My current work in progress:

Seaforth designed by Alice Starmore, knit in British Breeds 5-ply Guernsey Wool on US 3 needles.

What Month is This?

Considering that the calendar says “October,” it is feeling awfully “August” to me. It is currently 88 degrees outside!

Such high temperatures in autumn turn my brain to mush, leaving me unable to think of anything to blog about.

“I’ll help, Momma! Didn’t you get something fun in the mail you can show them?”

Right! I can show you this heartbreakingly gorgeous handspun sock yarn I purchased from Sachi’s Purls:

Sachis Purls 100707

I can’t stop petting it!

“Focus, now! Didn’t you just finish a pair of socks?”

Why, yes, I did. Here they are:

“It’s hard work being my Momma’s keeper!”

  1. Wendy in Cambridge says:

Lucy, your contributions to your Momma’s blog are invaluable!
And please thank her for sharing the wonderful photos of you today.

  2. Lucy is too cute. and you can tell how hard she is focusing for her mommy by the simple fact that her eyes are starting to cross.

  3. Ooh! I love that sock yarn. Positively delicious. And with this heat, socks are really the only good thing to knit!

  4. What beautiful yarn from Sachi’s Purls and delightful On Hold socks. I will be blogging about my completed Asparagus Cable socks, they were so much fun to knit. I look forward to seeing what pattern you create for your new Sachi’s Purls yarn. I know Lucy and Ian will be taking good care of you after Stitches, please let me know if I can be of any help.

  5. Thank you, Lucy! What would we do without you?

  6. We know it’s a tough job Lucy. We’ll tell your Mom you deserve extra cat toys and treats! In the meantime, her new yarn and new socks are just gorgeous. I’m glad you remembered them!

  7. Now we know who will be managing the blog aftr the surgery. What would any of us do without Lucy? I love the color of the On Hold socks, and the Sachis Purls, mmmmmmm gotta get me some.

  8. I heard about your awful weather! You know it’s hotter where you are then it is here in Hawaii? That’s just wrong.

I adore those pictures of Lucy. Too sweet!

  9. Here in Northwest it’s a balmy 54 degrees. Lovely for both knitting and getting out in nature.
I finally scored one of your patterns from the Loopy Ewe! No mean feat from the hinterlands! Longtime lurker, first time poster.

  10. Lucy is SO helpful! It’s nice to see a pet helping out her human that way….

  11. oh, i completely understand about the weather. it’s 91 degrees here and I just bought a polarfleece jacket in hopes for some cold. supposedly it’s supposed to be our last warm week, but i’ll believe it when i see it. maybe it just means the summer of socks is not really over, even officially. ๐Ÿ™‚

  12. My goodness, Lucy, you DO work hard. I hope your Momma pets you more than she does that nice green yarn!

  13. Beautiful yarn and lovely socks. Hoping this pattern will be available at LE as well?

  14. Here, it seems that the weather has finally caught up to the date. We’ve had some lovely warm days this past week, and only today has it really turned chilly, like it’s finally and properly autumn. Almost scarf weather, too!

  15. thanks Lucy – be sure to keep her still and well pampered after her surgery too!
Love that yarn Sachi spun – she does a gorgeous job. I hear it’s harder to get than catching snow flakes.lucky you!
And you can feel free to send a bit of that heat wave out here – we’ve had early cold spells, with nights in the mid 40’s. burrr – it’s sock time!

  16. Good luck with your upcoming surgery. I will be eagerly awaiting you back as good as new.

It looks like Lucy is already in her caregiver mode. Felines are just the best at TLC.

  17. I love Lucy! (And it’s 88 degrees where I’m at, too!)

  18. Lucy is doing a good job as a Momma’s keeper.

It’s 87 degrees in Eau Claire, WI – two days in a row with record highs – and we’re sending it your way Wendy!

  19. Wendy, I hear ya on the temps – and the humidity! I’m visiting New England right now and had thought I’d get to experience a clear, crisp, cold autumn weekend – after all, it’s OCTOBER. HA! My hair is one ginormous frizz-ball, I’m tomato red and boiling hot, and the wool sweater I’m knitting has become one giant tangle that I don’t even want to work on. Bah. I’m holing up in the hotel room and putting the A/C on HIGH!

  20. Lucy, not only are you beautiful but you are Sooooooo smart. Great help to your mother and all that. Have you helped her pick out the new pattern for the beautiful yarn that came in the post?

Wendy, hope the surgery goes well!

We’ll (Archie Andrews & Veronica Lodge [cats}) be thinking of you. Even though after my back surgery, they were quite smothering and not too helpful.

