My current work in progress:

Seaforth designed by Alice Starmore, knit in British Breeds 5-ply Guernsey Wool on US 3 needles.

We had a cold front come through last night. Yay! Yay! Yay!

Yesterday we had temperatures into the 70s and the temperature in my condo shot up to 78 degrees. So not cool. Today the high is supposed to be around 50 degrees with gusty winds. You know what that means . . .

Ahhhh . . . and it us supposed to get cold this week.

I finished the first half of the Midnight Lace Stole — see?

I’m working on the second half, though slowly. I seem to have hyper-extended a thumb somehow, so I’m taking it easy on the knitting right now. But I’m still loving this project. The pattern, while it looks complicated, is actually pretty easy to knit, and easy to memorize. And the Sea Silk is wonderful to knit. It’s so soft and drapey, with a gorgeous sheen. Yum.

Holiday Shopping

Should I tell you that I have most of my holiday shopping done already? This year I made an effort to shop handmade — made a bunch of purchases from Etsy shops. And speaking of Etsy, check out TinkerandPo. Lisa of TinkerandPo makes geeky stitch markers, and other things like fingerless gloves from repurposed wool sweaters.

From now until the end of the year TinkerAndPo is donating 10% of all sales to Autism Speaks. Lisa is the mother of an autistic son, so she think it’s an important issue and also thinks it’s important for independent artists, designers and crafters to become involved in those issues that affect the health and well-being of the communities they create in. We are all interconnected, especially in the current economic and social climate, and as we’ve proven on many occasions, we are powerful in our numbers.

I couldn’t agree with you more, Lisa.

As long as I have my Cozy Cushions, I think I’ll be okay this winter!

  1. I really enjoy reading your blog and i was hoping that you would make a suggestion on what a good sweater would be for a newer knitter. I’ve been knitting for about a year and i’ve mastered socks and made a blanket but i’m interested in making a sweater. Any suggestions on books or websites where i could find good pattern?

  2. Hi Wendy! I’m done with my Christmas shopping, too. I have one knitting project left and then it all gets wrapped and shipped. Such a feeling of accomplishment!

For Huntley…my first sweater project was from Knitting Pure and Simple, the top down roll neck sweater. You learn a lot of great skills but no seaming! And, it uses a heavy worsted, so it knits up in a flash.

  3. Same crazy weather here in Boston. I can hardly wait for the cold weather to come.

  4. We were just talking about making sure we buy all our gifts “Made in the USA”. we are actually looking in Etsy fro some of our gifts We need more people supporting individual artists. Nice to know you are doing this too.

  5. Ha! We had snow today. How cool is that?

The shawl looks lovely. What a lot of progress you´ve made with no goats to distract you!

  6. It could be worse. Your temperature could be in the high 70’s and your state could be on fire.

  7. I know! I actually ran my a/c for a little while yesterday. And the humidity! In November. Killer. But now, ahhhhh. Refreshing cool air. Love it. My cats aren’t too happy but hey they have all that lovely fur to keep them warm, right?

  8. Don’t you love the way that cats’ coats get all rumply when the owners are cold? It does seem odd that Lucy gets cold when your condo is at 70 degrees, but I suppose it’s because she has adjusted her internal temperature to handle even higher temperatures during the summer months.

  9. There’s something wrong with your TinkerAndPo link, but one that works is www dot tinkerandpo dot etsy dot com. Feel free to delete this comment once you’ve fixed the link! I only mention it because individual shops can be hard to locate on Etsy.

  10. Link fixed! Thanks for the heads up, Lynne!

  12. Autism Speaks is a great organization! They hold an annual fund-raising gala in NYC, in which our restaurant group participates; my boss’ son has Asperger’s Syndrome.

The Midnight Stole is looking lovely. I can’t wait to knit this.

  13. I’m glad for the cool too. I’m going to make hot chocolate right now.

  14. Ah, Wendy, I feel your pain. My mom and sister were visiting this weekend and I had to keep my apartment at 75 degrees. It was misery all around–they were too cold and I was too warm. I thought about you and Lucy.

  16. Wendy, thank you SO much for mentioning the shop and Autism Speaks in your blog! You’re just full of AWESOME!

I know I’ll have a big, fat check for Autism Speaks on January 1st!

    Thank you again!

  19. Ah, Wendy, maker of stoles… you are doing beautifully! Looks great from here, although I know it must be even better from where you are..

  20. Congrats on the holiday shopping. I am about halfway done with my shopping. I also think it’s wonderful for crafters to get involved in the community issues they feel strongly about. 🙂

  21. Well, I’ve *thought* about my holiday shopping… 😉 And I’m with Lucy — I’m cold! I put the electric blanket on my bed today, and if I could figure out a good way to drag it into the living room with me, I would.

Thanks for reminding me to get going with the holiday shopping and for the Etsy tip! I had planned to do as much shopping as possible on Etsy anyway, but I’m always grateful for recommendations since, as another reader pointed out, individual shops can be hard to find.

  23. I’ve got most of my shopping done, too, and thanks to some of my Ravelry friends, have ideas on what to get the five remaining people. *Phew!*
(And the weather report last night kept saying “snow, snow could happen!” – and it’s blue-sky sunny over the Potomac right now. Maybe snow tonight?)

  24. I could use a bit of a cold snap here! While it isn’t as warm in our condo as it is in yours, it is still pretty toasty and it would be nice to not be alternatively overheating each night.

(Though I’ll admit that in a month or so I will be cold all the time, so I shouldn’t kibbitz about it now.)

I hope Lisa (TinkerAndPo) doesn’t have any big plans for the next few weeks, because I suspect she will be spending all her free time making stitch markers! LOL Thanks for letting us know about her, Wendy.

P.S. Midnight Lace Stole is looking lovely.

  26. i have also found that it’s been unseasonably warm recently, but i’m not really looking forward to the cold winter ahead of us! i hope you won’t be complaining about the cold once it hits us 😉

  27. Lovely shawl. Please send some of that delightful coolness to SoCal – we are sweltering! Stay warm Lucy! luv.m.
