Lace Edge Cardi and a Giveaway

I finished up the knitting on my Lace Edge Cardi on Thursday, and my Friday night knitting in fron of the tv project consisted of the seaming and neckband. Ta-da!

I used just under 4 skeins of Tempted Lovely Grrl yarn in a colorway that Stacy dyed to my specifications — a lovely milk chocolate. I knit this cardi with a US size 5 needle at a gauge of 6 stitches and 7.5 rows to the inch. I ave written up the pattern to fit 5 sizes — finished chest circumferences of 36, 40, 44, 48, and 52 inches. The pattern will be available very soon.

I am extremely pleased with how this cardi turned out. It is soft and drapey, just the way I wanted it. I was originally going to do i-cord ties at the beginning of the v-neck, but changed my mind. I made the size 44″ for myself because I wanted it a bit oversized. If I want to fasten in closed, I will use a shawl pin. But if/when you make the pattern you cold do the i-cord ties or button loops if you want.

I of course started a new project, but I’ll talk about that tomorrow.

Vampire Knits

On Friday I received a review copy of the new book Vampire Knits: Projects to Keep You Knitting From Dusk Until Dawn by Genevieve Miller from my publisher, Potter Craft.

Gotta tell you , I approached this book with a fair amount of skepticism. But I was very pleasantly surprised. The projects, all vampire-themed, are very cute and clever, and are in a wide range of experience levels. Both beginner and more experienced knitters will find things they can knit in here. And there is a great variety of things, ranging from very functional, like a lovely hoodie, to fun and quirky — bottle cozies for your vampire (and other) beverages.

There are 28 projects in all, including a very nice sweater suitable for a man, a child’s pullover, a gorgeous lace shrug, sexy lace mitts and cabled mittens, a hoodie, a cape, a pillow, bags, and more.

Here’s a few of my favorite projects. A cute hoodie:

A sweet feminine capelet:

A tote bag:

And bottle cozies!

The book is beautifully designed and has a Victorian feel to it. There are cute little side notes throughout that impart vampire lore, as well as a couple of quizzes and some very useful information on getting blood out of your clothing and yarn.

I was very tempted to keep the review copy to myself, but decided it would be much nicer to share.

Who wants my review copy? Here’s what you gotta do:

Leave a comment to this blog entry and tell me who your favorite movie or tv vampire is and tell me why. Leave a comment by 4:00pm eastern time Wednesday, September 29, and I will draw a winner at random from those who followed the directions properly. I’ll post the winning entry in my Wednesday blog post, ad at that time will tell you my favorite tv or movie vampire.

This has nothing to do with anything, but here is my 2004 Honda Civic’s odometer reading as of this morning:

I bought this car new in February 2004. Proof that I don’t drive very much! πŸ˜‰

And here is what Lucy has planned for today:

It’s a dark rainy day, so that looks good to me. There is a Buffy marathon on tv, so I’m good to go!

  1. Eric Northman from True Blood is my favorite vampire. The TV character is pretty close to the way the he is in the books. Very nice eye candy too.

  2. Pamela Swett says:

Love the cardi! My favorite vampire is Lestat in Queen of the Damned. I am a huge Anne Rice fan and wasn’t impressed with Tom Cruise’s performance in Interview With the Vampire. Whoever he was, he did s great job with Lestat. Also my favorite book by her. Lestat grabs immortality by the horns and has such awesome power.

  3. Your new Cardi is great. What a gift to design and execute just what you want. I am looking forward to getting the pattern.

Also, like that hoodie from the “Vampire” book. Good for you for promoting it.

Love what Lucy has planned for the day.

  4. Oh I have been looking at this book and I do want it. My favorite tv vampire has to be Eric Northman of TrueBlood. I like him because he in charge and you can see it. He is not wishy washy. Also the actor that plays him is a cutie which does help ;). At one point I would have said Vampire Bill from True Blood but the way the season 3 ended with him being dishonest I dont like him anymore.