  21. Lucy, your momma is SO unbelievaably lucky to have such a helpful, intelligent and beautiful kitty girl! We know that you’ll take very good care of her post-op and hope that you’ll have your daddy post updates for momma when she doesn’t feel up to do anything other than sleeping. We’ll all be worried a bit but know that she’ll have the very best of care with you in charge. You are Lucy – hear you roar! ๐Ÿ™‚

  22. Yummy yarn! Both the weather and the yarn look like summer!

  23. Lucy, you’re such a good girl to take care of Momma like this. Let her know that cooler weather is coming…we had 90’s yesterday and it never got to 70 today HOORAY!

  24. oh mighty, wise, and wonderful Lucy. Show us the error of our ways, and how to devote ourselves to your care!

  25. Wow! THREE Lucy shots in one post!
(yes, it is ridiculously hot for October…we were 89 at 6p.m)
    Where oh where is fall?

  26. Lovely! (That goes for the Sachi’s yarn, the great new socks, and especially for Lucy.)

Love the colour you chose for the On Hold socks (holding makes me blue -tee hee!). I’ve worked with ShiBui Knits sock yarn before and loved it – right now I’m knitting their Merino Kid up into a heavier shawl (DK weight, dense lace pattern of my own design), and the colour could not possibly be richer. Every time I pick it up I want eggplant!

Give Lucy a cuddle (from Peanut, Bean & Emo).

  27. NewJerseyLaura says:

Lovely new yarn! Lovely socks. Lovely cat. A day for cotton socks and lemonade ๐Ÿ™‚

  28. Heart-breakingly beautiful is right!

  29. Lucy is such a good helper! As we say at my house, “Helper Cat is Helping.” I think The Husband and I have seen too many LOLCats… Anyway. It’s a good thing you have the iron fist, er… Velvet Paw to keep you on the straight and narrow.

  30. I am positively DROOLING at that new sock yarn… I want some!

Lucy, you’re doing such a great job at keeping Momma focused! Though turning out socks like those… I’d say she’s pretty good at staying on task on her own!

  31. I’m with you on the heat–and what surprises me is that the TV weather forecasters act like this is a gift from the gods. I’m in real need of some true fall weather.

That sock yarn is beautiful, and I appreciate your links to sellers like these. I stumble on a fair number when I’m web surfing, but you always show yarn from vendors I haven’t yet seen.

Good luck with the surgery. I hope all goes well for you

  32. Good Job, Lucy! The yarn and socks are all beautiful.

  33. I’ve been reading your blog for a while now and love it ๐Ÿ™‚ I have a bit of a Lucy question – I’m looking into getting a ragdoll kittie myself (I love them) but was wondering if they’re okay on their own (I’ve heard they like to be kept in pairs sometimes)?

Thanks! (and say hello to Lucy for me!)

  34. I thought about you yesterday, Wendy, as I was suffering in the heat running the Army Ten-Miler. I enjoyed my time in Arlington and DC, but am truly ready for fall!

  35. Wendy- I get such happiness out of the fact that you get such happiness from a skein of yarn.

As for this weather- I feel totally ripped off and feel a major rant coming on-

    Cover your ears, Lucy.

  36. Good job Lucy, keep your Momma focused until Stitches. Remind her you deserve kitty treats for your hard work. And maybe a new colorful plastic ring to play with.

It was 90+ in Philly this weekend. Plus very humid. So humid my friend’s cat, who hates water, spent the weekend curled up in the cool metal sink.

  37. I’m so happy you like your new yarn. You know, sending it off in the mail feels like I’m sending a kid away to college. Don’t get so caught up petting the yarn that you forget to pet Lucy. Not that she’d let you forget…

  38. Lucy is a very good keeper.

I have Autumn here. You can have some if you want it, we’d be happy to give it away for a while.

  39. I know how your brain feels. I live in Baltimore and was in Salisbury yesterday for my son’s induction into the Communication Arts National Honor Society. Salisbury hit a record temperature of 91 degrees. On October 7th!! My body and brain are so confused that I am accomplishing nothing that I need to. And I am taking Friday off to be at Stitches, so I really need to acconplish something. My dog isn’t being helpful like Lucy is, either. He is not a fan of the heat and has been lying around like he just cannot wait for more seasonable weather.

  40. What lovely socks and sock yarn!
Lucky that Lucy is there to remind you ๐Ÿ™‚

  41. Perfect time for you to write in your Mom’s blog. On Saturday I mentioned what your Mom uses for a blocking board (you know the mats) & I said “Lucy uses” before correcting myself & saying “Wendy”:-).

Lucy make sure you get extra rest so you can take special care of your Mom … she’s counting on you more than ever.

  42. Wendy, how will we really recognize you and L-B? Like your height, hair color, what L-B looks like, etc.
