My current work in progress:

Seaforth designed by Alice Starmore, knit in British Breeds 5-ply Guernsey Wool on US 3 needles.

It is still very chilly today and to add insult to injury, I trudged back to the office this morning. I’ll admit that I was very jealous of Lucy, who went back to bed as I was leaving for work this morning. At least it was sunny today. Here’s the late afternoon sun glinting off the buildings:

But all is not doom and gloom, for I have finished the garter stitch triangle that makes up the center portion of the Aestlight Shawl, and picked up the stitches around that triangle.

I am now ready to commence the fun portion.

From the comments, some questions.

Annette asked:

I note that you sometimes use superwash wool in your shawls. I’ve always thought that superwash wool, or wool combined with synthetic fibers, does not hold the blocking well. So, I tend to shy away from that combo. What’s your opinion?

I’ve made a lot of lace pieces from superwash wool, and have never had any issues with blocking. I tend not to use synthetics, so can’t offer any opinion there.

A number of you have asked what I do with all the shawls I wear. Well, I either shred them or burn them.

No, just kidding. Some I give away, and some I keep and wear. As simple as that.

And several of you have asked what Lucy’s pillow says. Here you go:

Lucy agrees completely.

  1. It must be really cold there if you’re cold πŸ™‚

  2. I’m sorry I missed your BD! A belated happy one! Luv to U and Lucy. m

  3. I love the pillow – everything I own is covered with cat hair. My personal opinion is with all the cat hair flying around, our three furry children should be BALD!!!

  4. ok call me dumb here but i dont get the point of blocking. dosent it just go back to its unblocked state when you wash it? do you have to reblock every time you wash your items?

  5. Oh my goodness! I LOVE Lucy’s pillow! I am the mom of three dogs, and they leave hair everywhere! When I saw Lucy’s pillow, I had to laugh because my kids are always complaining about dog hair being everywhere! In fact, Santa gave them each lint rollers in their stockings.

  6. We have dog hair and feathers . . . everywhere! Lucy is so beautiful, she deserves to be treated like a queen! Snuggle up and keep warm!

  7. The high temp here was 19 F today — so of course the fire alarm went off during the last period class. As a teacher I was fortunate to be able to grab my coat on the way out, but not so lucky all the kids.

And of course, with a gray tabby, my favorite clothing color would be black, so I agree 100% with Lucy’s pillow.

  8. A belated happy birthday! Love Lucy’s pillow. I have several cat-themed ones around and they’re great for mid-back support. About the loose hair buildup? Well, my kitties have always considered that they’re the reason our houses have FURniture.

Stay warm and keep those new patterns coming. I’m really enjoying your first book, too.

  9. I’m with Lucy…..going back to sleep sounds better than going out in the cold. πŸ˜‰ And we have cat hair on our furniture, too, from Simba, our warrior kitty. Some warrior…..he’s asleep upside down on the chair.

  10. I have a nosey question. I haven’t heard any mention of KOARC in quite some time. Did I miss a post explaining his absence?

    Just wondering…

    Hi Wendy,
Another belated birthday greeting. I’m relatively new with reading your blog and am really enjoying it. Lucy is truely beautiful. I have not only a long haired cat that sheds, but a dog too! I really need a pillow like Lucy’s. Actually I could stuff a pillow with all that hair! Where did you find the pillow?

  12. I am having a slight issue with blocking on a Damson that I did with sock yarn. However that might be due to my own incompetence in blocking, rather than the yarn.

Fortunately, I have improved my blocking skills since October.

  13. Oh my gosh, where did you get that pillow, I love it!!!

  14. I finally learned that in order to live with cats and wear black, you have to get dressed and leave the house without sitting down.

Once we interviewed someone who, when she was pointing to a slide during her presentation, had something dangling under the sleeve. Dry-cleaning tag! Have any idea why? (snort)

  15. I finished my Aestlight shawl in Wollmeise on New Year’s Eve. I’m wearing it today – – -must say – – I LOVE IT! I think it is a combination of the pattern and the Wollmeise. What amazing drape from the Wollmeise – – I’m so surprised – – is it the way the yarn is spun? I usually never make a pattern twice but this is tempting to make again in Wollmeise. It is a fun knit even tho the edging can get a bit redundant. I will admit tho that I’m currently on the 6th mouse from your little booklet of patterns. I’ve got that one memorized – – pattern no longer needed! I’m trying to make mice for my sister’s and friend’s cats but my own spoiled felines keep stealing the mice I’m making! They currently have three more than they are supposed to! I must come up with a better hiding spot!

  16. I’ve seen Lucy’s pillow done up as shirts, bags, etc. It’s all true. Our kitty’s fur is white and black in the same strand, so no clothing hides it!

  17. I have that same pillow. My five cats agree, too. Yes, I have five cats. No I’m not a crazy cat lady. πŸ™‚ My boyfriend found the last two as 3-month old kittens in his back yard and we got attached….. No more. Really. We’re done. πŸ˜‰

Can’t wait to see the shawl as it progresses. Sometimes I think about taking the bus to work so I can have more daily knitting time. After driving to and from work, I’m usually not up to much more than vegging on the couch, especially when the roads aren’t great, like this week.

    Happy belated birthday!

  19. I’m wearing my first Aestlight right now and really love it. I have two more in various stages of completion.
