Oh Baby

Last week I got a review copy of this new book:

This is Design It, Knit It: Babies by Debbie Bliss. Not only does it contain adorable patterns for wee ones like this:

And this:

But is also a book of design how-to.

After the pattern section, there is a “design workshop” section.

Debbie goes into detail about the best shapes for garments for little ones and discusses sizing small garments. There are pages of sketches of basic designs, like this one:

You are encouraged to photocopy the page to add your own embellishments.

There are also a couple of pages of knitter’s graph paper suitable for photocopying. There is a charted alphabet and some charts for cute motifs for babies that you can add to a plain garment for a bit of colorwork. There is even a page of very pretty gift tags that you can cut out and use on your gifted baby knits.

And in the back of the book, there is a nifty little insert. On one side, it has rulers in inches and a guide to the standard yarn weight system:

On the other side, the ruler is marked in centimeters, and has information on needle sizes, as well as a list of abbreviations. A very clever and handy addition to the book.

Who would like my review copy?

Respond with a comment on this post (and if you don’t know how to comment on a post, read the instructions here) by noon Eastern time on Sunday, June 27. The all-knowing, all-powerful Random Number Generator will select a winner from among the comments at that time.

Lucy sez:

“I’m pretty and I know it.”

  1. I’m definitely interested. I’ve wanted to waylay my friends and measure all of their kids to decide what size garments to make. Even without kids of my own, knitting for little ones is so satisfying and speedy!

  2. imjustlori says:

Oh, how cute! Sure, I’ll add my name to the list of people who would be interested. πŸ™‚

  3. I would love to have a copy. My 18 month old granddaughter wants more hand knits from grandma!

  4. Hi Wendy and Miss Lucy!!!! I would love a chance to win this book. I’m hoping to one day start a family and it seems that it would be a great refernce guide!!! Thanks for all of your great info and awesome giveaways!!! Have a great week and can’t wait to see more of your work!

  5. I have several babies about to be born, not by me of course, but you get my drift. This would sure come in handy.

  6. Please add my name to the list. The book looks amazing!

  7. That Wendy certainly is a pretty one!
.-= Leslie´s last blog ..Goal (kinda) achieved! =-.

  8. Lovely book. Very cute. I always enjoy making little items because they’re fast and good for my “project starter” mindset. And because they’re so small I tend to actually finish baby items. Unlike adult items which I quickly set aside. Ha!

  9. What a sweet book! πŸ˜€ I would love a chance to win it. πŸ˜€

And is it just me or is Lucy getting prettier and prettier every day?

  10. southparknitter says:

I love to design/knit baby and children’s sweaters and would love to have your review copy.

  11. Oh, fabulous! I am at that stage where I suddenly have many babies I need to be knitting for, and the design information looks particularly helpful.
.-= jacicita´s last blog ..[The Thin Place] =-.

  12. Wow, with all my cousins having babies, this would be a perfect book for me! I really enjoy your blog, thank you for the frequent updates.

  13. Mary Beth says:

Stay cool, Ms. Lucy, it’s hot out there!

  14. Please enter me in the drawing!
    .-= Allison´s last blog ..I promised you scarves =-.

  15. Despite the fact that I have neither children or grandchildren and at age 59 I can’t see that changing any time soon, I’d love to have the book. Baby clothes are so much fun to knit and handknit baby items are really popular auction items at my nonprofit’s annual fundraiser.

  16. Barb Harger says:

    Very nice!

  17. Hi Wendy! Congratulations on your Clean Eating Progress! That is so exciting! I wish I could know what kinds of things you are eating. I got two of the Clean Eating Books, but my problem is I work alot of hours and wait until the last minute to eat and then I have to eat right away because I’m starving and end up with fast food of some sort. Also, I know this is bad, but I don’t really like vegetables too much – I can tolerate them, but don’t look forward to them too much. Any pointers would be appreciated. NOTE: I also look at the Clean Eaters forum on Ravelry so if you posted there I would see too! πŸ™‚ Congratulations again!

  18. Mary Pat says:

What a great book – will have to add to my library; hopefully by winning it.

  19. Can’t wait to take a look at that book. Debbie Bliss has such a great way of creating simple looking stylish knits

  20. Thanks for posting about the book. Haven’t heard of it before.

  21. Just in time for the plethora of babies that seem to be appearing all around me. I tend to like her patterns, though I find they are made to fit very loosely (read: BIG).

  22. Having last been around babies 25 years ago (my own) this book looks like it would be a great reference/reminder of what styles/shapes work best for little ones and their caretakers!

  23. Heather says:

    Sounds useful. πŸ™‚

  24. Kathy D says:

The book looks like a great addition to any library. Thanks for offering. Sign me up!

  25. I love the idea of the sketch book pages to help the reader design projects and make adjustments. As someone who has trouble knitting 10 swatches to get the proper gauge, I prefer to make garment adjustments as I go along. This sounds like just the ticket!

  26. I would love to win your review copy of the book. I have not knit many baby items in the past and would love to have some in my “stash” when I need them. Thanks!

  27. My darling granddaughter would look so cute in those garments :>) Thank you for parting with your copy.

  28. Sue Nelson says:

What a clever idea to include those other tools in a book. I am starting to knit baby items and would love to have the book. Thanks!

  29. That book looks like a must have!

  30. sjanova says:

Totally love the baby knits book! And the linen stitch, whew. But yes, Lucy is gorgeous.

  31. Looks like a great book! Thanks for the opportunity to win it!

  32. Although I generally follow patterns (with modifications at times) rather than design my own, this book sounds like I would get a lot out of it, and it might be the perfect thing to do some beginning designing. Thanks for offering it!

  33. I just finished a Debbie Bliss pattern baby sweater and would really enjoy the features you described in her latest book. Another grandchild is due and my needles are flying.

  34. What a nice book and how nice of you to offer it to one of your readers.
Hope you are feeling better. I trust that Lucy has been taking good care of you.
