Oh Yeah. It’s the Summer of Socks

by Wendy on June 23, 2008

I totally forgot to make mention of that yesterday.

My current sock-in-progress is my kick-off project for the Summer of Socks ‘08. I decided to start with some sportweight socks to give myself a little “atta-girl” — sportweight socks knit up really fast. :-) How fast? I finished the first sock last night.

The yarn (Yarntini sportweight) is wonderful to knit — very soft and yummy. And the skein is a generous 260 yards, which makes a very decent-sized pair of socks.

The pattern is my own — I doodled it up on graph paper last month and stuck it in my “pending” folder for future reference. It is currently called “May12a.”

Anyone have any ideas for a prettier name? Remember, I don’t give my patterns color-specific names (or at least I try not to).

So . . . Summer of Socks. Will I knit only socks this summer? Right now I’m not sure. I might feel the urge to make something lacy or to knit a cotton sweater. So I make no promises!

I do have a lot of cotton in my stash and I’m thinking that as much as I really don’t enjoy knitting with cotton, I’d quite like to have another cotton sweater, seeing as how I’m always too warm to wear wool. So you just never know . . .

Meanwhile, Lucy waits patiently for me to get off the computer and come play with her.

The triangles remind me of a backgammon board.. so that’s my vote: Backgammon!

I kinda like the sounds of “Ziggy Marley” or something like that.

I really like the colour (and design) of these socks, but my question/comment is more about Lucy. You always put a picture of her at the end of the post (a habit that I love by the way) and I was wondering if you have a stock pile of Lucy pictures or if you take the picture either when you are writing the post/during the same day as you make the post.

Looking at the pic that shows more of the top of the foot it reminds me of a windmill - Tilting at Windmills?

5 Megan S. 06.23.08 at 5:54 pm

Ok, so today I have decided that you deserve a coherent post that all of your adoring public will understand!

The socks remind me of moccasins… I think it’s got something to do with where the outer lace pattern falls on the foot - kind of like the stitching you would find on a pair of mocs!

Coffee Boy used to work in a Psychiatric Ward… They made moccasins for fun and games with the patients.

Really makes you want to name them after moccasins, eh?
(And here I was aiming for coherent!)

Sportweight socks–almost instant gratification! Those are lovely. I got some of the Yarntini sportweight in pink at the last Loopy Ewe Sneak Up, too.

I like Paige’s idea of “Ziggy Marley”. There can’t be any other socks in the sock universe with that name. Very cool!

Lucy–irresistible!

9 Sarah R 06.23.08 at 6:13 pm

They remind me of that toy that’s made up on little pieces of wood (or plastic) held together in such a way that you can bend the top piece back and forth and it looks as though the pieces are cascading down infinitely. I don’t know if this is the official name but we always called it a Jacob’s Ladder. So that’s my suggestion for the socks…Jacob’s Ladder.

(You could do magic tricks too, like make a coin “disappear.” Gee, now I wish I had my old Jacob’s Ladder.)

With the zig-zags and the stitching that climbs up the outside of the pattern, it reminds me of a game I played as a kid– so I suggest Chutes and Ladders.

11 Patricia 06.23.08 at 6:17 pm

I see lots of triangles…how about delta socks?

12 Hattie 06.23.08 at 6:20 pm

I know I’m unoriginal in this one, but all I see are laced up ballet shoes. I know they don’t REALLY lace them that way, but that’s what I see.

They sort of remind me of dragonflies, too. or butterflies. I am knitting the Peace Socks in some Yarntini sportweight and I really love the yarn. It’s squishy and soft!

It looks to me like the zigzags don’t quite meet in the front? Hard to tell for sure.

There’s a bunch of variations of “Zigzag” in the sock world, but this one seems to be original and I think suitable:

The Zagged Edge!

I see butterflies, but then I see little trellises up the sides. So, my suggestion (other than 5/12 a) is Butterfly Trellis Socks. :)
I got some yarntini in the Sneak Up last week, too. It might be next on my list. Current socks are Nanners in Claudia Hand Paint, Shells on the Beach. Your pattern showcases the subtleties in this colorway very well.

I think that pattern looks like one of those ribbon things that the gymnasts dance with folding back on itself — so? Ribbon Dance is my submission. That’s a fast sock, I’ve got to say.

22 Sarah 06.23.08 at 7:09 pm

Those are lovely socks. I’m afraid I am not much help for naming them. I know what you mean about wanting the cotton sweater but not being so fond about knitting with cotton. I guess it is good that I have so many things on the needles and schedule. I can wait to decide about making myself a new cotton top.

Funny how we all see different things! I think the side view makes them look like shoelaces, but maybe you should just call them Rorschach socks since we all come away with different images ;-)

Whatever you decide to call them, they’re great looking socks.

25 Dana 06.23.08 at 7:41 pm

It is funny how we all see different things. The first thing that came to my mind, a corset. So I think they should be Corset Socks. Which could be a cute tongue in cheek name too since they’re so squishy and comfy! :)

Here’s me chiming in. The first thing I thought of was snow angels. Thus, Snowy Summer socks. Kind of a weird name, but… hey. What can I say?

Otherwise, I think “Backgammon” is a perfectly acceptable moniker. :)

I, too, am curious about Lucy. I have long pictured a massive folder labeled with her name on your computer, but CatieP brings up an interesting point. With card readers and direct camera-to-comuter connections, it would be quite possible to post a picture taken just minutes ago. Please, enlighten us!

Ps. The socks are gorgeous.

After staring at these for awhile, I decided that the mirrored triangles that point toward the middle remind me of the Eiffel Tower. Thus I can’t help suggesting a French name (that corresponds to and sortof points out the color): Rose Eglantier.

Which means Briar Rose (btw, the first ‘e’ in eglantier has an accent, but my computer won’t put it on there!)
