See Wendy. See Wendy Rationalize.

See Wendy rationalize buying more yarn. Rationalize, Wendy, rationalize.

This week I got official word that I was selected for a job I applied for that amounts to a big promotion for me. Effective Monday. (It’s in my same agency, working with the same people, so no serious upheaval here.)

What’s the first thing you do when you get news like that? Why, buy yarn to celebrate, of course.

Would you believe that I don’t own a copy of Poetry in Stitches? Well, I do now. Or will soon, along with the kit to make this:

Poetry Sweater

I’ve been lusting after this sweater, ever since seeing the one that Catherine S. made. If you are a member of Norgeknit, you’ve seen it too, in the group’s Photos area.

Wanna do a Knit-along?

Would any of you people who are supervised by cats like to do an Aran Catnip Mouse Knit-along? Auntie Lolly came up with this idea when she was here for MDS&W. We were discussing my adopting Lucy and she said “Oh Wendy, you have to do a catnip mouse knit-along!”

I think it’s a great idea! Anyone wanna play?

Ebony Needle Update

I called the Needlepoint Joint yesterday and ordered the last 3.25mm 32″ ebony circular needle they had in stock. Thanks to Jo from Boston for tipping me off! I may at some point be able to do something to ressurect my chipped needle and that would be nice too. Always good to have a spare!

Lucy Update

Lucy was a big help to me last night — I was baking desserts for a birthday party this weekend. Here’s her contribution:

Very little knitting last night, due to baking (see above).

Have a great weekend, everyone. Contest winner will be announced Monday!

  1. Wheee! Congratulations on the promotion, Wendy! Well done.

  2. Way to go on your promotion!

  3. Congratulations! Well deserved, I’m sure.

I love that Poetry in Stitches design too. I have the kit for a different Poetry sweater which is quickly rising to the top of the queue.

Are you going to make a cardigan as designed or change it into a pullover?

  4. Thanks guys!

Michelle, my initial thought is to keep it as a cardi, but I may well convert it to a pullover. You know how I am . . .

    Which kit do you have?

  5. The pups and I send hearty congratulations and woofs! Very pleased for you on your promotion! What great news!

  6. shannon says:

I’m in for the catnip mouse knit-along! I might get my mom to dry and send me tons of the catnip that grows wild in her yard, if the stuff in my yard doesn’t work out.

And congratulations on the promotion!!! I just got one myself(same position, different grade).

  7. I hope your promotion makes these past hellish months worthwhile! I’m on for the Aran Catnip Mouse! Probably several knowing Lucky and Molly! I hope I get a good harvest from the catnip in my garden this year! Where did you order your Poetry in Stitches kit from?

  8. Cool! I’ve already got a couple of victims . . . er . . . participants in the knit-along! ๐Ÿ™‚

I got my kit from — I’ve ordered from them a few times and have always gotten great service.

  9. Kristin says:

Woo hoo! Congrats on your new post. Of course we all know the best celebration gift is the gift of yarn (and yarn related items) so indulge…you deserve it ๐Ÿ™‚

I love Poetry in Stitches. I got that book & Norsk Strikkedesign as my Mother’s Day gift from DH & DS. (Actually, they took me to a YS and let me pick out my gift. What more could I ask for?)

I am infatuated with so many sweaters from these books, I don’t know what I want to do next. The autumn leaf cardigan is gorgeous. Great pick!

So, enjoy your yarn buying frenzy > spree. You have certainly earned it!

  10. Wendy, did the Norwegian Sweaters and More Norwegian Sweaters books by Takle & Kolstad ever strike up your interest?

  11. L-B I own one (and possibly both) of them. As I recall, nothing in them really grabs me and screams “Knit me!”

But you never know — I may change my mind!

  12. Congratulations on your promotion! Now do you get to tell *other* people that you need it RIGHT NOW!!!? (Even if you don’t, the money is nice! ;-))

I would love to knit-along an aran mouse or 3. I’m just not sure my ruffians need any catnip to make them crazy. I might leave that part out. :\

    Stay dry!

  13. Congratulations – I hope it isn’t the kind of promotion that means a lot more work!

I have the kit for the tunic version of the Poetry cover sweater. It may be my next color project (after I hurry up and finish a Dale cotton sweater for summer). I got mine at Sommerfuglen in Denmark. I mean, by mail from Denmark!

  14. It’s funny how our tastes in designs can teeter-totter. I’ve always preferred traditional patterns and wouldn’t look twice at the “inspired by” designs. Then, Poetry in Stitches and Norsk Strikkedesign suddenly called out to me. Now,I want to take a second look at the Takle & Kolstad books.

  15. Yup, Andrea. I am DA BOSS! (insert maniacal laughter here.) I WANT IT NOW!

Caroline, shouldn’t be too much more work — I’ve been “acting” in this position since the beginning of August of last year so I pretty much know what to expect.

