One Lacy Rib Sock

by Wendy on July 16, 2007

I haven’t got much for you today. But here is one Lacy Rib sock, hot off the needles.

I really really like this alpaca sock yarn. Several of you had questions about it.

I don’t think it will felt in the wash, because it’s 20% nylon. Last year I knitted a pair of socks from an alpaca/nylon blend that I’ve machine washed and dried several times, and they survived those ordeals beautifully.

Despite being mostly alpaca, this yarn seems to have a nice elasticity. Well, it is 20% merino wool, so that gives it some springiness.

Also, the pattern I noodled up for it is a particularly stretchy lace rib, so that adds a lot of bounce.

I think this patterns look particularly well in a variegated yarn, too.

Thanks for all the lovely comments on my Asparagus Ribs Socks. This pattern will be available for sale in the near future. I plan on offering up all my Summer of Socks socks eventually.

Okay, that’s it for today — I am beyond tired. I think I’ll try to go nap with Lucy.

I am eagerly awaiting the pattern, I have already ordered the yarn for the Asparagus socks. A nap sounds great, perhaps I will join the bandwagon.

It is a smashing sock! Thanks for your comments on the yarn as well.

Now, take very good care of yourself. Are you eating enough chocolate???? :)

Has the little movie star kept you busy answering her fan mail, fielding off the paparazzi and generally tending to her every whim? We can’t let Lucy become Paris so you go get a nap and take care of yourself, Wendy. The little movie star will just have to cool those incredibly cute jets while you get your strength back.

Wendy- I love variegated yarn to the point that I find solid colors somewhat boring now.

I’m sure Lucy concurs, being variegated herself, so to speak.

6 Wannietta 07.16.07 at 6:07 pm

It’s really pretty Wendy; I like how the colours change!

Ooooh nothing better than a nap with our favourite felines!

These alspaca socks look lovely…I tell you…I am almost tempted to try some socks after seeing your finishes!

Wendy-Thanks for all the nice comments about Alpaca Sox. The yardage is 450 yds-perfect for shawls. We are not recommending machine washing it, but you can experiment and let us know. All the variegated colors are up on line at

to continue…

All the colors are on line at
which of course won’t link. But go to the Classic Elite site and then products and there you are.

Feel better!

Beautiful socks, I really think you are truly an artist. All of your socks are wonderful. I would be hard pressed to choose a favorite. Have a great nap with lucy.

Love the alpaca socks and the asparagus ones as well. I’ll line up for those two patterns for sure.

12 Tonia 07.16.07 at 8:06 pm

Love the new sock. They will be nice and warm for sure.

Looks like Lucy has already beat you to the nap. Hope you have a nice one with her.

I can’t nap. I don’t have a cat to nap with. It follows that I needs me a cat. Is it true that ragdolls don’t cause the allergic reaction that other cats do?

Beautiful socks. I’m working on a practice/learning sock, the third one, but still have terrible holes at the gusset. I’ll beat it yet.

I love the new Lacy Rib socks, I hope that’s one of the ones you’ll make available after SOS is over. Lucy looks happy in her spot

15 Chris 07.16.07 at 8:59 pm

Lucy - You must work your nap magic more often on your mom, because she sounds beat!

I am of the (very strong) mindset that children have the right idea, and a nap in the afternoon can cure most any bad day.

And booze helps too…

The alpaca socks look wonderful. I did knit alpaca socks last year, and they have been wonderful. They are so soft, and warm.
The asparagus socks are so beautiful. Thank you for designing such a nice pattern for the yarn.

Oh Lucy- my Magpie thinks you’re so lucky- Momma’s going to take a nap with you!

She loves taking naps with me!

Hope the nap helped with the tiredness- and it’s only Monday- bleah.

Lacy rib socks are my favourite kind - feminine and comfortable but not really girly.

Also, alpaca won’t felt no matter how hard you try.

20 Theresa in Italy 07.17.07 at 3:13 am

Hope you enjoyed your nap. I also needed one (without feline company, sadly). Really nice looking sock! For the moment I’m happy just to look at it—it’s been so hot here I’d rather not touch anything as warm as alpaca!

21 elise 07.17.07 at 3:18 am

The sock looks great. I think Alpaca would be nice on the toes.
Out of curiosity, how long do you normally make the leg of your socks? Do you have a personal rule of thumb for determining this?

You’re expecting MRI results Tuesday; that right? I hope they are informative. It may be a relief to you and yours to know why you’ve been hurting, and what might help. I pray it will. (If you don’t mind. . . .)

The Lacy Rib stitch pattern looks like a fun one.

I hope you have been feeling better. Our health is precious.

24 Meg 07.17.07 at 9:38 am

The alpaca sock is beautiful - the lacy rib is very nice. I really enjoyed seeing Lucy’s movie yesterday - the camera definitely loves her!

25 Gillian 07.17.07 at 10:29 am

Wendy, I watch for your posts and always like to read them. No I have a question. Someone, whose blog I read, linked to another blog with garterstitch sideways mitts. I’ve searched as much as I know how, without success. Do you know of any that you could direct me too? Thanks.

26 Stephanie 07.17.07 at 10:42 am

I LOVE the alpaca sock, both the pattern and the colorway!!!! I don’t suppose you want to send them to me when you are done. LOL

27 Judy 07.17.07 at 10:47 am

Alpaca is one of my favorite fibres and that yarn looks yummy.
Summer of Socks would make a nice book or booklet. So far, I’d like
to knit everyone of ‘em. Note to Lucy: teach Mommy how to nap properly. This is one area where cats are far superior to humans.

For napping, there is not better mentor than a cat. Is Lucy still in training for the Olympics?

29 MamaLana 07.17.07 at 7:13 pm

I keep reading Lacy socks as Lucy socks. I think I need a nap, too!

I agree withanother commenter, Wendy. You should write a book with all your sock patterns and tips in one place. I actually bought your book based on the toe-up sock instructions, but have not been brave enought to try it yet.