  5. Favourite vampire? Has to be Spike from Buffy. Funny, hot and dangerous – what’s not to like?

    Love the cardigan, BTW!

  6. Don’t consider me as an entry for the giveaway, that’s not my kind of style. I just wanted to say how lovely the cardigan is!
    .-= Corrine´s last blog ..I got it! =-.

  7. I’m a classic person – Dracula all the way!

  8. Barnabus Collins from the old soap opera, Dark Shadows! Now that was one scary guy!

  9. Jen In Ypsi says:

gotta go with Mina Harker in League of Extraordinary Gentleman. Kick ass with a kick ass wardrobe!

  10. Susan (LotusHips) says:

Russell Edgington from True Blood! He is a full scale loony who carries his dead husband around in a crystal jar talking to him as he wreaks havoc πŸ™‚

  11. Michelle B. says:

OK I”m gonna go old school and got with Brad Pitt & Tom Cruise in An interview with a Vampire: TheVampire Cronicles.

  12. I think Jen has the right idea – Mina (short for Willemina I believe) Harker in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
    a) her wardrobe crosses from demure Victorian to leather goddess
    b) she is not the wilting damsel type
    c) although vampiric (and embracing it) she has a conscience
    d) she’s a redhead (sorry – biased there)
    e) the red scarf she wears for the first part of the movie is looks like an AWESOME knit!….. (oooh! Halloween is close isn’t it?)

  13. Bela Lugose – gotta love those old black and whites!
.-= Julie´s last blog ..Fall Is In The Air =-.

  14. Love the cardi! I haven’t seen True Blood yet, but it seems to be quite a popular answer. I’m more of a Twilight fan, so I’m going to say that my favorite vampire is Alice.

  15. Always has been and always will be Barnabus Collins. I was 8 or 9 when Dark Shadows was originally on. Scared me half to death, and my sister always threatened that he’d come in thru the window and get me if I touched her stuff.

  16. My favorite vampire is Count Duckula! I used to love watching it with my kids and I wish it were still around. I love that little capelet!

  17. Wow you are asking such a loaded question lol. How do I decide. Hmm I love Eric from Trueblood and as a close second I loved the lead character in the show Vampire: The Masquerade.

  18. Karen Backman says:

    Love the Cardi!

I would have to say that my favorite movie vampire is Amilyn from the movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I like my fictional characters over the top, and Paul Reubens depiction was hilariously over the top.

    Yay for rain!

  19. Oh no, this is not a second entry….con’t from first.
I like Eric because he reminds me of a true vampire, not all wishy washy and twinkly. Vampire the masquerade was an interesting show a friend had me watch, it was like taking the show Dallas and vamping them up. It was unfortunate because the lead actor died while between filming and the show only had 8 episodes.

  20. I love the Victorian look of that book! Super cute. The sweater looks great!
.-= LaLa´s last blog ..TheKnitGirllls Ep 26 – Where the Featherweight is Done! =-.

  21. I’m not much into vampires, though I did love Frank Langella’s Dracula way back in 1979. He was just so beautiful, I’d have loved him playing any role. Actually, I did, and still do! πŸ™‚

  22. Ohhh favorite huh, thats a tough one. Liked Stewart Townsend in ‘Queen of the Damned’, although the movie butchered the books imho.
Thanks for the review, I was very curious about this book.

I love the cardi, so pretty!
    .-= Stacy Little´s last blog ..Awesome!!! =-.

  23. Favorite vampire — Nosferatu! He’s the ultimate classic vampire. I highly recommend “Shadow of the Vampire,” which is a fictional account of the making of “Nosferatu.” Very spooky!

