My current work in progress:

Seaforth designed by Alice Starmore, knit in British Breeds 5-ply Guernsey Wool on US 3 needles.

Just a Quickie . . .

. . . because I am one tired buckaroo after this past weekend.

Friday night, a party to launch my book. Big thanks to Kristine who let us have it at Knit Happens, and equally big thanks to Holly, Phyl, L-B, and the KOARC who helped me with the planning and execution of said event!

I posted some random party pix on a separate page, so those of you who would like to see them, go there for a look-see, please!

Saturday afternoon was my first book signing, also at Knit Happens.

Note the wristwarmers — they were knitted and beaded by Johanne to match my book cover — I’ll post a better photo tomorrow.

One of the first people I met was another Wendy, and not just any Wendy, but the organizer of the Knitting Wendys webring!

My good buddy L-B was there too, of course, and she brought me this that she knitted for me:

This is a banner/table runner/scarf knitted from ArtYarns Supermerino, in the colors of my book cover, with “Wendy Knits” knitted into it! Is that not the coolest?

My Mom and Dad came too:

I can pretty much guarantee that this past weekend was the most time my Dad has ever spent in a yarn shop in his life.

I met my mom’s friend Julie:

A couple of movie stars stopped by as well:

No, they aren’t really movie stars, they just look like they could be. That’s Jessica, one of my editors, and her friend Adam. They delivered this:

A box of Jacques Torres chocolates, a gift from my editors. Oh . . . my . . .

The King of All Remote Controls and I enjoyed them thoroughly.

L-B attempts to hide behind my book poster, but I think everyone pretty much knows now that she and I are not the same person.

And thank you to everyone who came by to say hello and have a book signed — it was great to meet you.

Lucy? Lucy stayed at home and relaxed.

Knitting talk tomorrow. Honest.

  1. okay, i received my book from amazon yesterday and i have to know: did anyone else get a copy with a chunk of the pages bound in upside down and back to front?

other than the odd little maneuver i had to make [flip the book, flip ahead a bunch of pages, read and repeat] it was a great read. okay, great skim. i’m looking forward to really reading it over the course of the next few evenings, and looking forward to knitting several of the patterns.

    congratulations, wendy!

  2. What a fun party! And you deserve it! Congrats! I finished reading your book and will definitely try out a couple of the projects! You’re going to be mighty tired the next few weeks with all this book signing!

  3. I am so sorry I missed that, but I’m planning to come see you at MSW next weekend. I can’t wait to get the book — I didn’t see it in the B&N stores I checked this week. ๐Ÿ™ (Probably sold out already!)

  4. Congratulations! If this keeps up you’ll be able to quit your day job! Hope you and L-B can make it to Va Beach this summer after your initial tour.

  5. Oh, that banner/table runner/scarf? What a wonderful new-book gift! That’s just fabulous, Wendy! Congratulations!

  6. What a fantastic party, Wendy! Thanks for sharing the photos with us. It’s so great to “know” a cool celebrity (insert ironic giggling here).

  7. Wendy – I picked up your book last night, and its wonderful!

  8. Hey Katrina,

My copy has a signature* bound upside down also. I got it in Seattle. I saw a comment on Wendy’s blog a couple days ago from someone in CA with the same issue. I suspect there’s a bunch out there, perhaps they all went to a West Coast distributor? The bookstore was very apologetic and offered to send it back or something. All the pages are there, so I didn’t mind. I am enjoying it a lot.

Wendy, congrats on the party and the book.

*that’s the technical word for it.

  9. Congrats on the culmination of a ton of work, Wendy. Looks like fun! Coming to St. Louis?

  10. What a great weekend!! That L-B is one talented lady and such a good friend. My book is on the way from Amazon; can’t wait to see if the pages were put together by some margarita crazed monkey!

  11. Congrats!!! And what a great huge copy to hang somewhere on your wall of fame. And the shawls from the party pic are just gorgeous!

