Lace Edge Cardi and a Giveaway

I finished up the knitting on my Lace Edge Cardi on Thursday, and my Friday night knitting in fron of the tv project consisted of the seaming and neckband. Ta-da!

I used just under 4 skeins of Tempted Lovely Grrl yarn in a colorway that Stacy dyed to my specifications — a lovely milk chocolate. I knit this cardi with a US size 5 needle at a gauge of 6 stitches and 7.5 rows to the inch. I ave written up the pattern to fit 5 sizes — finished chest circumferences of 36, 40, 44, 48, and 52 inches. The pattern will be available very soon.

I am extremely pleased with how this cardi turned out. It is soft and drapey, just the way I wanted it. I was originally going to do i-cord ties at the beginning of the v-neck, but changed my mind. I made the size 44″ for myself because I wanted it a bit oversized. If I want to fasten in closed, I will use a shawl pin. But if/when you make the pattern you cold do the i-cord ties or button loops if you want.

I of course started a new project, but I’ll talk about that tomorrow.

Vampire Knits

On Friday I received a review copy of the new book Vampire Knits: Projects to Keep You Knitting From Dusk Until Dawn by Genevieve Miller from my publisher, Potter Craft.

Gotta tell you , I approached this book with a fair amount of skepticism. But I was very pleasantly surprised. The projects, all vampire-themed, are very cute and clever, and are in a wide range of experience levels. Both beginner and more experienced knitters will find things they can knit in here. And there is a great variety of things, ranging from very functional, like a lovely hoodie, to fun and quirky — bottle cozies for your vampire (and other) beverages.

There are 28 projects in all, including a very nice sweater suitable for a man, a child’s pullover, a gorgeous lace shrug, sexy lace mitts and cabled mittens, a hoodie, a cape, a pillow, bags, and more.

Here’s a few of my favorite projects. A cute hoodie:

A sweet feminine capelet:

A tote bag:

And bottle cozies!

The book is beautifully designed and has a Victorian feel to it. There are cute little side notes throughout that impart vampire lore, as well as a couple of quizzes and some very useful information on getting blood out of your clothing and yarn.

I was very tempted to keep the review copy to myself, but decided it would be much nicer to share.

Who wants my review copy? Here’s what you gotta do:

Leave a comment to this blog entry and tell me who your favorite movie or tv vampire is and tell me why. Leave a comment by 4:00pm eastern time Wednesday, September 29, and I will draw a winner at random from those who followed the directions properly. I’ll post the winning entry in my Wednesday blog post, ad at that time will tell you my favorite tv or movie vampire.

This has nothing to do with anything, but here is my 2004 Honda Civic’s odometer reading as of this morning:

I bought this car new in February 2004. Proof that I don’t drive very much! πŸ˜‰

And here is what Lucy has planned for today:

It’s a dark rainy day, so that looks good to me. There is a Buffy marathon on tv, so I’m good to go!

  1. Put me in to win the book – and I love your new cardi.

  2. hmm …. this is a tough one. I am going to have to go with Spike from buffy, because I love the deep(as in story deep) connection between him and buffy.

  3. Barnabas Collins is the vamp for me! I got hooked on Dark Shadows when I was 8!

  4. I’d have to say Barnabas Collins from Dark Shadows–I remember being thrillingly scared to death every time that came on when I was little. I used to sleep every night with the covers all the way up over my neck!

  5. Rebecca Robertson says:

My favorite movie vampire is Lestat from Interview with a Vampire because the story he tells is so heartbreaking.

  6. I would have to say Bela Lugosi. He was a very scary vampire and yet did a good job when playing in Abbott & Costello version. I love the hooded things pictured here.

  7. I was going to say Barnabas Collins from Dark Shadows, but I have to admit, George Hamilton from Love at first Bite was much more fun.

  8. Beautiful cardi!
Of course I love edward cullen πŸ™‚
And I have seen this book around and really want it!

  9. Spike from Buffy. Love those bad boys even though they suck.

  10. My favorite TV vampire has to be Angel from Buffy. He’s so pretty. But Stephan and Damon from the Vampire Diaries are a close second.

