My current work in progress:

Seaforth designed by Alice Starmore, knit in British Breeds 5-ply Guernsey Wool on US 3 needles.

Denim Aran

I was off from work on Friday and was able to finish up my denim aran early that morning. It was a dark and gloomy day, but here are a couple of pre-washing photos. One lying flat:

And one being worn by me — a lousy blurry photo, but check out the length of the sweater (and the sleeves).

I ran it through the washer and dryer twice — hot wash/cold rinse and dried on highest setting. Here it is lying flat:

(Cat included for scale.)

And here it is being modeled by Gwendolyn.

It shrunk just under 20% in length — did not shrink in width.

And yesterday, just because I could, I washed and dried it one more time.

The color on these photos is lighter than reality because once again it was a grey day — not a good day for photos.

The in-the-mirror shot (my hair is not that red):

And a close-up of the top of the sleeve:

And a lying flat detail shot.

To recap, this was knit with 21 skeins of Rowan Denim yarn in the “Memphis” colorway. I used a U.S. size 5 (3.75mm) needle for the whole thing (same size for ribbing and body). It’s my own design and I may write up the pattern but I’ve got a lot of work piled up right now so it won’t be immediately if I do.

Oh and by the way, I love this sweater!

I Live on a Farm Giveaway

The Random Number Generator has done its work. The following individuals have each won a pattern from firefly of I Live on a Farm:

Sarah Warburton, Judy, Rea, Margaret, Gail, Sandy, Marci, Linda, Diane, Barb, and Sharon

And Twyla has won the kit to knit the Biscuit Blanket.

Everyone who has won a prize has been emailed, so if you think one of the above-named people is you, check your email!

Congratulations to all the winners, and a huge thank you to firefly who donated all the prizes. She told me that she read all the comments and appreciated very much all the kind things you had to say about her work.

Lucy sez:

Momma is saving the gift firefly sent me for me to open on Christmas! I can’t wait!

  1. Lovely sweater…I can’t believe how much it shrunk. It looks lovely on you.
Lynda´s last blog post ..I was doing so well

  2. Marsha in CO says:

Your sweater is beautiful. Interesting shrinkage..shorter but not narrower. BTW, you look great.

  3. the aran sweater turned out great – love the ‘slouch’ look, loose fitting not messy — and have purchased a biscuit blanket kit which has been started and can’t wait to give it to a fellow knitter who has grandchildren who always want grandma’s biscuits in the morning. how has the scarf been growing?

  4. just love the sweater!! Please, please, please do a pattern soon!! Or can you send us in the direction of a similar (fit-wise) pattern?? No, wait, I want yours. Love Ms. Lucy too. So patient, at least while you are looking in her direction.

  5. Looks great!

  6. Your sweater is beautiful!

  7. Beautiful sweater–not as bulky as a wool sweater, cables & patterning shown off to perfection, and it fits you well.

  8. Love this sweater. Just what I would love to knit up and wear. Loose slouchy and oh so comfy. If only I had the speed and go of you I could get one done. Unfortunately I work full time, and have fibro which wipes me out. I knit a lot, but just not enough to produce items as quick as you. I seem to get a lot of small items items done. I do have 2 sweaters on the needles for me and maybe some day they will be finished.

  14. Wow! Well done. Absolutely fabulous. Consider me inspired. Thanks!

  15. I love the sweater, but I have a question. If you allow for 20% lengthwise shrinkage, how do you deal with sewing a sleeve cap which is not going to shrink to an armhole that does? What allowances do you make? You must have done it right because your sweater looks great at that point.

  16. What a beautiful sweater, and a beautiful work you have made. It looks like it shrunk up just fine. You should take a few moments to be proud of the work you do. I thank you for being such a good sharer. I am interested in hearing your response to Panhandle Jane.

  17. LOVE LOVE LOVE the denim sweater! looks great on you and reminds me of a hug.

  18. I could not wait to see if I won one of the I live on a farm gifts so I ordered a Biscuit blanket kit. I received it on Saturday and hope to have it knit up as a gift for someone. Then I am gonna make one for myself.
Great sweater, I wish I could wear sweaters. I am always too warm inside when I do wear a sweater.

  19. Very stunning. Even with project monogamy I cannot imagine getting through a skein a day for about three weeks!

  20. Thanks so much for the give-away. I was so thrilled to be one of the winners.
    Your sweater looks fantastic.
I am knitting a cardigan for my MIL for Christmas. It only has 7 skeins in it. I started it 3 weeks ago and have high hope of being done it time. I am knitting the sleeves now and have the rest done, so there is hope. 🙂

  21. I love that sweater its beautiful

  22. I absolutel love your sweater and do hope you have time to write up a pattern. Lucy, you are as adorable as ever!!

  23. Great sweater! I especially like the braided cable. I had a cotton sweater for many years that I finally let go to Goodwill. It wasn’t hand knit but it was about the same color and slouchy. I love the long style that comes below the hipline and covers all my lumps & bumps! Question…I’ve knit with a brand of “denim” yarn that I can’t remember the name but in regards to fading/bleeding. After 2 washes, do you think it will still color your body or undergarments?

  24. I love the sweater! It turned out beautifully.

  25. Love, love, love the sweater. It is comfy, classy, and versatile. The combination of the yarn and the pattern makes it the perfect weekend sweater for everything from lounging at home to a casual lunch. This a pattern worth waiting for.

  26. The sweater looks great, and really comfortable. Awesome job!

  32. I love the sweater! Can I have it? ; ) (I thought it was worth a try. . .)
