To Gusset or Not to Gusset

Several of you have asked me that since I now seem to be doing all my toe-up socks with a gusset, do I prefer that to the short-row heel?

I dunno. Maybe.

I just got sick of the short-row heel after doing it exclusively for so long. Change is good.

Speaking of the gusset heel, I am mid-heel on my second Pagoda Lace sock.

I didn’t go to work today so I had some extra time to work on it. I had a doctor’s appointment today — here’s how long I had to wait at the doctor’s office:

The photo’s a bit blurry — sorry about that.

The “How Many Socks” Contest

I have put together the spreadsheet with all the guess in my “how many socks will Wendy knit during the Summer of Socks” contest. Thanks to the majority of you who followed the instructions and put just the number in the subject line, it was fairly easy to export all the emails into a spreadsheet and sort by the subject field.

There was a total of 783 entries. The lowest guess was 6 pairs. The highest guess was 218 pairs. (The number “42” was well-represented, by the way.)

My best guess is that I will knit somewhere between 6 and 218 pairs of socks. You heard it here first, folks.

Miss Lucy

That was quite a dramatic pic of Lucy yesterday, huh? She looked so alarmed at the thought of me not being online. How did I get such a photo?

I pointed the camera at her and said “Give me surprise, baby! Give me shock! Come on, baby, work it!”

Nah. Actually there is some maintenance work being done on our condo balconies and periodically guys on scaffolding appear outside the window. Lucy is staring at them.

Like in this photo.

  1. Kristin says:

    Hi Wendy!
Socks look great! Can you give us the stitch pattern for the double eyelet rib? I don’t need the whole sock pattern, but just the basic stitch pattern. Or could you direct me to a link that has it?
    Thanks! Keep on knitting…….:)

  2. Tigger's Mom says:

So you had to wait, what, 5, 10 minutes? LOL! (Really, sorry you had to spend any time at a doctor’s office.)

Lucy is a treasure, and your socks are divine!

  3. Lucy today: “Here’s intensity! How’s that, Momma!” Eyes like pretty blue laser beams! Those guys on the scaffolding must be riveting her attention.

It’ll be fun playing with socks this summer, I bet. Hope your back is starting to settle down (maybe the doctor helped; I’m sure the long wait in a waiting room chair didn’t, though, sock or no sock).

  4. Are you taking pictures of the workers a la Dave Daniels?? Got any eye candy to share? Or is Lucy keeping all those photos to herself??

Lucy S. Ragdoll is the winner of this year’s Blogger’s Choice Awards for Surprise, Shock & Awe all in one photo!

  5. Your socks look lovely as always Wendy. Even better, I think you might be right in with my admittedly faulty “time line” for sock completion. *grin*
Lucy has looked VERY siamese in the last couple of photos. I love how their eyes literally focus in on the objects that catch their interest.

  6. Allyson says:

So Lucy gave you her “Le Tigre”?

  7. Dear Wendy,

The socks look wonderful. I hope your back feels better soon.

  8. Lisa in Georgia says:

    Hope you’re feeling better soon!

I think Lucy is hypnotizing the workers…

  9. Ha! Well, somebody has to supervise those guys! And it looks like Lucy’s on top of the job.

  10. Your pic of Lucy yesterday was soooo wonderful I made it wallpaper for my work PC. It is lovely to look at (repeated) shocked, amazed Lucy(s).

I just love that Pagoda sock pattern and that delicious yarn colorway. I do hope you will share the pattern with your fans.

Doc’s office… hmmmm… bummer, but as another WF (WendyFan) stated, it couldn’t have been more than 5 minutes!
Hope you feel better very, very soon! luv.m.

  11. Now that you have put the guesses on a spreadsheet do you feel that you will be influenced by the guesses? The power of persuasion and all.

What was the KOARC’s guess by the way? 218 or higher?

  12. 6 – I guess it’s possible, but let’s hope not!! LOL

  13. I’m with Lorri, assuming KOARC entered that 218 guess. Does he know something we don’t?

I’m so ADD, I have now cast on 3 new pair and haven’t finished a heel on one yet. We’re not talking about the 3 pairs which lack one or two rows, or a kitchener from being finished. Nope, we’re not going to mention those. Only those started since the Solstice.

  14. I hope you are feeling better and that the Dr. had possitive things to say. Love the waitingroom progress. What ever did we do in waitingrooms before knitting? ๐Ÿ˜‰

My neighbor’s mother is selling ragdoll kitties… I think they are so beautiful. My kitty, Keegan (a Mainecoon), went missing a year and 6 days ago. I just don’t know if I’m ready to move on quite yet. But the pictures of Miss Lucy just make my day!

  15. Barbara Miller says:

42? OK, that was my guess too. Hmm…Hitchhikers Guide anyone?

