My current work in progress:

Seaforth designed by Alice Starmore, knit in British Breeds 5-ply Guernsey Wool on US 3 needles.

It Was a Dark and Stormy Evening

Last night I was all hunkered down, ready to watch two episodes of Good Eats on television, a rainstorm pounding against the windows, Lucy snuggled up next to me. Knitting in hand, of course.

And the power went out.

Fortunately, it came on about 90 minutes later and fortunately this happens very rarely where I live (a circuit blew at the nearest substation apparently).

So I went into the bedroom with my high-powered flashlight — smaller room, so easier to light — and sat up in bed to read a book by flashlight. Lucy, who was very upset by this sudden darkness and change of plans, joined me after a few minutes, and curled up on my legs.

When the power came back on, I saw she had brought a favorite toy with her and placed it on the bed next to her.

Say it with me: Awwwwwwwwww!

Today has been cloudy and grey and drizzling rain. A good day to stay inside and knit.

Here’s the sock I started yesterday:

Sock 102507

Sock 102507

It’s Louet Gems fingering in “Aqua.” The pattern is my own, based on traditional gansey patterning. It shows up very nicely in this light-colored yarn.

The rest of the day was spent in preparing for the KOARC birthday extravaganza, which will take place tomorrow evening. I’m planning a birthday cake for him that ‘s — well, it’s gonna be a surprise.

Lucy sez

“On days like today, a nap is the best idea!”

Tomorrow, Friday, is (blogless) L-B’s birthday. Happy Birthday, L-B!

  1. The new sock is looking very pretty. I really like the pattern. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Barbara-Kay says:

I feel a commonality with you, except that I did knit during the two episodes of Good Eats; no power failure here. Both featured cooking with eggs, and you don’t need THAT much cholesterol! VBG! Oh, and my “cats in residence” were Minky, the Chocolate Point Meezer, beside me, and Victoria, the Tortie Point Meezer, between my ankles.

  3. I think that possibly the worst time for the power to go out would be during episodes of Good Eats. This would make me very upset.

  4. Happy Birthday to the KOARC and to L-B! Many happy returns to both.

Poor Lucy, she needed her toy and you to feel okay again. Sweet kitty.

  5. Debra in NC says:

Happy birthday L-B! And yes, I “awwwwwwwwwwwwwed” at dear Lucy bringing her favorite toy to bed. That’s so cute of her. I really like that new sock pattern you’re working on, it shows up very nicely. We’re finally getting some rain too, but thankfully no power outages (yet!). LOL! That usually happens when I’ve got a really good book and am down to the final chapter.

  6. Good Eats is my all time favorite cooking show! Other than the power going out, your night sounds exactly like how I would like to spend a few more nights during the week…darn work for gettting in the way!!

  7. How weird–my power went out (AGAIN!) for awhile last night. I now have TWO battery-powered lanterns and with one on either side, I can now knit with the battery-powered radio going in the background. My cat Kleenex is a great bestower of gifts too. I often wake up in bed wondering why there’s a weird lump under my back–that would be the Tiger Tail toy. Or I feel this strange stick arrangement near my hand and it turns out that our interactive ‘snake’ toy has been strategically relocated where I can conveniently grab it and wave it around in the middle of the night (he hopes). ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Happy Birthday to L-B and wishing you a speedy recovery too Wendy.

  9. Awwwwwww. That’s sho shweet. I like that show, too. I’m going next month to the Fabulous Food Show in Cleveland to see him.

  10. Don’t you just love Good Eats and Alton? I get lots of good knitting done during that program.

  11. Happy Birthday, L-B! And thanks to everyone who left a greeting for me here or over at my blog ( )

  12. I have read lots of books by flash light!! Kinda like camping without the bugs! Love the newest sock. So glag you are feeling so much better.
    Happy Birthday L-B!!!

  13. Oh Wow. The KOARC and I have the same birthday! Yeah! Tell him happy birthday for me!

  14. Lurve the gansey sock! Very clever!

It just kills me that Lucy carries her toys around, like a puppy. She’s so doggone cute! (No pun intended!)

Happy birthday wishes to the KOARC and L-B! Do all your friends go by initials?