Happy to hear someone else enjoys knitting while watching Buffy marathons πŸ™‚

  11. My friend Cirila designed the cover sweater! πŸ™‚

I think my favorite Vampire story is still Twilight… It’s very “young” but it was good junk food for the brain! πŸ™‚

  12. Mmm, Eric Northman. He’s just my style – hot, broody, dry sense of humour.
.-= Meg´s last blog ..Things that really annoy me =-.

  13. My favorite TV or Movie vampire is Grandpa Munster from the Munsters. He’s the first vampire I ever saw…good memories.

  14. lovely!

  15. Ooo! Ooo! Pick me, please!

  16. AnitaMayKnit says:

Without a doubt, Barnabus Collins of Dark Shadows. At 6 years old, I thought he was the scariest, but I was so taken in I couldn’t take my little hazel eyes off the TV! True campy fun to watch now. ; )

  17. Amanda Taff says:

Hi, you knit beautifully! My favorite vampire is Mitch from Moonlight, he is so handsome and I love the tortured character he plays.

  18. Can I still enter even if I don’t have a favorite vampire? I watch TV and movies about as much as you drive.
.-= Ruth´s last blog ..A bit of the random =-.

  19. I’m a little embarrassed to admit it but my favorite vampire has to be Edward Cullen. It’s not just because of who they cast to play him, but how the character was written. There is nothing he wouldn’t do for his true love to protect her and keep her safe, even from herself at times. He’s completely passionate about her but restrains himself for the timing to be right, because he wants her life to be better than he believes he can provide. He has his dark side with his temper and can be very dangerous to people that threaten the one he loves, yet with that temper he never lashes out. It’s hard to explain the balance, but there is just something so intriguing about him that reminds me so much of my own boyfriend that just endears him to me.

  20. My favorite vampire has to be Spike form Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I’m not entirely sure why, but Angel was never really my cup of tea. Spike, on the other hand, really rocked.

  21. I’m going with Eric Northman on this one!

  22. Hey Wendy!

My favorite TV Vampire is Spike from Buffy. I like smartarses in black leather! And also he was kind of real. I mean, he didn’t try to be a hero, or noble or anything. He was like “okay, here I am, sorta bad guy, but hey, that’s how it goes…”

My favorite book vampire is a toss up between Kisten from Kim Harrison’s novels or Rehvenge from J.R. Wards BDB books.

  23. Although I’m not into the Twilight series, I was a huge Dark Shadows fan back in the day. I’d love to win the book and maybe make that cute hooded capelette

  24. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, True Blood, Twilight, Being Human–I am a fan of all of these vampire-containing TV shows and their corresponding books (if they have them), so for me it’s a toss-up between Angel from Buffy and Angel or Mitchell, new vampire on the block from the BBC Being Human. Both fantastic, dark, moody, and gorgeous undead men!

  25. My favorite vamps of stage and screen are Spike and the rest of the gang from Buffy and Edward. They’re just pretty, what else can I say? But my favorite, favorite, favorite vampire story to date is Sunshine by Robin McKinley. McKinley writes so beautifully and the story is completely engaging. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes to read.

And a book of vampy patterns? Swoon! Squee! Pick me, pick me, pick me!

Seriously, thank you, Wendy, for your generosity and always interesting blog.

  26. Lovely cardi! I’d love to see it modeled by you, too:)

Favorite vampire – I’m not generally into vampires but did for some reason like being scared by Barnabas Collins on “Dark Shadows” when I was a kid. I really liked Mick St. John on “Moonlight” but my favorite vamp is probably The Count on Sesame Street!

  27. I would love to have a chance for this book. My favorite Vampire would have to be Amy, from the book I am reading right now. It’s The Passage by Justin Cronin. I am only on page 275 out of 766 pages. Whew it’s a big book

  28. That hoodie looks adorable. I have seen some of the projects on rav, it looks to be an awesome book! So envious that you get to review all these awesome books for your blog!