  24. Spike – no question about it! πŸ™‚

  25. Dracula… isn’t he everyone’s favourite?

  26. Vampires! I love them. Even have a daylily named Nosferatu, from the original silent movie. Love the cardi. Thanks for designing it up to larger sizes. πŸ™‚

  27. Here’s my entry:
My favorite tv vampire is Eric Northman from True Blood. He’s super sexy and its difficult to tell is he’s good or bad. Not usually into blinds but he’s got a great body and this incredibly great stare. Yum yum!

  28. Kiefer Sutherland in Lost Boys- which I guess was my high school’s version of Twilight πŸ™‚

  29. Your cardi looks amazing and the book looks like it has a ton of fun knits!!!!

  30. For favorite movie vampire, I’ll have to go with Max Schreck as Nosferatu — very creepy! Frank Langella as Dracula comes a close second for looking fabulous in a cravat and cape. Favorite TV vampire is Spike from Buffy — the episodes with him and Drusilla were my favorites. And my favorite book vampire is Silas from The Graveyard Book.

I hope you enjoy wrapping up in that lace cardi now that the cooler weather is finally here!

  31. I don’t really have any favourite vampire characters, but my favourite vampire television series is Ultraviolet, an obscure British miniseries that never actually uses the word ‘vampires’.

  32. My favorite vampire of all time has got to be Christopher Lee as Count Dracula. He used to scare the bejesus out of me when I was a kid. I would always look away from the television set everytime he would look into the camera ready to put someone under his spell.

  33. Oh my favourite is hands down – Tom Cruise’s Lestat. It’s funny, I never really cared for Tom Cruise until he played Lestat – and even now I still don’t really like him unless he’s being evil.
I guess I just like the bad boy vampires – no wishwashy, tortured souls for me.
Althought Gary Oldman also makes a pretty hot Dracula
.-= Valerie´s last blog ..Tuxdate the Third =-.

  34. I’ve always been a Blade fan, but I think Mina Harker from the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen would come in first,. She’s got a great attitude and a fabulous wardrobe to boot!

  35. I’ve not been “bitten” (sorry, kids; it had to be said) by the vampire-craze bug, but I do remember just swooning over Count Vladimir Dracula as portrayed by George Hamilton in “Love at First Bite” (1979). I think my favorite line in the whole movie was “Vith you never a kvickie, alvays a longie.”

  36. Favorite vampire Spike, his the big bad regardless if his helping Buffy and co fight the forces of darkness. He also as a heart for a soulless demon at least according to the Judge character who wanted to kill him because he loved Dru.
    .-= Melissa´s last blog ..It’s been awhile =-.

  37. Buffy, eh? Maybe we have the same favorite vampire. Mine is Angel. Hands down. its like other TV vampires don’t even exist….

  38. Oh, my favourite has to be Eric from True Blood! I’ve read all the books, and seen the first two seasons of the show, and he is sexy, passionate, confident, and caring. Mmmm…. πŸ˜‰ Thanks for the contest Wendy!

  39. My favorite vampire is Angel, from the Buffy series. And he was the original “good vampire,” before Twilight or True Blood came along. (and he wasn’t too bad to look at either)

  40. I don’t think I can qualify for this giveaway because I really don’t like vampire movies nor books…

  41. wow! i’d heard of the book and faced it with the same suspicion, but the way you describe it sounds wonderful. and that HOODIE! i’ve been looking everywhere and haven’t been able to find anything perfect… i’d need to see a better picture, but that might be it!

so i’ll let you know that henry fitzroy from blood ties (the tv show, sure, but also the books!) is my favourite vampire. he’s got the tortured past, and is mostly a good vampire–but he has no sympathy about feeding off people, and he says it quite plain: “i have killed. i will kill again. it’s who i am.” not fluffy! and it helps that the man is a beauty. πŸ™‚

thanks for sharing this wonderful giveaway!
.-= captainsharmie´s last blog ..not dead- just busy =-.

  42. I love that hoodie pattern & would very much like to win the book! Your lace edged cardigan is beautiful.
.-= PlainJane´s last blog ..Grandma Who Dances With Crochet Hooks =-.

