The Long and Winding Sweater

by Wendy on October 2, 2008

It is time for the long haul — the knitting of plain stockinette for what seems like miles to complete the body of the Daily Sweater.

The miles of stockinette are relieved by one purl stitch at each side to create a side seam. I’ve put a marker before each purl stitch so I can zone out while knitting the stockinette. When I hit the marker I’ll remember to purl the next stitch. Theoretically.

I blame lack of knitting lately on this:

Those suckers are addictive. Once I get started with one, I  . . . can’t . . . stop . . . cleaning . . .

This is as clean as my kitchen has been in 10 years:

Dunno how long this cleaning kick will last, but it is nice to know that for one brief shining moment . . .

PolitiKat

Lucy enjoyed the Presidential debate so much last Friday night that I plan to allow her to watch the Vice-Presidential debate tonight.

Who knew she was such a political animal?

I love the picture of Lucy sitting in front of the TV!
If you still have the cleaning bug, you can come clean my dorm room, its not really that bad, I just don’t have the time to clean. The sweater looks beautiful by the way! I can’t wait until its done!

Magic erasers are addictive and they clean everything!

3 Tammy/DarthKnitter 10.02.08 at 4:46 pm

You have an open invitation to come to my house anytime you want to clean. I had friends over on Monday and one of them said she was stressed and “didn’t that just make you want to dust something?” I said, “no” and handed her a can of Pledge and a rag. My bookcases are spotless now.

Still loving the sweater I don’t mind doing a little stockinette every once in a while. I once had a cat that tried to catch football players in a pass screen and car tail lights on the TV. This would not be good for LCD set. Izzy doesn’t seem interested in TV.

Thanks for the Mr. Clean tip Wendy, hopefully it will work for me the same way!
Love that Lucy — who knew? Still waters run deep.

That’s why I never got into felting, because I get so bored by stockinette! And I know you must get tired of hearing it, but Lucy is SUCH a beautiful kitty! I’ve heard that ragdoll cats are comparatively affectionate cats, do you find this to be true?

8 Issy 10.02.08 at 5:10 pm

Lucy obviously enjoys comedy!!

Welcome to the dark side….. I got hooked on those things about six months ago. Now I *look* for things to clean

I love your Lucy photos and one of the best has got to be the shot of her in front of the television!
Your kitchen looks lovely and spotless. I will have to try one of those erasers. With (in order of messiness) two dogs and 3 kids and a husband and one cat … well, you get the picture. It was a bit
sad to hear Wednesday that the original actor who played ‘Mr. Clean’ in the ads on television passed away at the age of 92. I loved him in the commercials when I was a kid. I used to wish he would show up on Saturdays to help with our cleaning chores!

I love Magic Erasers!! I love how they take the soap scum off the bathtub!! Love the pic of Lucy!

So is she cheering on McCain or hissing at him? (Oh, I know. A polite feline will never tell.)

Theoretically. I love that word. It gets me into all sorts of trouble, that is for sure! Theoretically, once I take the Mr. Clean to my counter, I have to set aside a whole day - that thing gets stuff so clean that I feel bad for the rest of the counter top if I ignore it. Who knew a sponge could be so much fun!

Kudos to Lucy! It’s good to broaden our horizons!

I had never quite believed the hype on the Magic Erasers and then I had multiple people (friends and sisters) rave about them when I was complaining of the dingy paint on the cupboards in this house I moved into over the summer. WHAT. A. DIFFERENCE! They really *do* work as advertised (or better).

I think miles of stockinette is exactly what is called for as a knitting project during these debates!

The sweater is looking really adorable! I’ve been eyeballing that pattern lately. I may have to cast on sometime soon.

How adorable is Lucy watching the debate? omg! She’s too cute!

20 Laura 10.02.08 at 8:19 pm

OMG, isn’t the Magic Eraser the most amazing cleaning product ever? I know, I sound ridiculous being that emphatic about a stupid scrubbing sponge, but…. wow. The first time I got one, I literally cleaned every surface in my apartment and kept saying “Wow! So clean!”

The VP debate should be interesting tonight… I’ll be watching it with my kitties, too.

Magic Erasers are truly magic. They are the only way to get a flat top stove really clean. I love them!

I wish my kitten Ashford’s TV tastes were as sophisticated as Lucy’s. She prefers the puppy shows on Animal Planet over politics.

Any time you feel like bringing a suitcase of Magic Erasers over here and “demonstrating” how to use them, let me know. I’ll pay the air fare!

The sweater is looking good, and that shot of Lucy watching the debate is perhaps the most adorable yet.

I had a friend tell me to try the Magic Eraser on my shoes. The suckers clean more than walls for sure :) DD had green paint on her light purple Crocs and it even worked on those– they look new again!

28 kathleen 10.03.08 at 8:25 am

Magic erasers save you from painting as much by taking off all those marks that used to be permanent..
What did Lucy think of the VP debate..my Stinky glanced up and imediately fell asleep
I noticed your TV had closed captions on. With my hearing loss that is the only way I can watch TV .Sometimes it hard to knit and read at same time though.

Love the picture of Lucy watching the debate. I had a cat that would sit there and watch television as well. (they are characters).

Wish my kitchen were as clean!

Speaking of politics,
I thought all cats were “independent”……. (or quite possibly Libetarians).
You go, Lucy!

Maybe you’ve addressed this in the past, and if so, sorry for the redundancy, but what is the purpose of creating a false seam with the purl stitches? Is it just a personal preference thing because of how it looks? Just wondering! :)

Hey, did you know that Mr. Clean died today? He was 92 years old. What a coincidence with your post!

39 =Tamar 10.03.08 at 6:40 pm

Magic Erasers are like sandpaper. Don’t use them on wallpaper.
EZ used to knit all stockinette and then drop one stitch down and hook it back up to make a fake seam. Zone out forever and then drop and hook the single column for the purl stitches - do it from inside and it’ll be knit stitches as you work on them.

I love those magic erasers soooooo much! It is awful to find yourself acting and talking as if you were in some kind of freakin’ commercial — but dang, that product is so good you can’t help yourself!

Before I moved from California, I had to sell a stove that was actually fairly new. However, my daughter had a bad habit of cooking at very high heat and then not wiping the stove down afterwards. Then she’d cook something else before I got a chance to wipe it down, so anyway you get the picture — tough, cooked on rings around the burners.

I tried everything and could not get it clean. Then I happened upon a magic eraser and gave it a try. Without too much elbow grease I was able to clean every speck of anything foreign off of that stove and it looked just as new as it actually was.

Then, I was able to sell it for what it was worth.

I have been an ardent fan of the ME every since!

Warmest to you and Lucy,
firefly

44 Seanna Lea 10.06.08 at 9:43 am

My condo just went up on the market this weekend, so it is currently spotless. The cleaning would have gone a lot faster if I had one of those magic erasers! Of course, with the need to keep it clean, I’ve been spending about 30 minutes to an hour each day just making sure everything is put away and wiped down. I’m actually hoping that the condo is on the market just long enough for this good habit to be instilled in me, so it will be easier to keep a house clean later!
