My current work in progress:

Seaforth designed by Alice Starmore, knit in British Breeds 5-ply Guernsey Wool on US 3 needles.

Just So You Know

I am still sock-knitting. I have finished the Sprucey Lucy socks.

I’ll be writing this pattern up soon — I’ll try to make it available this week. I’m going to St. Louis on Thursday for the Loopy Ewe Spring Fling and I’ve got a lot of random “stuff” to do before I leave, but the pattern is almost done.

Sprucey Lucy will be a freebie, in celebration of my new book and as a thank you to everyone who has said such nice things about it. πŸ™‚

Speaking of Freebies

Did you see that Potter Craft is giving away a free copy of Socks From the Toe Up. Go here to enter the drawing!

The Next Sock . . .

. . . will be knit from this:

That’s Claudia Hand Painted Yarn in the “Pink Cloud” colorway. I’ve had this in my stash for ages. I went into the stash room yesterday to root around for a yarn for my next project and realized I hadn’t made anything with Claudia Hand Painted in a long time.

This next project will be a super-easy sock. It will go to the Spring Fling with me andΒ  I want something I don’t have to pay close attention to since there will be lots of socializing going on!

Lucy is clearly worn out from the weekend.

  1. Wendy,

I am really enjoying the book. Up until now, I have only knit sock cuff down. Your book has inspired me to knit socks from the toe up. Enjoy the Spring Fling!

  2. I really like the colors in the Claudia Hand Painted. I’ve not tried that yarn yet, but I think there will be some in my shopping cart soon.

  5. That Claudia’s Handpaint yarn colorway reminds me of ballet slippers with the pink shoe part and the beige suede part that is on the bottom.

  6. Ohhhhhhhhhhh, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, yuuuummmmmmmmm !!!!!! That “pink cloud” looks scrumdidiliumptious!!!!!!!!!!!! πŸ™‚ Lucky Lucy… curled up and happy! My kitties are streeetched out on the tile floor in my hubby’s bathroom– it’s in the 90s here! Ay carumba! luv.m.

  7. Hmmm… Just so you know I tried to enter the contest and got an email back that the contest was over. Too bad. πŸ™

  8. Cute socks. Cute yarn. Really cute cat.

  9. Love the blog..have just bought a copy of the Socks from the Toe Up today and looking forward to receiving it in about 2-3 weeks. I can then get on with the KAL on Ravelry for the socks from your book.

Would have loved to win a copy from the competition and have tried to enter and if I win, I know a friend who would just love it too.

  10. YAY! They’re beautiful! And lovely yarn for your next project, I’ve got some claudia hand painted but haven’t used it yet….

  11. I’ve been reading your blog for a while now and got inspired to knit socks after many years of avoidance. My first pair (plain knitting with self striping yarn) are done and I am working on a pair with a garter rib through the instep. Both are done top down. Toe up socks will be next. I think I’ll have your book in my hands by then. πŸ™‚

Until then, could you tell me (or point me to the appropriate post) why you prefer toe up socks? Was there an epiphany moment that led to this preference?

Thanks for an inspiring blog and cute Lucy pics.

I can’t say enough good things about your new book! And the sprucey lucy socks will be an amazing addition to my pattern binder! It’s also nice since I have a kitty named lucy. Thank you so much!

  16. I’m still waiting for my book. Pink Cloud ….. Beautiful.

  17. Love the Sprucey Lucy socks and the color. How generous of you to give us the pattern. Love Claudia hand painted. Thanks so much for all you do for us. Have a wonderful time and the fling.

  18. Wendy — Your new book is absolutely FAB! I’ve already had it spiral bound (as I do with all my soft cover books that I know I will be definitely using.) My first toe is done and I’m 3 inches up on the Gansey sock.!!

Have a great time at the fling — I’ll be there in spirit!

  19. mmm pink clouds, that’s my kind of color

  20. Yay for free patterns!

And I love Claudia’s. Love the colors, love the feel…so I’ve been buying it often, two skeins at a time. Finally started knitting with one of those pairs of skeins and (as you can see in recent posts on my blog) was very afraid that I was going to end up with a very short sock. I didn’t and I’m now finishing up the second of the pair but I sure used up almost every inch!

Still, despite the tense knitting, it’s yummy, yummy yarn.

  21. Just wondering: From time to time you mention that you are working on a “stealth project”. How does a project earn that designation?

  22. I love that Claudia hand painted. I have some in another colorway in my stash just waiting for the right project. I’m sure you’re going to have fun with yours.

  23. That pink cloud yarn is lovely.

  24. Oh my gosh!! I love your book. You did a great job and I am finally going to do some toe up socks. Thanks

  25. Cool socks – but it’s so funny how you so casually throw in “stash ROOM”… hehehe.. when most of us have a plastic bin or two.. but I have seen pictures of your stash room and I gotta say, it’s pretty awesome πŸ™‚

  26. I just bought your book! I really like the techniques and tutorial section. And all the patterns are beautiful and stylish. I look forward to learning the toe up method!

  27. Michele In Maine says:

Don’t let her fool you. She is secretly planning a kitty sleepover while you’re away. I only know because my kitties got invited and I found the invitation hidden away….

  28. Just so YOU know…I just got an e-mail from Potter Craft…that contest to win your book is closed…too bad THEY didn’t let you know…

  29. Love the Sprucey Lucy socks, & I look forward to adding the pattern to my Wendy collection. You create gorgeous patterns faster than I can knit them! I’m in awe.

I got my copy of your new book yesterday – yippee-hoo!!! I’m already plotting which yarns in my stash would look great in which patterns. I want to make them all!

And there may have been a late-night order to the Loopy Ewe yesterday for the 2 new WendyKnits patterns and some sock yarn. Just saying…. πŸ˜‰

  30. I picked up the book this weekend and I was very impressed. I love how clear all the photos are. In many books of sock patterns there are only one or two pictures of the socks. It’s great to see so many pictures!

I also got my consolation box, so it was a great weekend all around!

  31. I’ve been knitting socks for a couple of years now, but have never knit a patterned sock (beyond two by two ribbed), or a sock from the toe down. I think, when this pattern is released, I’ll give it a try. πŸ™‚

  32. Finally!! My books arrived today. Not a single pair in the book that I don’t want to knit – good grief! I really need to learn to knit faster. I also just got my Knitpicks order and I got some yarn in spruce. Perfect for my Sprucey Lucy socks! Thanks so much for your book and all the patterns you share.

  33. Thank you so much for signing my book on Saturday even though I couldn’t be at Knit Happens for the event. I hear it was a smashing success and it was a crush! How wonderful for you! When I was in today they only had about 8 or 9 books left of the original 50 ordered, so you’re a hot seller! Congratulations on an outstanding book!. My husband, the printer, says the book is extremely well done from the graphics, printing, organization , etc. point of view as well. It is a masterpiece and I think I’ll be making every item in it!

  34. You butthead. Going to St. Louis without me. *pouting*

Hit Ted Drews while you are there, have a blast and thanks a million for sharing sprucy Lucy with all of us!