  29. I had just seen an ad for the Vampire Knits book a few minutes before I read your post. I would have thought it would not be something I’m interested in, but you changed my mind. Please enter me in the contest and thanks for telling us about the book!

  30. My favorite has to be Bela Lugosi in the movie Dracula.
I love the classic black and whites!

  31. The vampire with a soul; Angel on Buffy. He is the reason I have a male cat named Angel; he’s beautiful, brooding and always just a hair away from going all claws and fangs out.

  32. My favorite vampire is still Bela Lugosi, mainly because I like the old movies and he just epitomizes the classic vampire look.

  33. The book looks cool! My fav vampire would have to be Spike from BTVS, but Barnabas Collins was the original favorite from back in the day.

  34. Angel because David Boreanaz was hot. Definitely on my eye candy diet.

  35. My favorite vampire? Probably Arucard from Hellsing (the anime) because he is completely deranged and un-human πŸ˜› I guess I don’t really appreciate the typical vampire main character who is still struggling with losing their humanity and learning to accept or reject what they’ve become; they don’t really seem to be vampires yet at that point.

I’m surprised you actually found things in that book–I, too, had kind of written it off as being full of hokey things I’d probably never wear, but that hoodie looks nice πŸ™‚ I may have to flip through it in a bookstore at some point, since I’m pretty sure I’m not winning anything.

  36. Spike from BTVS, of course. It’s the cheekbones and the way he would say “pet.”

  37. Debbie R. Barnett says:

My vampire obsession started way back with the daytime soap, Dark Shadows. I’ll admit I am old enough to remember it, but young enough it gave me nightmares.
I was passing by the book Twilight until one of daughters-in-law gave me a copy for the plane trip back from northern Alberta. I now have all the books and movies and have had this book on my wish lists since it’s conception.

  38. Margaret S. says:

Eric from True Blood, and I loved Spike in Buffy. Maybe it’s a blond vampire thing? πŸ™‚

  39. Always love your work. love your cat. would been nice to win…………………………………… Happy knitting

  40. I have an 11 year old daughter who is ALL ABOUT the vampire! (Jacob, of course)
Thanks for an opportunity to win!

  41. Thank you for showing the book!

  42. This was a tough question! For tv and movies, I would probably say my favorite is Spike from both the Buffy series and the Angel series. I’ve chosen him for a couple reasons:
*In most of Buffy he’s a hopelessly inept bad guy. No matter how hard he tries, it never turns out well, and you can’t help but feel a little sorry for him.
*His sarcasm and sense of humor is fantastic. I could always rely on a scene with him to make me laugh.
*Once he joined the Angel cast, you got the best of everything. He was a good guy used to being a bad guy, still figuring it all out, you got the antagonism between him and Angel, the awkwardness between him and Harmony, the sweetness between him and Fred. And through it all that crazy knock you flat sarcasm.
*British accent. Need I say more?

So that’s my 2 cents. The book looks fabulous, and I’ve seen a pic of some stockings in there that I will have to make!

  43. I would love to win Vampire Knits – my all time favorite vampire is Bela Lugosi – Dracula was the first vampire movie I ever saw and to me one of the most memorable.

  44. My favorite vampire is Grandpa from the Munsters. I love the little capelet!

  45. My favorite t.v. vampire is Nikola Tesla from Sanctuary. Btw, I think the new cardigan is wonderful!

  46. My favorite vampire is Grandpa from the Munsters, and OOPS! I forgot to tell you why! Because I wish he was MY grandpa – he had great spells, and was always cooking up a new experiment! Still love the capelet!

  47. Would love to win the copy of Vampire Knits: My favorite vampire would have to be the old black/white film with Bela Lugosi as Dracula. There was just something really sinister about the old film. Loved it. Hi Lovely Lucy!

