My current work in progress:

Seaforth designed by Alice Starmore, knit in British Breeds 5-ply Guernsey Wool on US 3 needles.

Oh, Baby!

Thank you so much for all your lovely comments on my Shetland Triangle Shawl. It’s really a very simple pattern — a good first “big” lace project for a lace newbie, in fact. What makes mine so gorgeous is the yarn.

As I said, I used handspun wool from Zarzuela’s Fibers. Jessica had dyed some roving inspired by photos I take of the Washington DC sunrise every day. When I saw the roving, I asked her for a custom spinning job on it because I simply can’t spin any more. Unfortunately it aggravates my back problems.

So Jessica spun up her hand-dyed roving for me and I think anyone who looks at my finished shawl will agree that she did a spectacular job of this yarn from start to finish. Jessica updated her shop today, and she’s got a lovely new colorway called Stormy Dawn, along with many other gorgeous colorways, including the one used for my shawl, DC Sunrise. If you don’t spin, you can contact her about doing a custom job for you.

I’ve been giving my hands a rest after knitting the shawl, but I did whip up a pair of socks.

These are baby socks, knit from some leftover sock yarn. The pattern is a top-down, no-pick-up gusset sock with a star toe. Very easy to execute. You can find the pattern in the Fall 2008 issue of Knit Simple magazine (the current issue) and it’s my design. There’s a matching pattern for adult-sized socks as well.

The baby socks take no time at all to knit. Here’s a photo to show you the actual size.

Lucy included for scale.

So I’m on to something else, using this yarn.

Can you guess what it is going to be? Here’s a hint:

Oh, one last thing:

Kitty lips!

  35. Hi Wendy

I must admit the first thought was baby surprise. Then I see that others agree. What beautiful yarn! All tho NZ is the land of wool I think most of it must be shipped overseas as we don’t have alot of such beautiful yarn here altho it is starting to become available at a price that is! $40 + for a ball of Noro sock yarn! Yikes!

    Cheers, knit on >^..^<

  36. I’m definitely going with Baby Surprise. I’ve made 3 of them from Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sport (on US 3s), and I have decided it is the PERFECT yarn for BSJs.

  37. Might that be Collage?

  48. I LOVE kitty lips!!! The new yarn project looks to be gorgeous as usual!! Have a great week. It is very muggy her in KY

  49. Well, with all that garter stitch, it looks like EZ or something inspired by EZ – like the FLS. I’m pretty sure (without enlarging the yarn shot either) that the yarn is LL in Georgetown, which is a VERY pretty color.
    Yeah for LL’s!

  50. Love the baby socks. I’m going to have to keep an eye out for my copy of the magazine. Lucy looks thrilled to be modeling such a novel item.

  51. As a fellow back sufferer, I can relate to the pain you suffer when trying to spin. However, have you given any thought to an electric spinner? You can sit in whichever position is most comfortable and since it doesn’t involve using your legs or lower back muscles, it’s much easier on the body.
    Just a thought…
The Six Pack + 1 send purrs and headbonks Lucy’s way!

  54. Hey Wendy:

What lovely knits! Just wanted to tell you I whipped up your famous mac and cheese for dinner last night. It was yummy!

    Thanks for sharing –

  55. Let’s see…a closeup of the picture indicates 200 yds per skein on the Lorna’s. The BSJ is a yarn hog, so I’ll bet that’s what you’re making. Unless of course there are more skeins and you’re holding out on us? I just finished one in Miss Babs Yummy Handpainted. I just need to seam it and add the buttons. Then I’ll put some finished pics on Ravelry.

Love the shawl! It’s so pretty how the color bands worked out.

  56. Ruth in Houston says:

  57. That new yarn is some pretty, pretty, pretty stuff.

I love the hues. No clue as to what you are making now, but it will be fun to see.

Best to you and the Lucy girl.

  61. Kitty Lips!
I’m late, but Shetland Triangle is gorgeous! And I’m going to second the Baby Surprise Jacket. Isn’t garter so pretty in it’s simplicity?

What colorway is that? I have a sock yarn budget that would love some of that!

  63. I love the wee socks. The photo of Lucy with them made me think how cute it would be if cats would wear socks. I know, it’s a strange thought but I own (or am owned by) the smallest, thinnest cat who has the coldest feet through the months of October until May.
Your new project is pictured on a keyboard so is it something for a laptop or for use while using a computer? It is very pretty yarn.

  64. There’s just something about Kitty Lips!! So soft, so fuzzy.

  66. Loved the Shetland Triangle Shawl, and the dear little baby socks. Is that Crystal Palace Panda Cotton Fern, perchance? I’m finishing a pair for myself (although my daughter is dropping hints that they match her eyes). Your first pair in Fern turned me onto Panda Cotton, thanks!