  43. Lovely cardi! My fav is Tom Cruise’s Lestat.

  44. I hope you all won’t shun me for saying it, but my favorite is Edward. Before you start huffing and puffing about how real vampires don’t sparkle, I think the reason I love him the most is because Twilight focuses on the human emotions of teenage love and angst. Maybe I’m a hopeless romantic, but I have yet to see a love story this powerful told through vampires!
    .-= Alex Klein´s last blog ..Cordoba =-.

  45. I was skeptical too, but I’ve heard lots of good things about this book.

My favorite tv vampire is definitely Spike. Great sarcastic sense of humor, good looking, and to top it all off, the actor (James Marsters) is a genuinely nice guy. That alone makes me love his character that much more. =)

  46. Love the lace cardigan! I think my favorite vampire would have to be Lestat, from the Anne Rice novels, followed closely by The Count from Sesame Street! πŸ˜‰
    .-= Amanda´s last blog ..A Hurried Update =-.

  47. Favorite vampire? That’s tough! I’m quite the fan of Spike – he’s tough and funny and passionate. Also a huge fan of The Count on Sesame Street – educational and kinda funny even now. I suppose those are my favorite 2 vampires… ah ah ah ah (sorry, couldn’t resist)
    .-= CatieP´s last blog ..Gluten-Free Cinnamon Buns =-.

  48. The only vampire I could ever call a “favorite”… Barnabas Collins from Dark Shadows. And I can’t think of why. Looking at photos now it’s not that he was all that good looking. But he fascinated the 10 year old who snuck into the living room to watch the show (Mom had said “No… it was too scary”. She was right, but that didn’t stop me!).
    .-= KathleenC´s last blog ..Maryland recap =-.

  49. Spike from Buffy – how could it be anyone else?!
.-= Rhian Drinkwater´s last blog ..Super sock swap! =-.

  50. First off, that’s a beautiful cardigan! Love it, just like I love the sock patterns in your books.

There are so many great TV and movie vampires. There’s Angel, Spike, Darla, and Drusilla from the Buffy ‘verse, and I’d be hard put to choose one of them. But deep in my heart I have a soft spot for Jerry Dandrige (AKA Chris Sarandon in Fright Night). Love that movie and that vampire.

  51. I like a few Blade, From Dusk till Dawn and of course the original Dracula.

  52. Kate lathrop says:

wow – LOVE the cardi! I can’t wait for the pattern!

Hmm- favorite vampire – that would have to be Spike – what can I say I like the bad boys!

  53. My favorite vampires are from my childhood: Count Chocula and Sesame Street’s Count von Count. Mostly because I’m not scared of them!

  54. my favorite vampire is either Eric from True Blood or Spike from Buffy.

  55. Got to be Frank Langella in the 1979 version of Dracula.
I still wish someone would make (good) film versions of my favorite vampire character, Le Comte de St.-Germain, as written by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro.
.-= Claire´s last blog ..Le Roi est mort =-.

  56. My favorite is Eric from True Blood. What can I say, I go for witty, 6’5″ norse vampire gods. Gotta keep the scandinavian blood going!

  57. My fave vamp is Spike from Buffy The Vampire Slayer. I can’t really say why, but there’s just something about that character that makes him very attractive to me. It could be the British sarcasm thing he’s got going on…

  58. 1. Ms. Harker, from “League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”
2: Only 14.5K miles? My car had that when I bought it 4.5 years ago, and I am nearly up to 120K miles, notwithstanding the fact that I rode the train to work for two of those years. this is Texas. “Nearby” is a relative concept πŸ˜‰
.-= Lynn´s last blog ..Apples- running amok! =-.

