My current work in progress:

Seaforth designed by Alice Starmore, knit in British Breeds 5-ply Guernsey Wool on US 3 needles.

Judging from the number of comments, It seems as though you like Johanne’s patterns. ๐Ÿ˜‰

If you’ve been order to The Loopy Ewe today, you’ll know that her patterns are almost completely sold out. No worries — I know the North America distributor, and they’ll be back in stock soon. By the way, if you click on the “0” at the bottom of the “Born to Knit” category, it’ll take you to the page with her sold out patterns, so you can see that the pattern for the Signe hat is there as well.

Remember, you have til tomorrow at 4pm EST to leave a comment on yesterday’s post to be entered in the drawing.

Here’s my Mini Mochi sock again, in close-up.

I didn’t want to knit just a plain sock because I was afraid I’d get bored with all that stockinette, so I worked up a very simple lace pattern. I think the vertical pattern looks nice against the wide horizontal stripes. I’m calling the pattern “Waterfall” and I’ll be offering it as a freebie as soon as I’m finished knitting it. I think it will work nicely with a lot of different handpainted yarns.

I’ve not made a whole lot of progress on the sock because I’ve been playing with this.

Sing it with me:

“Oh, the yarn on the swift goes round and round!”

Lucy is ignoring me and working on being fluffy.

  1. Love the swift picture. And the new sock. And Lucy, of course! ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. I _love_ that waterfall pattern, and I just finished logging in my autumn Mini Mochi to my database. I’ll just be an eager beaver anticipating the pattern (Thank you in advance). And aren’t those Swedish Institute folks nice? I ordered (on line) all of the knitting books, a hat/scarf kit, and some odds and ends and postcards, and a very nice lady phoned me today to say that one of the postcards (for all of $1.50) was out of stock and would I like something else, or just my order. Wow, cheerful personal service. And that accent made me a bit homesick. If I can get a chance I’d love to make a road trip up there with some friends (and a warm plate of cookies for them!).

  5. The new sock looks lovely! I remember when I got my swift… many balls were would that day. I was waaay too easily amused at the perfect little cakes it made.

  6. Lucy ignores the swift?! Lucky you! My cats love the swift, and if there’s yarn on it, so much the better. But they’re perfectly happy to gnaw on the empty swift, if I’m careless enough to leave it unattended for a moment. ๐Ÿ™‚ (Fortunately it folds up nicely and lives in a box most of the time.)

  7. Oh, and the waterfall sock is beautiful! Meant to say that, but was to quick to hit that “submit” button…

  8. Thanks for offering a free sock pattern! It’s really pretty. I’m guessing the yarn on the swift going round and round is that Wollmeise lace? I am so jealous…

  9. Aren’t swifts fun? ๐Ÿ˜€

  10. Yarn swifts are so much fun. My little brother calls mine my ‘blue spinning wheel’ and always wants to watch when I’m using it.

  20. I really like that Waterfall pattern. I think I have just the yarn in my stash to use when you post it too!

  21. I love the sock. Waterfall is the perfect name for it.

  22. My miniture dachshund barks at the swift as it goes round and round. :>)

  23. Kate (the enabler) says:

Wendy – your sock is coming along gorgeously ๐Ÿ™‚
Thanks also for directing us to Johanne’s patterns and blog – I’m blown away. She indicated that she could use some help translating the dragon sweater pattern….she hinted, I think, that you’d be awesome help in that arena. Wendy – we MUST have that pattern…… ๐Ÿ™‚

  24. anne marie in philly says:

how about the wheels on the bus? ๐Ÿ˜‰

I share my swift with my neighbor gina, who has the ball winder. her cats ignore us too.

steven and meredith say: “cousin lucy, you are looking exceptionally fluffy today! did momma brush you?”