  16. Congrats on your promotion! But of course you will buy yarn! Yay!

I would love to knit along on a catnip mouse!!! I have never made one, although my daughter used to knit little gnomes filled with catnip! Fun fun!

Lucy looks so relaxed and when you see a kitty lying with their belly up, you know they are feeling loved and open to their surroundings… its just wonderful! What a beauty! She seems to have a lot of personality!

  17. Congratulations on the promotion Wendy!

I’m in for the knit along, too. I’ve got three kitties that would love the end product. ๐Ÿ™‚

  18. Can’t believe you even had to rationalize…hehe. Congrats on the promotion! I LOVE that sweater. I was debating on buying that book, but that does it, I am going to order it right now. That sweater is gorgeous!

And Lucy looks to be as shameless and as photogenic as Peanut. ๐Ÿ™‚

  19. Congratulations on the promotion Wendy!

I can understand you completely! I received a project-bonus from my company two months ago and guess what I did!?! Bought my first Alice Starmore book (“Tudor Roses”) and the yarn to make Henry VIII along with ebony-circulars!

The cardi from “Poetry in Stitches” is truly wonderful. I have made it last year, the colors are much brighter and nicer than in the pictures. And with the velvet front-band the cardi looks really dressed-up. There also is a pic at the norgiknit list in photos under my name.

Have a great weekend everybody, greetings from Germany, Ursula

  20. I have the Poetry in Stitches book…love to just drool over the pictures and matching scenery. I have the body of the seaside cardigan complete. (Page 136) It is gorgeous. I don’t know why I stopped. Thanks for giving me the motivation to go back to it.

  21. vanessa says:

big congrats! i love that sweater too, may have to wander over to the website for the yarn….

  22. I’d be in on a knit-a-long as well…Grimmy is a freak for catnip, and maybe it’d stop him from chasing after my roving all the time. Or, not, but a girl can dream!

By the way, do you have some secret vendetta against cardigans? Just noticed the question above, and come to think of it, you *do* mostly knit pullovers…I’m in a nosy mood today. ๐Ÿ™‚

  23. Hey cool! Lotsa knit-along participants! We’ll figure out what we’re gonna do next week.

Meghan, I generally make pullovers because I wear them more than cardis. ๐Ÿ™‚

  24. Beth S. says:

Way to go, Wendy! It’s nice to get official recognition for the work you’ve already been doing, huh? ๐Ÿ˜‰

What do you think of the “new” Roscalie colors, as compared with the ITH versions? It looks like the VY Roscalie is a kind of hybrid of the two original colorways.

  25. Another Bonne says:

Congrats on the promotion and congrats on your new absolutely beautiful Lucy! I am definitely in on the catnip mouse knit-along. Perhaps if I offer gifts to my 4 kittys they will allow me to knit uninterrupted. I can dream, can’t I?

    Another Bonne

  26. Congratulations Wendy! Well-deserved, and requiring (IMHO) a new yarn purchase.

I would love to do an Aran catnip mouse knit-along. My Shroom loves catnip mice.

    I see Lucy is a rolly-cat. You’ve given us a lot of tummy-up photos. What a sweetheart!

  27. I’d love to knit the catnip mouse. I’d probably have some competition over which of my 4 cats would claim it. I’d just have to make 4!

    Congrats on your promotion!

  28. Congratulations on the promotion!

Also wanted to say that I would love to do the fair isle catnip mouse felt along.

  29. Elizabeth says:

    Congratulations on the big promotion!

Count me in on the catnip mouse knit-along. My boys always end up batting them under the stove. They once caught a real mouse that came into the house under the stove, so I think it might be magical thinking on their parts. (You know, bat a toy mouse under there and have an exciting real mouse come out.)

  30. Cheryl F. says:

Congrats on your increase in yarn income! (Oh, and a promotion goes with that too?)
I’ve forgotten, but is your Rosecalie the VY kit or the original (muted) colors in ITH? Lookin’ good–
And, I’m in for the catnip mouse knit-along. Something that size I may actually finish and we’ve got an industrial size tub of “Cosmic Catnip” that’s just beggin’ to be “in” something.
When we sprinkle it on Mr. Bigglesworth’s post, he usually just snorts it all over the place–quite undignified!!

  31. Cheryl F. says:

So, sorry, just should’ve read your sidebar–the VY kit. So….how do the colors compare???

  32. Promotion just means you’ll finally see the pay increase for the work you already do ! But its nice to be recognized isn’t it ?
I got a contract raise this week, so off the the LYS I went, got new shiney set of #3 addi’s, didn’t you say you couldn’t find 3.25 mm ? These are 3.25mm 24″ addi turbo’s…
Oh and also had to pick up some more sock yarn.
hehehe off to finish the pair I’m working on with a MUCH MUCH nicer set of needles that I was using. Congrats to you Wendy, for Lucy and the promotion !

