Now We Are Eight

Eight years ago today, I starting blogging my knitting. While it seems like a million years ago, it also feels like it was just yesterday.

In honor of this auspicious occasion, if you leave me a comment and mention which of one my patterns available for sale in my Ravelry shop you might like to win, I will, throughout the weekend, arbitrarily and completely at my whim, send free copies of patterns to randomly selected commenters. Be sure you leave a valid email addy in your comment (email addresses are not displayed on the blog once the comment is published). Alternatively, if you tell me your Ravelry username in your comment, I can send the pdf as a gift through Ravelry.

This is for people who leave comments. Please do not email me. Please do not use the “Contact me” form from the link at the top of the page. To leave a comment, you must visit my actual blog (not respond to the entry emailed to you, should you be subscribed to my blog via email). Once at, if you scroll down to the bottom of the post, you will see a link that looks something like this:

Click on the link that reads “x Responses” and it will open up the single page for the post. You will then need to scroll all the way to the bottom of the page to see the form that you need to fill out to comment.

(All this “how to leave a comment” instruction might seem a little over the top, but every time I have a contest that requires the leaving of comments I get many, many emails from people who don’t know how to leave a comment.)

Here is the state of the project I showed you yesterday.

Ooh, a lace edging.

The yarn is Tilli Tomas Demi Plie. The color is “Natural.” I picked this up a couple of years ago when someone was having a great sale (kpixie, perhaps?) along with a pile of it in the Parchment colorway, which became a Hanging Garden Stole (a birthday gift for my sister-in-law — last year I think).

This yarn is 100% silk and has 290 yards to 50 grams, so it’s sort of a heavy laceweight. I love this yarn.

Oh, what is that an edging for?

You’ll see. It’s either going to look fabulous or be a monumental fail.

Have a great weekend! I hope to see a bunch of you at fibre space tomorrow.

Lucy sez:

“I’m staying home. And I guess this means that Momma will be late coming home tomorrow. Hmmmph.”

  1. I like random contests, and I REALLY like birthdays. Happy birthday, or anniversary, whichever seems more appropriate! If I could pick a pattern from your shop, I’d pick the Faro Easy shawl. I haven’t tried a Faroese yet, and I’d like to.

Hm, wonder how that HTML is going to look.

  2. And look at me, I’m a rocket scientist! My Rav name is sarkasmo and I’m good at following instructions. πŸ™‚

  3. Hi Wendy, congratulations on 8 years of blogging. I’ve enjoying following your progress through most of those eight years. Wishing you many more happy blogging years — you’ve inspired me greatly.

Free pattern request, if you should choose me — Seaside Shawl. Rav name is jkberg.

Happy Easter to you and Lucy!

  4. I’ve been digging “Order to Chaos” pretty hard lately. πŸ˜€

Congrats on eight years, and I hope you do it for at least eight more!
.-= Leslie´s last blog ..Why some things change, and some things don’t. =-.

  5. Wow! 8 Years!! Congrats!! (which reminds me I need to order your new book)…

If I could pick a pattern, it would be the Argue Shawlette. Lovely!! (though I would love any of them:)).

  6. Happy eight years! I can’t say I’ve been reading you continuosly since you started, but I know I visited you periodlically early, and now am a regular reader. If I had to pick one, I’d say the “order to chaos” shawl, but it’s a touch choice.

Enjoy your weekend! And Lucy, I hope you enjoy yours too (even if Wendy is late).

  7. Yay for 8 years of Wendy! I like the Faro Easy.

  8. Well HAPPY ANIVERSARY!!! I have enjoyed reading you blog over the past years. You have a great talent. I love the “Order to Chaos” circular shawl!!
    Best Wishes

  9. Wowza…eight years. That’s quite the accomplishment. I looked and I would like either the Sandvik or the Faro Easy shawl patterns. Everything is lovely.
.-= Lynda Hitt´s last blog ..Another Unconscious Mutterings and other stuffs =-.

  10. I would love Projects for leftover sock yarn. I have quite a bit of it. πŸ™‚

  11. Natasha says:

I’d love to receive a copy of Talisman. Thanks for all your blogging over the years. I first found you through Crazy Aunt Purl when she was trying to make the Kitty Pi.

  12. Is it bad that I already own a whole lot of your patterns?? What I need to do is, y’know, find some lovely yarn and MAKE them. If I had to pick one it would be Chevron Shawlette and Stole. They’re so lovely!