  16. I’d be staring back . . .

  17. Hi Wendy,

Do you have a sock pattern reccommendation for someone with a small foot. Size 5.5-6? All the single socks I have made have ended up with a huge saggy heel and Im not sure how to adjust it so I was thinking to find a kids pattern? I was thinking for something plain.

  18. I’m ashamed to admit that rather than knitting, I have one book I read while waiting in Doctor’s offices:
“The KnowItAll” is very funny and good for reading just a few pages at a time. I am 7/8 done with it, and it took 6 months is all! Wendy, I hope you’re feeling better. I still say that yesterday’s Lucy pic is The Best Kity Picture Of All Time!

  19. Lucy has the most amazing eye color. Stare those workmen down girl.
The Knittery has new sock colors up. Not that I want to start a stampede or anything.
I hope your back is better soon.

  20. perhaps 218 is actually a hint from KOARC at how much sock yarn Wendy has stashed!

  21. I guessed 42! I think! That makes me totally average doesn’t it?

Lucy is TOO CUTE! Such blue eyes! ๐Ÿ™‚ I hope your back is getting better…

  22. There are guys on scaffolding outside your window?? Maybe you should offer them socks. You know, so they can remove shirts and stuff but still be modest and all…

Or just roll them in catnip. Just as sexy, and possibly smelling better ๐Ÿ™‚

  23. I’m not an expert knitter. Bt I managed to cope with the short-row heels and make them kind of pretty. Gussets are still beyond me, but if I made myself do them, I’d probably be okay. But then, anything beyond stockinette and basic ribbing still throws me. ๐Ÿ™‚

  24. Hee hee…6…

  25. I feel that I guessed a bit low now ….. but it was not six, it was a much higher multiple of six lol And of course my low guess was based on the notion you will veer away from socks at some point this summer. And also based on the fact that my sock knitting is so slow I couldn’t imagine it possible that anyone could knit more pairs in that time ….. I feel that I am soon to stand corrected ๐Ÿ™‚

  26. Hey Lucy- are they worth staring at like in the beverage commercial, you know, (it was a few years back) that had the ladies in the office staring out the window at break time ? or just – eh.

  27. I’m a DPN girl through-and-through, so when I get a pattern centered like yours, instead of dividing the stitches into thirds for the 3 needles, I put the front half on one, and the back half split onto two needles. I find I need to be a little more careful about ladders, but it seems to work well!

  28. Lucy has to be one of the most beautiful cats I have ever seen (with the exception of my own two handsome boy kitties that is) She really is a lovely girl.

While I didn’t join the official “summer of socks” group, I am knitting my socks anyway, have to make room for more sock yarn! I like the eyelet sock you are knitting, really nice the way the colorway flows with the pattern. Hopefully you will be posting that pattern?????

  29. As much as I love knitting and socks…I just adore Lucy and her pics!!!

  30. Alright, now watch you knit 219! Great pics of Lucy. I wish I could get my kitty to sit still long enough.

Did someone say new yarn at the Knittery? (sound of footsteps running away…)

  31. I have a confession–after umty-ump years of knitting I have never done a short-row heel. It’s not that I’m chicken or anything, it’s just that the heel flap style fits my foot well. And I’m in a rut!

Love the Pagoda Lace! Love Lucy! I think of her as I work on my STR Lucy socks.

  32. Awww, Lucy looks so adorable in that photo! The angle makes it look like she’s crosseyed ๐Ÿ˜€ The funniest thing that ever happened with my cat was when we had roofers fixing our roof (tornado tore off shingles). He ran all over the house, looking up at the ceiling trying to figure out what exactly the banging sounds were.

  33. After two tries knitting toe-up socks and making the foot too long before starting the heel (but not realizing this until the heel was KNIT), I’m now wondering if knitting a short row heel and eliminating the gusset would solve my problem. I figured you’d be the best person to ask! Any opinion?

  34. Patricia says:

Are the workers staring back at Lucy?

  35. Based on current progress, I am still confident in my guess of 26. Mostly because I have a hard time believing that you will let that silk scarf sit in a bag for three months. Plus, other projects can be so tempting!

  36. That was some wait in the Doc’s office huh? I know you knit fast, but still….
    The Lucy photos are stunning!

  37. I’m hoping to finish at least 10 pair for the “most socks” category. I have 3 socks that I’m to the foot on. Good Luck!! Hope your back is better soon!

  38. Isn’t Craig Ferguson delightful?

  39. Perhaps that guy was doing something amusing ๐Ÿ˜‰ She’s so cute.

  40. Dear Lucy–she is so sweetly, charmingly cross-eyed. What a doll.

Your eyelet lace socks are really nice. That pattern is calling out to me!