  12. Congratulations!! Will your book be translated? May be a little early to know yet?

  13. Your mom was so cute. And the KOARC makes lovely champagne cocktails.

  14. What a wonder celebration! Love the photo’s. I finished reading your book last night. I share so many of your feelings about knitting – its the process for me too – I love the movement – I can get into a zen state of mind – (explains so many finished but unblocked items sitting in my sewing room) too. And I’ve been called an “old lady” for knitting at work..

So when are you coming to Denver? We have yarn shops too!

  15. From the photos it looks like a fantastic night. Glad it went well!

  16. Knitters rock, don’t they? Congratulations on the book, the signing, and all the wonderful themed gifts!

  17. Congrats! Wish I could have been there. But now that there’s a genuine yarn shop in Corpus Christi, maybe you could come down for a signing here.

  18. Wendy,
Congratuations on your signing. I bought a copy of your book yesterday at my Borders in Cincinnati. I think I got the only copy they had, unless someone beat me to it. I am enjoying reading it very much. We both had similar experiences as far as how we began knitting. I was able to relate to alot of what you expressed.

  19. I love the three-shawls pic. Tell your Mom we need to find a water-tower for a Petticoat Junction pic! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  20. Congrats, Wendy! I looked at B&N in the city and Hoboken yesterday and they didn’t have it in stock yet. Looking forward to it!

  21. Thanks for posting the great pics! I picked up my ordered copy here in the midwest on Saturday and I love everything in it. Congratulations on a great book!

  22. Thanks for sharing…..great photos….love the shawl sisters…..and the KOARC socks… those champagne cocktails were divine……your parents must be bursting with pride/joy/happiness…..& your editor is truly straight out of Hollywood!…….well done…….

  23. Wendy,
I just found your book this afternoon at Borders bookstore in Ft Worth Texas. The great cover caught my eye, so off I went to get some coffee and check it out.Needless to say I bought it and I’m anxious to read it.Congrats on the book……Amy in Texas

  24. What an orgasmically fun book launch party! I really enjoyed meeting L-B and your mom, too! Sweethearts, both of them! I’m ready for your sequel! =)

  25. I just got your book today and it has been a great skim! I look forward to reading it in detail. I also can’t wait to try knitting toe up socks!

  27. how exciting!

  28. Looks like a great time was had by all!! Love L-B’s banner!

Are ya thinking about Florida for the winter! KORAC can even have MY remotes when you guys stay here! ๐Ÿ™‚

  29. I spent today reading your wonderful book, and it felt like I was reading about a friend! What’s with the “Knit one, purl two” line delivered by cackling non-knitters???? Loved the book, the patterns, and as always, the pictures of lovely Lucy. Congratulations. :o)

  30. Wow! I feel a little famous by association. ๐Ÿ™‚
Thanks so much for signing my book ‘early’ – getting to meet you and take home a copy of your book was such an added surprise bonus to my weekend. I love your chapter on socks – and it actually made me miss the Metro a bit. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Knit on!

  31. I mentioned to Wendy several days ago that my copy came with upside down pages too – I’m also on the west coast. replaced it immediately – got my new copy within two days. And it’s been read from cover to cover and yarn has been bought for the Lucy tank!

  32. Congratulations on the book launch!! Looks like a good time was had by all.

  33. That’s just so cool!

  34. Hmmm… maybe I’ll get a special “upside down” copy when mine comes from Amazon!!

Congratulations on a wonderful super-special evening. I’m sure you’re still on Cloud 9 wondering when you’ll wake up. Have a fun fun time arriving at reality. ๐Ÿ™‚

  35. I’m SO glad that I saw this post before I go out this week to get your book. I didn’t know it’d be so FREAKIN’ HUGE! I’ll need a cart. Thanks for the heads up.

    ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜‰

  36. Ooo wow – so excited for you!

  37. Lisa Mike Jack Della + Cousin Bear says:

    Wendy in CO

  42. Congratulations! Thanks for sharing the photos. You look so happy with your friends and family,
and, off course, with your knitting superviser sitting on your sofa. Your book seems to be far bigger than I imagined(kidding),I can not wait for my copy.

your photos made me feel this sence of awesomeness!
especially the pics of your mom and dad!

    wonderful, all round!!!!