  33. I’ll talk about differences I can discern in my Roscalie and the original after some scrutiny — look for it Monday.

YarnGuy, yeah, in a sense I’m getting pay and recognition for what I was already doing. I work for the government, so I’m getting is a GS grade increase — which is a pretty big deal.

The 3.25mm I was whining about not being able to find is an ebony circular in 32″ length. And I did find the last one in existence in the universe and bought it yesterday.

  34. I would love to do the knit along, keep us posted! (my kitty will be so pleased!)

  35. Count me in for the Aran catnip mouse knit-along. Zoe will be pleased that I’m finally making something for her.

  36. Wooo hooo! Major congratulations. I can’t wait to see what you decide to get.

I’m totally interested in the knit-a-long, though I’ll probably finish last. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Congratulations once again!

  37. I’m definitely in for a catnip mouse knit-along. I’m not sure I know about Aran catnip mice however. Can we see a picture somewhere? I looked at Nordic Fiber Arts but didn’t see anything on their website. I do have their catalog at home, but I also have several other catnip mice patterns.

The Poetry in Stitches cardigan is gorgeous. I’ve had my eye on that one for a long time. But I know beyond any doubt that I don’t want to get in a knit-along with Wendy on a sweater! I’d be left in the dust ๐Ÿ˜‰

  38. Hey, great choice on the POS! (It’s the only kit I have, I love that combo of rose/pink and springy greens). I look forward to watching you knit it first. And huge congratulations on your promotion! I think it should be mandatory for all promotees to buy themselves something (preferably yarny) to commemorate these occasions.

  39. Wow! Wendy will have minions to do her bidding. Way to go!

PS My kitty would love an aran mousie. And I have some of his favorite Brown Sheep worsted to do it in. He loves to ferociously ‘kill’ any skeins he can get his paws on.

  40. Gratulerer med forfremmelsen, Wendy! (I hate repeating what everybody else writes, so I’m doing it in Norwegian… You understand, don’t you? ๐Ÿ™‚

Guess what? I finally remembered to ask if they had catnip in the pet store today. And that was before I read this. Must have been telepathy! Count me in! ๐Ÿ™‚

  41. Yeah! Congrats Wendy!

I’m in for a knit-along. Don’t overlook your local health-food/bulk spice section. I got some pretty powerful catnip there not too long ago. It turns my 13 yr old cat into a panther (when nobody is looking of course).

  42. Congratulations on the promotion!! More money, more yarn…seems plenty reasonable to me!

Kato wants me in on the catnip mouse knitalong. Sound like one way to keep her out of my yarn for a second or two (yeah, right….)

  43. Congratulations on that promotion, Hot Stuff!!! Didn’t you just get that job recently? You must be absolutely kicking butt there!!

  44. Congrats Wendy on your promotion. After a quick discussion the amazing three approved, with decisive meows, my motion that I join the Aran Catnip Mouse Knit-along (as long as I make one for each of them!).

  45. Congrats on your promotion!!!! You deserve it (and the yarn)! Does having my kid make it to almost three with me in charge count as a promotion? WOO HOO!! I guess I better go out and buy more yarn!!!

Count me in for the fair isle mouse knit along… I will be on vacation next week, so Sam and Maggie may have to wait for their mice!! BTW, Sam hides his under the fridge, then stands smack dab in front of me as I try to fish them out with super long cooking chopsticks.

Lucy seems to be real comfy, fitting right in at home… Maggie spreads her belly out like that, though at 14lbs (and all hips), it’s very comical.

  46. Congrats, Wendy! And count me in on the mouse-along, too. (Even though Ethan was recently gifted with a Knitty wonton.) Do you think Marit would like to make us a button?

  47. Congratulations on the promotion!!! You deserve it and the yarn and book purchase. Count me in too on the catnip mouse, my two would love to have their own toys (as long as I can keep them away from the dog who will eat anything). I plan to celebrate with yarn when I finally get a job again, being unemployed for over a year has been no fun but I have finished up some projects I thought I would never finish.

  48. Like everyone else says, congrats on the new position! ๐Ÿ™‚ Lucy definitely looks helpful..when they’re not in the kitchen with you trying to take a morsel of this or that, it’s MUCH easier! I used to have a cat that I had to put in the bedroom when cooking…he’d run off with a piece of chicken… none of our cats are that bad now… they’re interested in my cooking, but they’re sort of polite about it…

I’d like to check out the knit along! I may not have time to do it, but let me know the details!

