Sprucey Lucy It Is

I can see from the voting that Sprucey Lucy is the clear winner for the name of my new sock design. And in celebration, I finished the first Sprucey Lucy sock on the train this afternoon.

Knitting on the second sock will commence soon.

Yesterday was a busy one! I was insanely busy working on a stealth project on a tight deadline, along with a few hours of badly needed housecleaning. I did take time out for lunch, though:

In the interests of full disclosure, I bit the ears off my bunny (the other one is the KOARC’s bunny) Saturday night. Okay, I bit my bunny’s whole head off as well, right after taking the second photo. I ate the rest of him for lunch on Sunday. Nom.

Knit Purses!

I have in my hot little hands a copy of this book:

One Ball Knits: Purses, by Fatema, Khadija, and Hajera Habibur-Rahman.

This book has patterns for 20 handbags, each of which requires one ball or skein of yarn.

There is a great “Basics” section that discusses yarn weights and types, tools, and step-by-step illustrated instructions for stitches and techniques. Check out a sample page:

The purses are divided by seasons. Here’s my fave from each season.

Aren’t they cute?

Would you like my copy? Leave a comment to this post telling me so by Thursday, April 16, 2009, 4:00pm EDT and the Random Number generator will select a winner.

Don’t know how to comment? If you are looking at the page and see something that looks like this after the post:

Click on the “x Responses” and it will open the post in its own page — scroll down to the bottom of the page until you find the “Leave a Reply” form and fill that out, then click on the “Submit” button. That’s all there is to it!

Yeah, easy for you people with opposable thumbs!

  1. Love the sock and would love to knit the spring pocketbook you showed. It looks like a fun knit. No chocolate bunnies left here either….

  2. I have a pin on my knitting bag with a chocolate bunny who has a bite out of his ear. The caption reads, “This kind of senseless violence must be stopped!” ๐Ÿ™‚

  18. You don’t need to enter me for the book…I don’t think I’m a knitted purses kind of person.

But I am a sock person and I just had to tell you that I snarfled your book at the Barnes and Noble this afternoon (though I think the official release date is tomorrow, isn’t it?) and there are some gorgeous socks there. As well as lots of useful information. Great job! My needles are itching to try these patterns.

  28. I have an afghan book by the same authors of your purse book. It’s gorgeous, so I can imagine how nice those bags must be. I’d love to get on the list for the book.

Great sock! I would have said “Blue Spruce Socks” but I didn’t make it to the comments until you had already put up the choices. I voted for “Sprucey Lucy” of course. I’ll look out for that pattern. I have some bluish-green yarn that would be great in that pattern.

  29. I would love to win a copy of the book – I love to knit bags!

  30. Susan B. says:

boy, this books would help get the yarn stash down to manageable size LOL!! Sure could use help with that!

  32. What a great book! And I have lots and lots of single balls of yarn that I could devote to cute little bags. Please?

I voted for Catnip Socks, but that was only in an effort to appease Lucy. Clearly, that effort failed. ๐Ÿ™‚

I also am looking forward to your book, which is on its way to me according to Amazon. I love “one-skein” books, and would like to add this one – especially for the spring green clutch.

  76. The book looks wonderful! Yes, I’d love your copy (and will try not to feel guilty that you don’t have it in your hot little hands anymore).

“Sprucey Lucy” works as a name for the sock… but I bet Lucy wouldn’t be any more cooperative in modeling it than my cats are in modeling any of my socks. ๐Ÿ™

  77. I would love to make that sweet winter bag. Please enter me.

  78. I’ve never knitted a purse, so this looks like a good place to start. The part about only one ball is really encouraging. Please enter me for it.

I’ve been trying double knitting. That, and reversible knitting, seem to be hot topics right now. Lucy Neatby just brought out a DVD on double knitting and M’Lou Baber has a gorgeous double knitting book with beautiful jackets and coats. Iris Schreier has a new book on reversible knitting, which includes a section on double knitting.
