My current work in progress:

Seaforth designed by Alice Starmore, knit in British Breeds 5-ply Guernsey Wool on US 3 needles.

It is the first day of several chilly days here in the D.C. area, so I thought I’d wear my brand new shearling coat — a birthday gift from me to me. πŸ™‚

As is my wont, I pulled the coat out of the closet this morning and draped it over a chair while I finished getting ready for work. Five minutes later when I returned to put my coat on . . . well, you can probably guess what I saw.

Lucy very kindly consented to re-enacting the scene when I got home this afternoon.

It was pointed out to me that removing Lucy and putting on the coat was heartless on my part. So of course I have ordered a sheepskin pelt for Miss Lucy. I ordered a black one because I thought the contrast with her fur looked so pretty.

Because I’m planning on taking my yummy warm coat with me to Minneapolis next week, I’m hoping Lucy’s sheepskin arrives before that!

It’s been a crazy-busy week so far and I’ve not done much work on the Hanging Garden Stole, but here is a pic of it anyway. Just because.

Great pic, huh? πŸ˜‰

  1. the great thing about living in Minnesota, lots of opportunities to wear warm, wooly knitting!

  2. Great pic! Lucy sez “Love you Mom!” πŸ˜‰ A wink w/a smile! luv.m.

  3. Bring lots of other warm wool items. I’m 2 hours south of “the cities” and it’s -8 here today with a WC of -33.

  4. Lucy…….spoiled???? Nah, not much! (Oh heck, where’s my Plurk grinning smiley??)

  5. Ooh, that looks incredibly cozy! And wasn’t it sweet of Lucy to warm up your coat for you before you had to put it on? πŸ™‚

  6. So who is watching Lucy while you are gone?

  7. Hi Wendy,

Can you share your wisdom with a fellow Hanging Garden Stole knitter? I just finished mine and it’s a lovely combination of zephyr in cinnabar with smoky topaz beads on the ends. Just one problem – my bindoff is far too tight and I don’t know how to fix it. I can take it out, being a very patient soul, but I only know one way to bind off and it isn’t stretchy enough even though I used larger needles. After all that knitting (I’m far slower than you are) I want to use my beautiful stole. Can you help me save it? How should I bind off???

Many thanks for any advice you can offer…

  8. Love your shearling coat…and Happy Belated Birthday! I am just catching up on some blogs and saw that I missed it. Mine was Saturday and my husband tricked me into helping get things ready for company at our house (because he knew I’d figure it out if he did it all by himself) because my parents came to Baltimore from Florida and my sister and niece came from Denver to surprise me! And then he threw a really nice surprise party elsewhere because he thought my 50th needed to be honored. I still can’t believe it.

  9. So, is your heat on? Brrrrr!!

  10. I heard, in ICHC speak, “I HAZ A COZY” when I saw that picture!!
    Stay warm!

And record heat here in CA; 87 degrees yesterday. We need some rain!

  13. Lucy will love the sheepskin. It will help keep her warm. My Maggie Moo kneads it forever before she settles down on it.

  14. Oh yeah, the stole looks fantastic, arranged like that. πŸ˜€

  15. Lucy will look wonderfully beautiful on her new blankie. And perhaps she’ll stop asking you to turn on the heat.

  16. Lucy is a prize. You must have my saying, I have it down pat. Never leave home without cat fur. Stay warm.

  17. I wish you luck getting the coat tomorrow morning. She knows what to expect now.

  18. Don’t forget your wool socks, hat, muffler and mittens–my brother in Mpls said the wind chill forecast for tomorrow is in the -40F neighborhood. Ah, I do miss Minnesota!

  19. Nosey Kat says:

    Hey Lucy,
It’s me Nosey. So you’re getting your own sheepskin. Ump. Well , I have mittens! Oh and a scarf. I also have staff. You know… dogs have masters, cats have staff. You might want to check into that.

  20. Lucy does look very pretty against the shearling. I hope hers arrives soon. Our neighbor’s cat, who used to visit, absolutely loved my faux mink throw from fabulous furs. I’m sure they would have a color that Lucy would like. πŸ˜‰

  21. Lucy knows what is comfy! I think she is hinting about the “heater situarion” My two keep stealing my heating pad I sit on for extra warmth. I think I need to get them a heated bed!! Have a great trip to Minneapolis!!

