think Mystic Waters is my favorite. But all of the shawls are beautiful.

  40. KatherineR says:

  43. i’ll join you with mystic embers, altho they are all so wonderful

  44. Amy Segel says:

Mystic Embers jumped out at me as well. Mystic Meadows is a very close second though!

  45. I have her Shaping Shawls book, which has some pretty amazing shawls and techniques. Since I have knit a lot of triangular, faroese and square shawls, I think my favorite in this book is the rectangular Mystic Diamonds. I don’t normally like rectangular shawls, but this one has such a beautiful lace pattern that I was immediately sucked in by it.

  46. I LOOOVE the color of Mystic Fire, but what I can see of Mystic Meadows is really compelling. The linear quality first reminded me of a Frank Lloyd Wright stained glass window or chair back. Then the almost floral top of the motif brought Mackintosh to mind.

  47. Carolyn says:

So hard to pick one! But I do love the contrasting colors in Mystic Delight.

  48. I’d love a copy of this book!

And, I wish you a speedy recovery.

  49. I am totally torn between Waters and Delight. That delight uses multiple colors is so very cool — so old fashioned, yet not “old” old fashioned.

  50. JudyAnn says:

  51. Lora Welt says:

Mystic Waters. I live in Mystic ,CT near the Mystic River and it seems a familiar sort of shawl design.

  52. I like the geometric patterns in Mystic Waters – a pattern I’ve had for a while. I’m excited to have them all in a book!

  53. Mystic Earth is my fav – gorgeous !

  54. Such a beautiful collection! I kept going back to Mystic Earth. Love it!

  55. Such a beautiful collection! I keep going back to Mystic Earth. That’s the one for me!

  56. Such a beautiful collection. Mystic Earth for me!

  57. Pam Huang says:

They are all lovely but I am particularly drawn to Mystic Delight-love the two tone colors.!

  58. Mystic Star would be the one I would knit first.

  59. Have to say Mystic Fire gets my vote, but they are all gorgeous!

  60. I love Mystic Light and would knit it in a dark green or the BMFA thraven colourway that has the most favourites on Ravelry. It is very eye catching.

  61. You’re right, no dogs! Think I like Mystic Star most of all.

  62. I have a soft spot for lace shawls. The more complicated the better. 🙂
Jessica´s last blog post ..FO: Hitchhike the Stars

  64. Mystic Desire and Mystic Ice immediately caught my eye, but Mystic Fire is right up there as well. Which would I knit first????

  73. Cathy Chesnut says:

Mystic waters speaks to me but I would knit any other in this book. Plan to buy it if not the winner.

  74. Constance says:

A hard choice–but I love the huge triangles, and especially Mystic Air, with Mystic Fire close behind.

  75. Melanie says:

I love the Mystic Star shawl, always inspired by circular shawls. Loki is looking very fluffy.

  76. I love Mystic Earth! The variety in shape and construction of the shawls would keep me entertained for a long time 🙂

  77. Mystic Delight is a delight along with several others.

Can’t wait to start knitting these.

  78. They are all beautiful, but I am partial to Mystic Light

  79. Mystic Earth would be the first I’d love to knit!

  82. I really loved her book of Egyptian shawls, but I think this one might be even better!

Impossible to choose a favorite but the first one I’d absolutely have to cast on is Mystic Fire. Then Mystic Waters for a larger shawl.

  83. Christina says:

IIt’s a hard choice, they are all so beautiful. Mystic Star is the one I like best.

  84. Alice Moisen says:

Mystic Fire looks like a lot of fun. It was a hard choice

  85. The Mystic Star!

  86. Wow these are great … thank you for showing this!
I am not sure…Mystic Air looks tempting, and of course the one on the cover, Mystic Star. But I think my favourite is Mystic Embers.

  87. Mystic Embers is my first choice. After 28 years of teaching children pre-school through 12th grade, I am ready for a different challenge.
    Thank you for this opportunity.

  88. Margaret G says:

Mystic Roses is my favorite. That’s the one I’ll start first.

  89. thegeorg says:

I shall knit Mystic Star. I love the circular shawl knitting.

  90. Betty Francis says:

I was drawn to Mystic Water. I like the square with the corners squared off. And a clever, unusual center motif. Looks a bit challenging, but that’s what i like. She must have a bevy of elves to get all her designs knit.