  48. Love the cardi and the color! My favorite vampire is Edward Dalton (played by Ethan Hawke) in the movie Daybreakers. I love the fact that he was a “good” vampire. It helped that Ethan Hawke played that role too. Nothing like a good looking vampire!

  49. That book intrigues me!! I’m a huge fan of True Blood and of Erik, like a lot of people mentioned!!

    Your cardi looks great!!

  50. Definitely Eric from True Blood, because he’s gorgeous.

  51. It’s always hard for me to pick a SINGLE vampire that I like, because I LOVE vampire stories. Though I’ve read mostly books, film/tv wise it’s quite a hard decision.
I’m partial to Eric Northman in TrueBlood and Lestat in Interview/Queen of the Damned, Spike from Buffy is also quite the hottie….

but out of all of the shows or films, I’d have to say that I will always have a soft spot for Gary Oldman as Dracula in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. That is by far my favourite love-story ever. It doesn’t hurt that when Gary plays a younger Drac, he is oh-so-sexy-lexy.

  52. I love your cardigan Wendy! It looks amazing!

You can never go wrong with Buffy, I think I’ve watched the series a few times because it’s just that good. Hope you enjoyed your day!

If I would have to pick my favorite vampire, it would either be Blade (the good butt kicking vamp) or the Twilight series (I prefer the books over the movies actually)

  53. My favorite has always been Spike from Buffy because he is quite snarky and is a good foil for the rest of the Buffy crew.

  54. Hi, Ok, so I have so many “favorite” vampires, it is really hard to choose. One of my favorites is Ivy from the Rachel Morgan series by Kim Harrison. She is tortured by the fact that she is a vampire but makes up for it by hunting evil, I know, I know almost every vampire does this these days. She also has an amazing wardrobe in the book. I also like the vampires from the Anita Blake series. Jean-Claude, Asher all of them, she describes them so beautifully and the fact that they are who they are and live with it and their human lover is just great.

  55. Way back when there was a soap opera called Dark Shadows and Barnabas Collins was the best vampire EVER… atleast for me, lol. I’d love the book to make my granddaughters happy, might even find something for myself.

  56. My fave vampire is Eric from True Blood. He is nice to look at, good for Sookie, and nice to look at. Did I say that twice?
.-= Jen´s last blog ..Cooking in the yarnhoardin household =-.

  57. My favorite vampire? I can only have one? I guess it has to be Angel. Why? He fell in love with Buffy & then…at the end of that one episode, he is there again–& I just melted.

  58. Mick St. John in Moonlight a series from a few years ago. Alex O’Loughlin played him and he is just plain sexy. Now we can watch him on Hawaii 5-0.

  59. I’m another fan of True Blood’s Eric Northman. I like the glint in his eye. And I’m just a sucker (har har) for the bad-boy-with-a-heart-of-gold thing.

  60. Alice Cullen – she is fairy cute.
.-= Karrie Yancey´s last blog ..Hello- Goodbye August =-.

  61. Eileen Bunn says:

The cardigan (both yours and the one in the book) are great. Please put my name in for the book!

  62. Jeanette McKinney says:

Are you kidding? my favorite vampire movie is “Lost Boys” from the 80’s. Kiefer Sutherland as a vampire–yummy. I even had the poster on my bedroom wall. It took a long time to eat Chinese noodles without thinking about Kiefer Sutherland. My ex-husband and I joke about knocking before entering each other’s home: “Silly boy, don’t you know that you should never invite a vampire into your home?!”

  63. Love the cardi and the new book. I would also have to go with Brad Pitt & Tom Cruise in An interview with a Vampire: TheVampire Cronicles. But I certainly need to check out some of the others mentioned here!

  64. The new cardi is gorgeous! Love it! Hmmm, I’m a little punchy about vampires, but I love the patterns – I’d had to say I still get chills from Barnabas Collins, of Dark Shadows (does that date me?) but my favorite vampire has to be Grandpa Munster. Teehee

  65. Favourite Vamp is definitely Angel. Love all that brooding and tortured soul thing he has going on. It also helps that he’s absolutely gorgeous.

