A Slick Trick

This is not a knitting trick, but a trick for the Droid phone, which is my new favorite toy.

I was all set to purchase the multimedia docking station for the Droid — the one that charges it while displaying weather, time, photos, etc. I figured I’d replace my alarm clock with this nifty little solution that costs $29.99.

Well, you can download a free app from the Android Market called “Dockrunner.” It puts your Droid into multimedia mode without the dock. Here’s my little Droid running multimedia mode and going commando without a dock. ๐Ÿ˜‰

You need to plug your charger in on what is now the bottom of the phone, so you do need some sort of stand for it if you want it to stand up nicely on your nightstand.

I ordered this stand from for $3.99. Beats $30!

I’ve had my Droid for a week, and I am still in love with it.

Current Knitting

I’m working on a sock design using the lovely MacKintosh Iona sock yarn pictured in yesterday’s blog post. Here is the first sock, which I completed yesterday:

I’m calling the design “Thistle and Heather Socks” and it will eventually be available for sale from MacKintosh Yarns.

Or maybe “Heather and Thistle Socks.”

We Have a Winner

The winner of the Nicky Epstein book is Carol R., chosen by the great and mighty Random Number Generator. Thank-you to everyone who left a comment. If your name is Carol R., check your email. ๐Ÿ™‚

Psssst! I’ll have another book to give away later this week . . .

Meanwhile, Lucy hasn’t done any more mountain climbing.

  1. I totally thought this post was going to be about Kyrana’s cat, Slick. I love the socks!
.-= biomaj5´s last blog ..I have excellent frogging skills =-.

  2. RedfordPhyl says:

Ooooh! Love that sock! So many patterns, so little time. I can also see that pattern on a scarf.

  3. does the droid work on the metro? I remember you said that’s why you didn’t get the iphone? Could Lucy’s mountain climbing be related to the electric ballwinder and any high pitched noise it might make? Love the purple sock

  4. My vote is for “Thistle and Rose”. Beautiful sock!

  5. i do have to say i like heather and thistle better…. but i may be biased ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Cool gadget and wonderful socks!
.-= Susan Mohr Krupke´s last blog ..Druid Mitts for Paige =-.

  7. I am somewhat in awe of your ability to knit this quickly. Gotta say.

And I like the colorway for those socks. Nice.

Thirdly, I would be jealous of your phone, but I’m guessing that you might actually be able to hear calls on yours, and I specifically chose mine for the crappy call quality, just to have an excuse to not actually talk to people. I vastly prefer texting.

Especially when the texters use good grammar.

    .-= Virginia´s last blog .. =-.

  8. I could change my name to Carol R.!

  9. Cathie Jones says:

I woke up this morning with a frozen nose, wishing I could sleep the way Lucy does!

Also in awe of your knitting speed — been working on the same pair of socks for 2 weeks and just turned the heels yesterday. Sheeeeesshhhhh.

And still jealous of the Droid. Wonder if I can work a deal with Verizon . . . hmmmmmm.

  10. Thistle and heather is easier to say. Try saying “Heather and Thistle” three times.

    Lovely by either name.

  11. Lovely sock! My name’s Heather and I married a Scot (did you know the thistle is the symbol of Scotland?). I must must get this sock pattern. Someday, someday, I’ll be able to knit the Balmoral shawl, as well.

The socks are a nice start!

  12. I love that you described the Droid as “going commando”. But I am easily amused…

  13. I think “Heather and Thistle” has a nice ring to it — and it seems to roll off the tongue well. Oh, and it’s a really cool design, too!
    .-= annalilly´s last blog .."Ribbit" =-.

  14. does “going commando” mean without underwear??
keep posting Droid tips since you convinced me to buy one today!

  15. I won’t buy a droid, because I’ve had so many problems with my last Motorola phone, though I still experience phone envy when I see it (well, that and I haven’t been able to convince myself that it is worth it to buy a phone that requires a data plan). I don’t use mine for calling as much as I ought, but am enjoying text messaging. I almost wish that we could flip our service plan to be something like 100 minutes a month and unlimited texting.

  16. Love the sock. Heather and Thistle seems to trip over the tongue best.

Hugs to Lucy, recovering from her intrepid adventure.

  17. Thanks for the Droid update . But Verizon thinks we’re a ‘marginal’ area, so as long as daughter is in school here, I don’t think I’ll go back.

Love the sock, though I confess my first impression was “dragonflies”. So just reverse the wing direction, and you have a new sock!

  18. I read your blog all the time but have really been sitting up and getting excited with your comments about the Droid. It’s time for me to upgrade from my current phone. I am girl who loves those litle kinds of geeky toys. I am ready to dump my PDA. It’s a pain carrying a phone and then having check the PDA for information when I can have both wrapped up in one along with so much more. I am so gettting a Droid! Keep posting new geeky techo Droid toys. I am so there!

  19. Heather and Thistle, love it!

fyi, Knit 1 magazine, which featured Wendy in its knitting blog story last winter, has ceased publication. Last issue came out in May and there is none planned for this fall/winter.

  20. Denise in Kent, WA says:

I must have been a Scot in a previous life because I am drawn to anything with a thistle motif. Love the new sock!

P.S. I hope Lucy has given up her climbing ways, or at least that she waits until there’s someone home to rescue her when she gets stuck.

  21. Patricia J. Richardson says:

    Love that sock!

  22. I wonder you don’t use an Iphon!

  23. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you so much for making this post! My boyfriend and I are combining our cellphone plans this weekend and were both planning to get Droids (mostly because we are giant geeks). I am so relieved to know that I don’t have to spend $30 (twice!) for stands for our phones! ๐Ÿ™‚ You rock!

  24. Mary Allen says:

I look forward to and always enjoy your email each day. I especially like any pics of Lucy, as I have 5(yup, 5) cats and they love to sit on any of my knitting or on my lap(along with a dog) whenever I’m knitting. Thanks for pics of all of your beautiful knitting! Mary K

  25. I love your blog/site. It’s so much fun to read all the sock goodies and kitten capers. Kristen’s new color book is a feast for the eyes, especially at this time of year.. No more leaves on the trees. Pat