  15. Love the blue sock, pattern shows up so well. Glad that you are feeling better. Bummer, no electricity. Lucy seemed to be quite content. A big Happy Birthday to L.B. and congratulations on knitting for Clara, saw your name mentioned. A great book L.B.

  16. Now that is a gorgeous looking sock. I love textured socks.

  17. Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

  18. I love the new pattern! Very spiffy! And Lucy looks like she needs me to pet her.

  19. awwwwwwwwwwwwww!

  20. Awwwwww, Lucy!

Happy happy birthdays to L-B and KOARC.

And Wendy, I’m so happy that you’re up to blogging and celebrating.

  21. Wendy in Cambridge says:

Happy Birthday to L-B and to the KOARC. Today is my birthday as well, and I also love Halloween Peeps!

So glad you’re feeling better, Wendy. Take good care of yourself.

    Smooches to Lucy!

  22. Here’s another link for cakes that y’all might like… (and happy birthday L-B!!)

  23. Theresa in Italy says:

Happy Birthday to L-B and belated Happy Birthday to the KOARC (sorry about the timing; we’re six hours ahead of you).

They would fit right in with my family’s birthday schedule—my dad and my son also celebrated this week!

    Awwwww, Lucy!

  24. Happy Birthday to L-B! Rainy weather notwithstanding, I hope it’s a truly spectacular day for you. Enjoy!

  25. (with apologies to Lesley Gore)
It’s my birthday, I can wear my L-Bee socks if I want to……

    I’m glad it’s a cool, rainy day,so I can wear my special birthday socks! Thanks again,Wendy! ๐Ÿ™‚
And thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes! ๐Ÿ™‚
Happy Birthday to you, Wendy in Cambridge! ๐Ÿ™‚
I may be older than Wendy, but I’m younger than KOARC! ๐Ÿ™‚
And, thanks for the kitty birthday dance, Lucy! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  26. Michele in Maine says:

Wendy, your power story is so funny because I was sitting on my couch this morning, getting a little knitting with my tea before heading to work. I was struggling with your Healthy Spine socks (I’m not terribly experienced with toe-up, and have never worked with two circs before). As I was tinking back yet again, the power flickered, then went out. Of course it was day time so I could still knit, (and, more importantly, the cats were not inconvenienced), so I was able to do a couple more rows. Please tell me it will get easier with practice! I’m loving the yarn, tho – same as you used on yours, Nature’s Palette.

Enjoy the rainy day! It’s bright and sunny here on the coast!

  27. Wendy, your blog is just great but I have one burning question: what do you do with all those gorgeous socks you make? Gifts? Raffle contributions? United Way? Sales? Wear a new pair a day?

  28. I always come here for sock porn lol! Last night I was watching the Red Sox Game and Crocheting a hat, big challenge as I love the game. Glad to see you socks are coming back. You are always an inspiration.

  29. A very Happy Birthday to L-B and KOAR!!!

  30. I just scrolled through the entries that I missed (due to ugly work hours) and saw the DC sky! It occurred to me that this looks a lot like Rockville Pike? DS (the golden child) lives right across from Woolwinders, on King’s Farm Blvd., but had a condo further down for several years…the view is amazingly similar!

  31. Bon anniversaire L. B.!!!!!
Wendy, are you sure it’s not to early to go back to work on monday? I hope you have a good chair!
    Nice sock!

  32. I was prepared to hear that Lucy brought you a mouse! I did not know that cats carried their toys around with them like dogs do! Hope your book was good!

  33. Oh, isn’t Alton the best???
    I love that show..
Oh, and tell L-B happy birthday!!! she is such a sweet person.

  34. alice in n. holsworthy, devon says:

I had to write at least one comment from the UK where I have been having cream teas and looking at mostly sunny days and cows and narrow hedged lanes for the better part of the week. It has been fabulous and your new haircut looks grand with that big smile!

    A (LOL)

  35. alice in n. holsworthy, devon, uk says:

Sorry, I forgot! Cheers L-B, your twin works in the shop here!

  36. That sleeping kitty face is my newest fav Lucy pic for sure. I’m glad you are healing well.

  37. Belated Happy Birthday to both L-B and KOARC!

I really like the look of that gansey-sock. I hope it’s a pattern you decide to make available!