  66. I’ve got to go with Spike from Buffy. Because, well, have you SEEN him? Yum.

  67. Ahhh, put my comment for drawing on wrong post. Ooops! Well, now it’s fixed.
.-= Lorraine´s last blog ..Gah! Record-breaking gap in posts! =-.

  68. Fun giveaway! I was a bit skeptical about that book too, so it was great to see some of the patterns and hear your thoughts. I never saw Buffy when it was on TV, but have been catching up recently through Netflix instant watching – which means that my favorite vampire these days is Angel…

  69. Oh man. . . I have been disappointed in most of the film/tv vampires. . . Like I saw mentioned, Armand from Interview is probably one of my favorites. And Keifer in The Lost Boys. . .

  70. That’s a hard one. I’ve never been big on vampires, but I have to say those patterns look great. I haven’t seen any of the recent things, didn’t like the Gary Oldman movie, and was scared of The Count as a child! I did like Sting in a vampire movie I can’t remember. (Actually, I just like Sting.) I also have a memory of a really funny vampire movie as a child, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t Love at First Bite. Is that enough to qualify me for the drawing?

  71. Sommer Greer says:

My favorite vampire is Angel from the Buffy series. He was my first (vampire) crush as a teenager. I loved that he was ba but good. And of course, the actor, David Boreanez (sp?), is super hot.

  72. Barnabas Collins! I watched Dark Shadows as a kid and was scared stiff. Seeing it now is a bit sad, especially when one notices the microphones hanging down.

  73. I would love to win the book! Thanks so much for your generosity! Debbie in Alaska

  74. Eric Northman of course! My friend has a pattern in this book – I am so excited for her!

  75. Depending if I’m in the mood to be scared or turned on, I have different favorites. I’m not at all impressed with the latest batch of vampires (or the whole obsession in general) but I do have nostalgic thoughts about a couple of old vampires. If I’m in the mood to be scared by a vampire, the winner hands down is Nosferatu from the old silent movie. It scares the crap out of me just thinking about him. If I’m in the mood to see a hot, sexy vampire there is a tie. Both Spike and Angel from the old Buffy the Vampire Slayer series (and Angel) were serious hotties. Much more interesting that Mr. Morose (i.e. Robert P.). Maybe I’m just too old. Well, my teenage girls hate him too so maybe not. haha

  76. Ahh – favorite vampire is Spike from Buffy series. Gotta love the other vamp with a soul, and he earned his redemption. I also think Spike was Buffy’s true love, not Angel. Well, waaay too much info.

  77. I must admit that I am Team Jacob… who can resist those abs?!?! But I’m not sure that counts as a vampire… πŸ™‚ Love the new cardi!!

  78. Oh, I saw that book on a different blog and thought that it looked very interesting! πŸ™‚

  79. I can never decide. I love Stefan and Damon from the Vampire Diaries. In one scene I’ll like one more, in another scene it will be the other brother. Could I have them both maybe? Love the cardi BTW
.-= Trudi´s last blog it that time already =-.

  80. I would love to win this book.
Thank you for being to giving to all of us.

  81. I just looked over this book at the store last night. I expected it to be another fluff book about vampires, but was pleasently surprised. The projects looked very well thought out, and although there were simple designs, none of them looked like rank beginner projects.

I don’t know if he’ll count since he’s technically a day walker, but I have to pick Blade anyway. He is just so bad@ss!

If he doesn’t count, I choose Selene from the Underworld movies. She is cool as a cucumber, romantic in a weird sort of way, and completely effective.

  82. I think my favorite vampire was Nick in Moonlight. He didn’t want to be a vampire, was still fairly young for one, and tried very hard to be a hero. And he did Not sparkle. I also like the shortlived TV series The Kindred, but those were completely different vampires.

  83. Definitely would like to win. Also, I’m with Lucy, good day to nap while it rains.
.-= Diane´s last blog ..Im Peachless- Just Peachless =-.