  25. Lucy gets an A in Being Fluffy, just as she gets an A in Being Pretty and in Being Snuggly. How is she at calculus? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  26. The sock is lovely and how nice of you to give us the pattern. A perfect name. My cats love it when I have my swift out, winding with one hand and shooing cats away with the other.

  27. Love the Waterfall socks – they look very warm and fuzzy!
I’m surprised that you didn’t own a swift already. Or maybe this is your second? I treated myself to a table top swift last year from Knitting Knotions. Love it!

  28. Oh, duh, I feel like an idiot – I should have remembered TLE’s out-of-stock button. Love, love, love the Signe hat and gloves. (Adding to my wishlist now.) I haven’t done stranded work for years, but those look like perfect projects to get back into it.

The socks look very warm and fuzzy (like Lucy!), but the fluffiness doesn’t overpower your lovely design. Did you have any problems with knots in the skein?

  29. Lucy sure is looking fluffy today. I like the Waterfalls pattern, simple yet fancy.

Aunt Kathys last blog post..Monday- Bare Foot In the Park? Ice don’t think so.

  30. Lucy’s fluffiness and your yarn spinning reminded me that last night while I was winding up a ball of yarn the static just flared out and you could hear my hair crackle with it when I moved my head toward the yarn. Nothing like the dry heat of winter.

  31. Yarny cake yarny cake knitter’s man
Knit from a cake as fast as you can!
Purl it and knit it and mark it with an FO,
Put it in the oven for my needles and me!

I am really liking the socks – The lace pattern is just enough interest without being lost in the halo. Love!

  33. Lucy ignores it? It’s a cat toy, surely.

I bought myself a ball winder and wound everything windable in the house. It’s fascinating to watch. Some day a swift.

  34. Hi ๐Ÿ™‚ I have during the past month read through your blog (every single post :)) and LOVE it. You knit well (of course), I love all the pictures of Lucy and I also love your designs. After reading your blog we got two cats (mother and daughter) because Lucy is SO cute (alas, mine are cuter, of course :)) The reason to leave a comment now is the fact that I suddenly had the brilliant idea of using your short-row-toe-up-sock idea for mittens ๐Ÿ™‚ I know the short-row as a consept is not yours, but only after laying my hands on your generic sock pattern did I feel like trying it so I give you all the credit ๐Ÿ™‚ Please visit my blog to check out the gloves that you inspired ๐Ÿ™‚

  35. I do love that sock. I think I must buy myself some of the yarn…

  38. Thanks a lot, Wendy! I can’t get ‘the yarn on the swift goes round and round, round and round, round and round, the yarn on the swift goes round and round, …” out of my head…but even more annoying is, what next? “on the kitchen table” just doesn’t rhyme

  39. How exciting that you’re going to offer the sock pattern for free. I love that word and can’t wait to be able to print out the pattern to make. I’m still “new” to knitting having taught myself last summer to knit socks and I love it. I also enjoy your blog…thanks so much.

  40. i enjoy your blog and love your cat. Wouldn’t you love to know what she does while you are at work??

  43. Michele In Maine says:

    Lucy looks very regal today.

  44. Lucy is pretty darn good at being fluffy!

I daydream sometimes about getting a swift. Mostly, I just deal with the little balls or wind by hand. I used to use the mini M&M tubes as nostepinnes, but I got lazy. It was just faster for me to do a normal wind by hand instead of centerpull.

  45. Waterfall is beautiful. I can’t wait till it goes up. I love the horizontal/vertical effect with it, as well. Ooh, a swift. I wish I had one. Looks like a lot of fun. Plus I’ve got about 20 hanks just laying around. Well, continue your fun.

  46. I swear you have to be one of the most generous bloggers out there! Mini Mocki looks beautiful!

Oh Lucy. So darn pretty and fluffy! If beautiful were a job, you’d be the C.E.O.!!! >^_^<

  47. Wendy, I never thought I’d be hooked on any blog, but have to read yours daily. Thanks for showing photos of your work and for turning us on to other blogs and sites!
