My current work in progress:

Seaforth designed by Alice Starmore, knit in British Breeds 5-ply Guernsey Wool on US 3 needles.

Miscellaneous Item Number One

The Sandvik shawl is now available for sale on Ravelry, but you can purchase it from here, too (and from my Patterns for Sale page):

Sandvik Faroese Shawl

This shawl is knit from laceweight yarn (Black Bunny Fibers alpaca/shetland blend) on a US 3 (3.25mm) needle at an unblocked gauge of 6 sts/8 rows to the inch. I used between 900 — 1000 yards.

You can make the shawl longer or shorter by simply knitting more or fewer rows. The bottom is finished with a seed stitch band

Unblocked: 52โ€ across the top edge (wingspan), 22โ€ down the center back
Lightly Blocked: 64โ€ across the top edge (wingspan), 26โ€ down the center back

Miscellaneous Item Number Three

What I’m knitting:

It’s another Faroese shawl, this one being knit from the bottom up. And a lot faster knit than Sandvik, because it is knit from a much heavier yarn, using a US 7 (4.5mm) needle.

The yarn is Lorna’s Laces Pearl, and I bought it a few weeks ago when The Loopy Ewe had all Lorna’s Laces yarns on sale. It’s dk/light worsted weight and it’s a blend of bamboo and silk. This is my first time using it and I’m loving it. My colorway is “Mineshaft.”

DK weight on a size 7 goes much faster than laceweight on a size 3. Imagine that.

Lucy sez:

“Well, duh.”

  1. The design is really popping with the Pearl! That’s gorgeous!

  2. I agree with Kim!

  3. Would you say Sandvik is relatively easy for a long time knitter who hasn’t knit lace?

  4. you keep up the beautiful designs and you will have to do a book on shawls…you are doing an awesome job with these patterns and the yarn you pick is just delightful….thanks for sharing…

  5. I have my pattern and my yarn now to find the time. Thanks.

  6. After using all that laceweight, you’ll feel like you’re flying through the DK. Love that design!

  7. Both of your shawls are beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

  8. Put your socks on your website too! ๐Ÿ™‚ I need to make the Sunflower socks for my sister-in-law for Christmas…of course, I decide this after the sale at Loopy Ewe and they are all gone, baby, gone.

  9. I’m loving the new shawl in the Lorna’s Laces already.

I really like the geometric patterns that are emerging in your knitting lately. And you were so clever to incorporate them in the shoulder shaping of the Sandvik — cool.

  11. Lucy is so smart! Well, duh indeed.

I still need to take photos for my destash (probably a sign that I don’t truly want to destash). I should see if any of my yarns are the proper yardage for one of these patterns. It feels like forever since I’ve done lace.

  12. Wendy, you put the rest of us to shame by your talent. Beautiful shawl,

  13. Glorious. I have a couple of skeins of silk / merino laceweight just begging to turn into the Sandvik shawl. Can’t decide whether to start Order to Chaos or Sandvik next after Exonumist (which is on the third repeat of Chart E).

So, given your usual rate of progress, we can expect to see the new shawl finished and blocked tomorrow, with the pattern fully edited and ready for sale by …. lunch time?

  14. Isn’t the LL Pearl dreamy? It blocks and drapes beautifully too.

  15. Wow, this is looking great in the variegated! Pretty pattern so far, too. thanks for making the pattern available!

  16. That is seriously beautiful yarn. How could I have missed it? (on my way to TLE to take a look…)

  17. OOOO – I LOVE the silk/bamboo blends! So fabulous to work with!!!

Oh and Lucy, Murphy sends you purrs . . . .

  18. As much as I love the intricacy of lace on small needles, there’s something wonderful about ‘bigger’ lace. Maybe it’s the sense of accomplishment at seeing progress faster!

  19. traceymae says:

you are without a doubt the fastest knitter ever !!!

  20. madonnaearth says:

That yarn is gorgeous! It’s going to make a lovely shawl!

  21. I bought that yarn in that colorway at the Spring Fling!

It was simply irresistible. So lovely. It’s looking amazing in that shawl. I don’t know what mine is going to grow up to be yet.