Congrats on 8 years of blogging. That’s a whole lot of blogging and a whole lot of knitting!
    .-= Deinera´s last blog ..Another $10 spent =-.

  13. Gee, Wendy, eight years already. Wow. you’re doing a great job. I market myself as Order out of Chaos, so the Order to Chaos shawl would be perfect for me If I’m so lucky as to be chosen. My Ravelry name is Ericaknits. Keep up the great work.

  14. DharmaPuppy Pinklady says:

I love your Blog! I have been wanting to do one of your Lace Shawls… Seaside Shawlette, but got other items on the needle right now.

  15. Susanne says:

Happy 8 years! I’m a big fan of Lucy – she looks like my old kitty, but friendlier. And I’d love to win Order to Chaos. (marigold61 on rav)

  16. Congratulations on 8 years! I subscribe to your blog through bloglines, but also via Facebook, and I’m CarolineNH on Ravelry. Congratulations on your successes!

  17. It’s been eight years?! You were one of the very first blogs I ever read. I can remember what a fun idea it was and I became a groupie right away. I admire that you are still here despite the trials and tribulations it may have caused. I wish you many, many more happy years of blogging. I really like your pattern for using leftover bits of sock yarn. I can see my Christmas tree adorned with little socks!! Thanks!

  18. Happy Anniversary with many many more to come!!!!!
I really like Lady Bertram πŸ™‚

I wonder how many people will email? (go ahead, kick me!!!) LOL

  19. My Bailey cat says “mow” to Lucy. Congrats on 8 years – I’d love the Seaside Shawl. Rav name lmdoyle

  20. Wow congrats on 8 years. I love all your patterns and both of your books. I dont think I would be knitting socks successfully without your 1st book. If I could pick anything on your Ravelry store I would go with Chevron Shawlette and Stole. I like it and am thinking I have some wollmeise that is perfect for it.
My email is and my ravelry name is vonmarie

    Congrats again

  21. HeatherB says:

Eight years! Where does the time go. I think you were the first knitting blog (or probably blog of any kind) that I started reading. I remember because I told my boyfriend about it because of your cute kitty – this was pre-Lucy (not that Lucy isn’t a cute kitty!)

I like all of your patterns but at the moment Lady Bertram seems to be calling out to me. πŸ™‚

  22. Hi Wendy,
Congrats on 8 years. I would love to win Faro Easy. My raverly name is Craftysly.
    Sheri from KY

  23. Happy blog-birthday! I love so many of your patterns- I think the Argus Shawlette is the one I’d most want to “win” (though Order to Chaos is probably my favorite of your shawls, but it’s unrealistic I’d knit it.) though if I were to purchase one it would probably be a sock. But isn’t the point of “winning” that it’s something you wouldn’t buy? Very generous of you to share with us all!

I just recieved your new book this weekend and want to knit almost everything in it- so I’m going to be a very happy knitter for awhile. You really outdid yourself on Toe Up Socks for Everybody!

    .-= Jessica´s last blog ..Yoga kicked my ass… =-.

  24. Many happy returns of the day! I hope that you and Lucy will have time to celebrate before you dash off for the weekend. If I am chosen I would like to try the Sandvik Faroese Shawl. I have never tried a Faroese shawl so will be diving in at the deep end. My Ravelry name is Uny.

  25. OoooOOo, random AND arbitrary, that’s my favorite! πŸ˜‰ Congrats on the 8 year mark, though I remember visiting your website waaaay before that, ogling your knitting and wondering how you knit so fast and admiring your cowboy boots. I’m OG, baby.

I would love to make the Sandvik Faroese Shawl, because I’ve never made a faroese shawl, and I hear they’re good for the plusher frame. Such as mine! And you know my Ravelry name…PlazaJen! See you in a few weeks, dahlink!
    .-= PlazaJen´s last blog ..The Road =-.

  26. Happy 8th Anniversary! I just love circular shawls, so if I’m forced to choose only one, it’s the “Order to Chaos” circular shawl. I’m sidravitale on Ravelry.
.-= Sidra Vitale´s last blog ..sidravitale Tea = happiness. Is the converse also true? =-.

