Sock Quiz

We’re having the first really cold day of this winter, with wind chill temperatures that bring it down to feel even colder. It’s a good day to stay inside and snuggle with a Ragdoll.

Yesterday I took some time out from glove knitting and completed a sock.

This is knit from Tempted Yarns in the “Roxanne” colorway. Yarn purchased from The Loopy Ewe. It is knit, as usual, on a 2mm (US 0) needle. But the construction of this sock is completely different from my usual modus operandi.

Here’s the toe:

Can you guess how I knit this sock?

I f you think you know, send me an email to the Official WendyKnits Contest email address: blogcontestATcomcastDOTnet before 4:00pm Eastern time on Tuesday January 22, 2008.

In the email, tell me exactly how I knit all the elements of this sock. The person who comes closest will win. If more than one person gives the right answers, I’ll have the random number generator draw a name.

1. One email per person.

2. Only entries emailed to the Official WendyKnits Blog Contest email address, above, will be counted. Entries in the comments will be ignored.

3. As usual, anyone on Planet Earth with a mailing address where I can send a package is eligible to enter.

Oh, what does the person who gets it right win? This:

Wollmeise 012008

Wollmeise 012008

This is a skein of Wollmeise sock yarn, in the Raku-Regenbogen colorway. If you very cleverly figure out how I worked my sock, it can be yours!

  1. Thank you for a fun challenge on this chilly winter day! I will be sure to examine your sock closely and see what I can come up with. I really like the colors. Of course, I look forward to seeing more of your gloves.

  2. anne marie in philly says:

the current temperature here is 21 degrees at 4p. factor in the wind chill, and brrrrrrrr….

steven and meredith say “everyday is a good day to snuggle with a kitty!”

  3. I agree, it is quite cold out in Alexandria, VA today! I found that out when I stepped outdoors to meet my friend for lunch. I really need to be going for a walk to get some exercise, but decided I’d rather stay in and knit! What a great contest! Not planning to enter a guess, but what a fun idea! : )

  4. Wendy in Cambridge says:

    What a great snuggling photo!

Oh, and the sock is lovely, too.

  5. Yes, on cold days snuggling with furry friends is the best. Also, I actually love days like we had today in Boston for nice long walks. Fortunately, Mirabel my cocker spaniel walking partner agrees. We bundled up & walked for a good hour. Some great podcasts helped to keep me motivated. Do you ever listen to “This American Life”?

Your contest sounds like fun. I’m not going to enter, but as always I enjoy looking at your creations.

  6. Even for a blog contest I don’t think you’d go cuff down. But I’d love to see it. (Even though I rarely do either.)

  7. Toe up with afterthought heel?!

  8. Great sock. I absolutely love Tempted yarn!

  9. I may have to try Tempted yarn — its fabulous!! Got some kitty warmth here in Pittsburgh too. Could be worse! We could be braving the cold to see the NFC playoff game. Brr!! I’m going to cuddle with my kitties and sock-in-progress myself.

That Wollmeise is the color I was hoping to find in my Loopy basket this week. Not so sure that I’m an astute detector, but it sure is worth a try. Thank you again for your kindness and generosity in contest prizes!!

    Stay warm….

  10. Could this be a hybrid, part toe-up, part cuff-down, with a heel-stitch heel flap and a short row heel?

  11. My guess is toe-up using a heel like the one on your frogwarts pattern and the EZ sewn bind-off. But if I’m right, I don’t want to take Wollmeise from someone else who might not have gotten to try it yet. I have a pretty good stash of it already.

  12. I have no clue as to how you did it. However, I do have a sock related question. I’ve been using your toe-down patterns for socks for myself but now I have been requested to make a pair of man-sized socks for my son’s rather large feet. (11″!) Anyhow, I want to use the same method but have no clue how to re-size your basic pattern. Is there any chance you have the basic sock dimensions for a sock that is 72 stitches around after the increases at the toe? PUHLEESE??

  13. Wollmeise! Yum yum! I’m in!

    ps. cute kitty

  14. Liz in IN says:

Oh, what an especially lovely picture of Lucy!

The sock is beautiful, too, but I have no guess except for the easy/obvious bits. However, if I had a guess, I would not post it here, but at the designated contest site. Ahh, reading comprehension…it’s a dying art. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Stay warm!

  15. Snuggly kitties always relax me. Lucy always knows the right thing to do.

  16. And when ya have a Ragdoll, you really don’t get much choice with the snuggling.. it’s pretty much a demand, isn’t it? ::laughing::

  17. I noticed the reading comprehension problem too #15 Liz. I entered at the e-mail myself. Anyways Today, this last weekend, and for several more days will be good kitty nugglin days ๐Ÿ™‚ Just wish mine were better at nuggling at times other than human bedtime LOL! Guess I could turn the heat down and put on my soft fuzzy fleece outfit then would have a lapful for sure! Lucy’s Blue eyes are absolutely beautiful!

  18. Hi, Wendy. I sent in my best guess pattern. BTW, this is a pretty tricky way to get someone else to write up your pattern for you! ๐Ÿ˜‰ My money is NOT on a hybrid approach…

  19. What an adorable pic of Madonna & KittyChild! Kudos to the photog!

  20. It is so cold out here too! It looks deceivingly nice out, blue sky even..but then you notice the trees blowing around. We were going to go hiking today but it is just a good day to stay inside and be bums! Even stayed in bed late with a good book, about ready to pick up my needles…2nd zig zag sock.

  21. Angel Leah says:

Are the patterns for the socks and gloves posted? I would love to have them. Also, what is that wooden thing in the socks? Thanks you guys ! ๐Ÿ™‚