  84. Natalie Doyle-Hennin says:

The Count on Sesame Street, of course. Not only is he cute, but he’d be able to help keep track of rows and stitches without losing focus. I’m down for The Count.

  85. When Dracula with Frank Langella came out I was about 24-25 years old. I thought he was HOT and would’ve totally fallen under his spell. I would’ve gladly given him my neck if it hadn’t included all that becoming one of the undead and all that junk – LOL!!

  86. Cannot wait for that cardi pattern!! I so want to make!! Lucy has the right idea for a rainy day. And the book looks super neat!!! Lots of fun ideas from what you showed us!!

  87. Oh man, so many choices! And of course reading what other people had to say reminded me of vampires that I hadn’t seen in ages. But I have to decide, it’s not TV or a movie version, but my favorite vampire is Dracula performed by the Colorado Ballet. 2.5 hours of gorgeous dancers in a creepy gothic setting. Very nice. They perform it every year, it’s like the Nutcracker for fall. Dark, sensuous, thrilling. I’ll take it over Nutcracker any day.

  88. My favourite vampire? That’s a hard one since I’m more into wizards, mages and sorcerers than vampires….
I’ll have to say my favourite one would be Angel from Buffy. I like both Spike and Angel, but I like Angels actor by himself a lot and in other roles too (Booth!), so it has to be him.

    Thanks for having this giveaway!

  89. i’d have to go with Damon from Vampire Diaries. he’s a bad boy and the naughty older brother. *swoon*

  90. Barnabas Collins on the old “Dark Shadows” soap opera. Definitely. πŸ™‚
.-= Pam Asberry´s last blog ..Four Word Self Help =-.

  91. my fave tv vamp was Grandpa from The Munsters. I never liked to be scared but Grandpa made me laugh.

  92. Debbi Downs says:

My all time favorite vampire is Lestat from Anne Rice’s novels (not the Tom Cruise character) because he is clever and sexy and rude and sarcastic and vulnerable and strong. As far as vampires on the screen…I really loved Louis in Interview with a Vampire. Brad Pitt played him well I thought, and I loved the scene when he first saw through his “vampire eyes”. *sigh*
The cardi looks great! And I am with you on loving that fall is here…bring on the chill!!! πŸ™‚

  93. Wow!! Lots of vampire lovers. My favorite
Would have to be Tom Cruise as Lestst. Although I have always loved vampires. Would love to have the vampire shawl book, so please put my name into the drawing.

  94. My favorite vampire is the late great Bela Lugosi. Not very scarry as vampires go, but that accent and the classic wardrobe cover all the requisites!

  95. I grew up loving monster movies and my first vampire love was for “Dark Shadows”. Vampires are people too!
.-= bluetoespinner´s last blog ..Nothing to show- but weve been busy =-.

  96. Love your cardi! My favorite movie vampire would have to be edward from the twilight movies. Gotta love a sensitive and sexy vampire!

  97. Your cardigan turned out beautiful! I wish I had the patience to knit something bigger than a dishcloth!!

My favorite vampire is, without a doubt, Spike from the Buffy TV series. He was delicious!!
.-= Jan Larson´s last blog ..Party on- Mr Raven =-.

  98. Beverly (db81971) says:

Honestly, I’m not a real vampire fan, but Tom Cruise in An interview with a Vampire. Tom Cruise in ANYTHING is always good. Nice eye-candy!

I LUV the hoodie from that book; it would definitely be my next project!

  99. Lynn Olsson says:

Real old school – Dracula. He’s scary and creepy – Personally, I don’t like all the friendly, sweet modern day imitations.

Thannks for the chance to win the pattern book.

  100. My favorite vampire is actually from a japanese show called Vampire Knight, named Hanabusa Aido. There’s no real specific reason why I like him, he’s just one of those characters that endears to you for no good reason whatsoever. It does help that he’s adorably cute one minute and viciously vampire-ific the next I suppose ^_^