  22. awwwww, so cute. it is a great picture. it makes me want a fuzzy something.

  23. I was also wondering if your heat was on yet!?! Good thing you are going to Minneapolis this week. I live 1.5 hours due east of Minneapolis in Wisconsin and we are expecting possibly -45 wind chill factor for the next 50 hours!!! brrrr…..a warming trend is expected over the weekend and we might reach 30 degrees.

  24. meant to say are NOT going to Minneapolis this week!!!

  25. The stole is so pretty, even in it’s rather lumpy pictured state!

And now my cats want a sheepskin. I should never let them read your blog! πŸ˜‰

Nice gift, the gift of warmth, you will need it in Minneapolis. Here in Montreal we will have a high of -13F tomorrow with wind chills of -30. In anticipation of the Arctic cold I knit myself a cashmere balaclava, very cosy indeed. Lucy looks ravishing on black shearling. My fur child, Grand Duke Arthur the Carnivorous, a Russian Blue kitty, has his own cashmere sweater to enjoy naps on, I got tired of having to remove him from my own. The little darlinks!

  28. The temp is now -17 F, windchill -36F, next week we are supposed to have a heat wave – +35F on Monday!! It is so cold that it is hard to breathe outside, only my dog likes to be out in it (he’s part Newfoundland). At least I have warm, wool socks and sweaters to wear!

  29. Lucy looks so cute! That’s great she’ll soon have her very own sheepskin!

  30. hey lucy-loo! *waves*
that stole gets more lovely every time I see it! You are making me fall in love with that yarn.
She’s lucky to be getting such a nice bed! Ah, the life of a cat!

  31. Checked the weather for Minneapolis and you better pack extra long warm underwear and several sweaters. I do not think you will have to worry about being too warm!!

  32. I can only afford the ‘fake’ shearling type of coat. I knit with wool, but would love a real shearling coat! If it keeps the sheep warm, just think what it would do for me.

  33. i must show this to the hubbler. I bought my cat a sheepskin rub and she loves it. The hubbler muttered something about spoiling the cat, but you can’t put a price on a happy cat. have a nice trip !

  34. My dog has an old sheepskin that he sleeps on. It keeps him so warm! At first he used to bite it a bit but now he just snuggles into it. Lucky Lucy!

  35. I do not get it… Cats are supposed to have predatory instincts, which usually includes blending into their surroundings, but light colored cats ALWAYS go for the black clothes! Even those cats that are not white seem to miraculously shed white fur in the vicinity of dark materials.

Still curious about the mystery project. Perhaps a Bohus Sweater for next week? Hmmmm….

  39. Lucy, you sneaky girl! Getting your mama to order you your very own sheepskin!

  40. I certainly hope that Lucy appreciates you as much as you appreciate her.
And I do think the black pelt is a great choice.

  41. I used to have a little lambswool duster and if I set it down it invariably disappeared and I’d find my cat Marbles carrying it around. My sister’s cat does the same with her felted clogs. My greyhound had a wool yarn fetish when she was in her ‘teenage’ years. Lucy is one lucky Princess!

  42. I am an avid lurker, too! I missed the competition though, drat :o)

I have a knitting-chum too, called Howard: he is not so good at knitting (no opposable thumb) but he has a real knack for frogging :b

  45. Nothing quite like the kitty prerogative to sleep wherever you expect them not to do so. πŸ˜‰ She’s very cute!

I hope you survive inauguration day. Sounds like chaos. Staying in sounds very wise indeed.

As for Minneapolis, may I suggest the 100% silk long john’s from LLBean? I am wearing mine today and they are quite light, comfortable and toasty. πŸ™‚

  46. Ikea sells small sheepskins (white only & plenty big enough for our almost 20 lb cats) – can’t remember how much but pretty cheap – maybe $20. Our cats LOVE theirs.

  47. That made me laugh! Lucy so didn’t want you to go. My kitties try to block my path down the stairs, which is slightly dangerous.

Lucy will look beautiful on her new rug.

  48. Black really does set off Lucy’s coloring beautifully. I hope you stay warm in MN! Hopefully you will miss the worst of the cold!