  49. Way to go girl – getting the montary recognition you deserve! Frazier and Niles are telling me they don’t care if I have two birthday gifts to complete and the Bear Isle knit-along coming soon, Kitties come first. So I’m in for the catnip Aran – will give me something to do with this MF 1824 wool – since the discussion of it “growing” I won’t be using it for Inishmore:(

  50. Hi again. To answer your question from many hours ago (since 5:30am): I have a kit for the pullover sweater that appeared in Interweave knits awhile back. It’s shades of coral and orange. Actually not my first choice (the one you’re doing may have been), but I figured I already had the pattern. My laughable attempt to economize. Pity though, I’ll probably end up buying the book eventually anyway.

  51. Congratulations on your promotion Wendy! Count me in on the catnip mouse knit-along. My kitties will be thrilled.

Lucy seems to be settling in quite well. She’s a real beauty!

  52. Hi Wendy – I remember once a photo of your cedar chest, open with sweaters on top. I heard it said once that one should not allow one’s sweaters to be in contact with the inside of a cedar chest. You obviously don’t have them in pillowcases or anything – do you worry about that at all?? Thanks!

  53. I’m all for the catnip mouse. My two love the knitty dim sum above all other toys!

  54. Please add my CONGRATULATIONS to the list -BRAVO! And count me in for the kitty toy knit-along. I’ve got four cats who will be very interested….

  55. This is Linus… Typing is super hard with paws, but I wanted to make sure that my human couldn’t decide not to make me a catnip mousie. This way, she’ll feel guilty for having already committed to the knit-along! Hooray!

She might make one for my sister Cleo, too, but I don’t really care as long as I get one.

    P.S. Hey Lucy – rowr!

  56. Oh YES!!!!!!!

  57. Mick and Bowie say yes to Aran catnip mice. We already have four knitted mice (with bobble ears and long i-cord tails). It is from a free web pattern that can also be felted (I will wrestle them to snap photos of their toys and put the pattern link up on my blog next week). But like I need more yarn (and shoes), the boys need more toys.

  58. If you need further rationalization, just tell yourself that, whatever you knit, you’ll be imparting invaluable advice to hundreds of your blog readers. I’m looking forward to seeing the Poetry in Stitches project.

  59. Congratulations Wendy!
The 2 kitties and 2 poms-who-LOVE-cat-toys are in for the catnip mouse knit-along ๐Ÿ™‚
(Not that they plan to do any of the knitting, more’s the pity…)

  60. My crew would jump on the chance for a legitimate reason to tackle my knitting. A knit along sounds great to me!

    Congrats on the new job!

  61. I’d like to join the mouse knit-along too please! Anything to distract the little darlings from my active knitting. I opened a parcel of rovings this morning, turned my back to make a cup of tea and a flash of purple followed by tabby and white disappeared through my legs and out the cat flap. I’m sure the neighbours were amused by me chasing down the garden after Jack and my wool!

  62. i’d love to join another knit-along! i made the mistake of buying ONE catnip toy at MDS&W! both kitties wanna play!

  63. Corinne says:

Please count me in the cat-aran-knit-along, my kitties would be thrilled.

  64. I would love to participate in the knit along. I’m a pretty slow knitter though, hope everyone doesn’t leave me behind.

  65. I would also like to join the ‘catnip mouse knit-along’, I don’t have a blog though!

  66. Congrats on the promotion, Wendy! I, too, want to knit along!! I don’t have a kitty, but my Smudge-baby (a tiny teacup Yorkie) will love it anyway!!

  67. I would love to do the catnip mouse knit along, count me in.
Roscalie looks lovely, I love your choice of colours.
It’s wonderful you found Lucy through Petfinder, that’s how I found my dog. It’s a great site.

  68. I’d love to do a catnip mouse knit-along! I’ve never done aran, so this might be interesting for me, beyond the norm. ๐Ÿ™‚
The cats will love it — I owe them big time for moving around all their furniture in anticipation for major house renovation here. Perhaps a catnip mouse would buy a bit of forgiveness?

  69. Ruth D. says:

I’d like to do the mouse knit along too.
Wendy, I love your St. Moritz page. But I have a request/question. Can you also include the start date of your projects? I always wonder when a person starts and finishes. Even if it spends 6mos in a wip pile.

Like my FI…. it’s been finished once a year ago and I ripped out the sleeves this winter to make them shorter and now I need to re do the front button bands so my very first FI sweater has been 3 yr in the making. LOL

  70. Shirley says:

I’m ready for the catnip mouse knitalong too. I have a skein of Brown Sheep Naturespun in peacock blue, which will look lovely with Milo’s black body. I’m also going to make one (without the catnip) for my Chinese Crested dog. I’m convinced she is half cat – she plays the same way and uses her paws and stalks the way cats do, and I know she will love one. I need a small project right now.