  59. Stacy and the rugrats says:

If we are talking TV or movie, then I would say Spike. However, Jean-Claude from the Anita Blake books totally kills any other vampire πŸ˜‰

  60. Victoria Maguinness says:

I saw this book at Borders a couple of days ago and I felt the skepticism as you did, but couldn’t help but take a quilty peak! I found it had some interesting ideas. My daughter and I read the “Twlight” series together. We found the books much more entertaining then the movies. That said I must confess my favorite vampire TV charactor would have to be Barnabas Collins from the “Dark Shadows”. These days the kids would find it “cheesy” but it was really ahead of its time!

  61. Jean-claude from anita blake is also my favorite but Eric Northman from tv’s True blood isn’t too far behind!

  62. When you asked for a favorite vampire the first thing that popped into my mind was “Dark Sahdows” and Barnabas – something realy different for TV at the time — but do love the way Ann Rice has woven Lestat through her novels — have them all.

Love the cardi and can’t wait for the pattern. Your touch of lace at the edges makes this a very versatile wardrobe item.

  63. Your cardigan is beautiful! Seems like you knitted that up so fast!

My favorite vampire is the Count from Sesame Street. I hope he counts. He’s sweet and not scary. πŸ™‚
.-= Christina´s last blog ..I finish a sock and have tea with Davey =-.

  64. Freya in Californeya says:

I love your cardigan. Can I have it?

I’m partial to Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Sexy, bad boy all the way.

  65. Love the cardiagan…the color is perfect and will look really nice on you…

  66. I’m going with Angel from Buffy…gotta love a hot vampire with a conscience. I’m not a huge fan of any of the tv/movie vampires, but he’s my favorite.

    BTW, nice cardi as well!

  67. meryl w aaron-stewart says:

i did like george hamilton in “love at first bite”, but i also love old films, so i must mention that i also like the classic “dracula” films as well. as i give blood every 2 months here in meriden, CT, & i always bring my knitting project du jour with me, i think that a project from this book would be appropriate to bring with me next time i donate blood in october. then i could wave the book around & tell them about your great blog!!

  68. The cardi came out great!

I am more of a fan of the book vamps but Eric from True Blood is close to his literary persona.
    .-= Cayli´s last blog ..Been Busy =-.

  69. The Cardi looks amazing! I wish I had the umph to get a sweater finished. Ha ha ha!

My favorite vampire has to be Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He was hilarious!

  70. … looking forward to getting the lace edged cardi pattern …

  71. This is a tough one. I think my current favorite vampire is Damon from The Vampire Diaries. The actor seems to be having the best time being deliciously evil and funny.

  72. The cardigan is gorgeous. Can’t wait for the pattern.

I prefer all my vampires in literary form. I’ve read Ann Rice, Stephanie Meyers, the Evernight books, the Sookie Stackhouse series, and the original Dracula. Somehow my imagination always seems to be better than the film results!

  73. Helene Harris says:

omg – Mick St. John (Alex O’Loughlin) in Moonlight. Loved him. So hot, sexiest most caring sweet vampire (and his best friend wasn’t too bad either but much nastier). Duncan McLeod (Adrian Paul) in Highlander would have been a great vampire but i don’t think that was about blood, just living forever. Thanks for such a fine question to reply to! Best wishes.

  74. lol, i think i am old school as well, Brad Pitt & Tom Cruise!
.-= turtle´s last blog ..Did i miss summer Feels like fall! =-.

  75. It would have to be Bela Lugosi. When I was a child, I can remember seeing him in the horror flicks as Dracula. I still think he is the best because he had all the traits that, I thought, a vampire should have without all the special effects. He was scary as he was.

  76. The cardi is gorgeous πŸ™‚
The book looks entertaining – something certainly my teenage daughter would like and could find stuff for me to make her.

    Happy Fall!

  77. I would love the book. I was always a fan of vampire books and movies and still think one of the scariest books I have ever read was “Salem’s Lot” by Stephen King. I know it’s been made into TV series a couple of times but they just didn’t compare to the book.