  27. Happy Blogging Anniversary! I love the look of the Sandvik Faroese Shawl. (Rav ID: Clearbrook)

I hope you and Lucy will have many more years of enticing us with your works.

  28. I love your Argus Shawlette. Your work is so inspiring. Thanks.

  29. Happy Blog-iversary Wendy! It seems like yesterday when I came upon your blog. That was almost 7 years ago ( 3 jobs, a house and a baby ago)! I’ve knit several of your sock patterns, but now I’m really digging the Chevron Stole you just created. I hope I win the pdf, but either way, that’s my next project, lol.

  30. Happy Blogiversary πŸ™‚

I have my eye on Order to Chaos…of course, I have 3 others of yours already purchased to knit…

  31. Happy Blogiversary! I really enjoy reading your blog and seeing pictures of Miss Lucy. My fuzzball lives with my Mom, so I don’t get to see her daily (Boo!). I love watching you name your patterns, some I totally get and some I puzzle over for ages before I decide if it “fits” or not. It’s fun.
In short, thank you for your posts that make my day better and for the inspiring knitting that makes me feel confident in my own ability to create.
Shawlettes are not my “thing” but if they were, I’d knit your Miss Woodhouse Shawlette. I’ve done two shawls and I’ve not quite figured out how best to wear them save for at weddings in the traditional sort of way. I’d love to see a blog post about how you actually drape/wear yours and what with! I always feel silly wearing a shawl with jeans…

  32. GnomeSweetGnome says:

I just wanted to say I love your blog. Especially the photos of Lucy in each entry (isn’t Lucy such a great pet name?). And I would be most interested in winning a copy of your Seaside Shawlette pattern. My Ravelry name is GnomeSweetGnome. πŸ™‚ Keep up the great blogging/designing/knitting/writing!

  33. How nice of you! I adore your Exonumist’s Shawl pattern πŸ™‚ And a bunch of others too, of course πŸ˜‰

    I’m Artsyfish on Ravelry.

  37. P.S. Happy Birthday!

  38. Carol B says:

    Happy Anniversary, Wendy!

I think if I were lucky enough to be randomly/arbitrarily selected, I’d choose the Sandvik shawl. I’m cebmd on Ravelry.

  40. 8 years! I started knitting at the end of 2002 and your blog was one of the first that I started reading. So crazy that it’s been so long! 41. Annette says:

Congrats on the Blogoversary! (I hate that word, but it works right?)

I’d love any of your patterns. I’m a newbie beginner knitter. So if you’d like to surprise me with a pattern, pick an easy one please!

I do love the Lady Bertram one though. They’re all so pretty. How does one choose?

  42. Happy Anniversary, Wendy. Your blog is my all-time favorite, and the one I check every day. Thank you for all the time it takes to make it such a delight to read. I love all your shawl patterns, but I would say I’m more partial to stoles – so I would pick either the Cheveron stole and shawlette or the Gothic Spires stole and scarf (when you finish writing the pattern). Here’s to another 8 years…Lucy would love it, I’m sure.

  43. Leslie C says:

    Happy Anniversary!
I’ve had my eye on the lovely Miss Woodhouse Shawlette and a pattern would be much appreciated. I am SweetBay on Ravelry.

  58. Happy Blog Birthday! I’ve been reading your blog for the past 4 years and have enjoyed it very much. I think I’d like the Lady Bertram shawl pattern if I win. My Ravelry name is MrsHipp. Thanks for the contest!

  60. Happy Blogiversary, may you have many many more. I love the latest book, am wearing out the first book. And in a completely random fashion would not mind the Sandvik Faroese Shawl if you so desire to send it.

  90. The Faro Easy shawl is a pattern that I have had my eye on for a while. I think it’s the picture that you posted on Ravelry of Lucy luxuriating in its yarnie comfort that sold me on it. Of course, if I knit one for myself, then I might have to fight my kitty, Maggie Mae, for ownership of it….she does love the good life πŸ˜€

I have all of your books, but hope that someday I will be able to add one to my collection that is written by Wendy Johnson on the topic of shawls. I am fascinated by your lace designs. You seem to produce them so quickly, making it look so easy, that I wonder if you ever sleep at all! Till then I will continue to look forward to reading your blog each day and wish you 80 x 8 more anniversaries.

I have one of your books but haven’t had a chance to quite get into sock-making yet, though I’m excited to start one of these days… projects pile up, ya know.