  44. Congratulations, Wendy. I’ve read my copy from cover to cover and it is wonderful. Looks like you had a fantastic book signing party. You deserve all the praises and partying you can work in. ๐Ÿ™‚

  45. Suzanne says:

I am so glad that you have such a fun group of people to celebrate with, Wendy. It looks like you had a wonderful night.

  46. Congratulations! I am thoroughly enjoying reading your book of knitting memoirs every night before I go to bed. That’s NOT to say it puts me to sleep. It’s just that I have a few spare minutes then that are hard to come by otherwise. Cuz when I’m up for the day, the only thing I’ll do when sitting is knitting. Your stories are so much fun to share. Thank you for doing so. And great beginner projects as well. I taught some teens to knit this past year and started them on a lengthwise scarf. Won’t do that again. Your washcloths and chunky scarves would have been better.
And WOW to the Wendy Knits scarf/banner/thingy. You sure are blessed with most excellent friends!

  47. Contrats on your first book signing! It looked like loads of fun with lots of love from friends and family! I love my book and hopefully there will be another in the works! See you at MS&W this weekend! I am really excited!

  48. Looks like a great time was had by all. Congratulations Wendy! I hope there’s a West Coast tour in your future. Lots of shops and knitters in the Pacific Northwest…

  49. What a GREAT party that must have been. The knitted banner (filet knitting? wow) is breathtaking! And the chocolates… oh my oh my.

If the rain holds off, I’ll take a walk down to the university bookstore at lunchtime to see if I can find the magnum opus. Though it’s probably a little early to expect it–last time I checked, they didn’t even have Stephanie’s yet.

  50. looks like it was the best time..and may you sell out and keep those printers churning!

  51. Congratulations! and thank you for sharing all the party photos- we enjoyed meeting you and the KOARC and your Parents and LB on Saturday so very much. It was a real pleasure. Love to Lucy!

  52. That has to be one of the great parties of a lifetime – your very first book-signing!!!

Congrats to one of The Great Knitters.

  53. Michele says:

Congratulations! I am looking forward to buying your book, and love your blog.

  54. I really need to travel more. I would love to have been there. It looks like it was a lot of fun.

  55. Wendy – Congratulations! Amazon tells me my copy is en route and, boy, am I excited. I wish you were signing books in Tallahassee, but I understand that it is a little out of your way.

    Kisses to Lucy!

  56. Tamara says:

Dang, you look hot in that dress! Wowie wow wow wow. ๐Ÿ™‚ Glad you had fun!

  57. Woo-HOO, looks like you had fun! Love the handknit swag from your fans & friends. Lucky! xoxo Kay

  58. But what I want to know is did your mom bring a cake, afterall according to your book she makes the best cakes. While you were having your signing out in the East, here in the Midwest I stopped at Borders and finally picked my copy up. I must say well done. I’m so happy Ingrid is in there.

I also loved the part about your brother and his blue sweater, that your sister-in-law has tried to throw away.

  59. The Book arrived today.
    I love it.

  60. Congratulations!! I saw your book 2 weeks ago in Hawaii! I scanned it, like it much-much, and will buy it, but maybe you want to tour it in Honolulu? We have an enthusiastic contingent of knitters here, with 3 groups meeting weekly on Oahu alone! You know you’ll need a vacation…

  61. I am soooo happy for you, I can’t even say! Oh, congratulations!

  62. Hi, Wendy! I am new to your blog and also just got a copy of your book to review for my knitters’ guild. So far, terrific!! (both the book and the blog!) Also, I too have a very (ahem) HELPFUL kitty named Lucy who I rescued from a garage sale about 11 years ago. She enjoys preventing the yarn from floating out of it’s various storage places. Does cat hair interfere with felting, ’cause my Lucy loves my Lopi stash. Congrats on the book! Hope to meet you if you ever visit St. Louis.

  63. Congrats!!! It looks like fabulous fun.

  64. Congrats on the book and a great party! =)

  65. Yay, you!!!!!!!

  66. Sandra says:

Somehow I found your site on which you had links to the shawls you had knitted. What beautiful beautiful work! I checked out each one. Do you do some of these as gifts? Or do you have the most wonderful shawl-wardrobe ever?
    Thanks for sharing the pics.