  78. My favorite vampire is Spike from the Buffy TV series. Reason: purely because I think he’s a cutie!

  79. I have to say, I’m also surprised by the niceness of this book! Very cool!

  80. Nice low mileage on the car… lucky that you have public transportation out there so you don’t have to use it all the time… here in Texas we have to drive everywhere.. :/

That vampire knits book looks cool!

  81. Oh Brad Pitt as a vampire is and was my absolute favorite vampire in “Interview with the Vampire.” I’d let him bite me. πŸ™‚

  82. For sure Alex O’Loughlin from Moonlight. Now on Hiawii 5 0. That says it all!!
Would love to have the book.

  83. Favorite vampire.. hard to just pick one, but I do like Bella from Twilight, watching the process involved in her becoming a vampire!

  84. My favorite vampire is Claire Radcliff from the tv show The Gates. I love her because she drinks blood out of a wine glass. She is one classy vamp.

  85. Hmmm, I was going to put Barnabas Collins or Lestat too, but then I remembered the wonderful vampire characters in the Dr Who (Tom Baker) episode, “State of Decay”. Don’t remember the character names, but they were OH so fabulous! Remember how he killed the giant evil vampire in the ground by flying a spaceship straight up, flipping it straight down, then through the ground? What an incredibe episode! Almost as good as “Vampires in Venice” with Matt Smith, but this was so much more Gothic.

  86. I saw this book in Ravelry last week and had a look at the patterns. The capelet did catch my eye.

Angel has got to be my favourite TV vampire. He has a soul – try and top that! plus he’s dark, handsome and broody. Rawr!
.-= Jocelyn´s last blog ..This Little Something =-.

  87. The cardigan looks lovely and I’m jealous of your speed! My favorite TV vampire is Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. His sarcastic wit had me from his first scene.

  88. I have several and it so hard to pick between them.

I love Spike from Buffy the most-he was given some the best lines especially when he said he was Love’s B*tch.

I also liked Cameron from Kindred the Embraced – first time I saw Titus Welliver and OH MY.

    .-= Kim´s last blog ..Yarn Buying =-.

  89. Definitely Eric Northman. Ruthless, intelligent, and sexy as all getout.

    LOVE the finished cardigan!

  90. For TV/Movie Vamp, I’d have to say Eric Northman- there are a lot of literary vampires I prefer (including Eric in the books), but TV-wise I’d have to say him. πŸ˜€ And the cardi is super-cute, AND going to be in my size (which is rare) so I am definitely looking forward to the pattern. πŸ˜€
.-= Emily´s last blog ..Back from the Dead with a knitting meme! =-.

  91. Armand from Interview with a Vampire is my favorite. Antonio Banderas did a great job playing a sleek and sophisticated character.

  92. Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel… So yumtastic!

  93. Love the lace cardi! Spike is my favorite because James Marsters is an amazing actor.

  94. My favorite is George Hamilton from Love at First Bite. Susan St James says “Are you biting me? Oh, how kinky!” πŸ™‚

  95. I think I’m going to have to go with Eric, from True Blood. He’s sneaky, smart, really hot and while he wants you to think that he’s a bad person, he’s really quite sweet.

  96. the new cardi is super, I’d love to get the book, my girls are vampire fanatics!
.-= Vicki´s last blog ..well I just need to knit this!! =-.

  97. Please put my name in for the book… I’m a HUGE vampire geek πŸ™‚

  98. Carlise Cullen from the Twilight series, but I would have to say, I more of a book fan of Carlise’s, rather than the movie.
.-= picadrienne´s last blog ..10 on Tuesday How to Celebrate your Birthday =-.

  99. Hmmm, I’d have to say my favourite t.v. vampire is Spike; no angst, just bad, bad, bad! πŸ˜€ Love the new cardi! Book looks fun!

  100. Bill Compton, definitely…well, maybe Eric the Viking. Can you tell I’m a True Blood fan? In both cases, they are well-developed characters with well-developed bodies. Sigh. And they’ve got great fangs. (ahem.)
