My current work in progress:

Seaforth designed by Alice Starmore, knit in British Breeds 5-ply Guernsey Wool on US 3 needles.

Knitting With Ease

When the Diamond Gansey was released from my needles I immediately cast on a new project.

You may recall that a couple of weeks ago I knit a swatch from some Lion Brand Cotton-Ease. I did so because I was curious how it would work for a gansey-type sweater.

As you can see from the photo above, I decided to give it a go.

I am knitting this at a gauge of 4.25 stitches and 7 rows to the inch. I am using a U.S. size 6 needle to achieve this gauge, loose knitter that I am.

The design is another relatively simple one: zig-zags of moss stitch alternating with vertical columns. This is another of my own creations — I charted up the zig-zags and columns for the swatch I knit.

The yarn is quite pleasant to knit. It’s a 50/50 blend of cotton and acrylic and has a bit of stretch and bounce, thanks to that acrylic content. I don’t know how well it will wear, but for now I am very pleased with it and find it a soothing easy knit.

The sweater will be a simple pullover, similar in construction to the Diamond Gansey. It will henceforth be known as the Zig-Zag Gansey.

Here’s a photo I snapped of my odometer last night:

I bought this car on February 28, 2004. Clearly, I do not drive a lot of long distances!

Knitting Event

Registration is now open for Carodan Farm’s SoXperience 2012!

And at home, poor Lucy is exhausted from helping me photograph my work over the weekend.

  1. Wow, that’s a low mileage vehicle! I put about 6000 miles a year on my car & you make me look like I drive cross-country each week!

  2. Egad! My car, bought almost exactly 2 years after yours, has over 100,000 more than yours! čÖé

  3. I knit a Debbie Bliss cabled jacket about 6-7 years ago using pink Cotton-Ease, just like you. It pills a bit, but it’s pretty marvelous in general. My jacket is only beginning to show signs of wear. Yours will be fine, Wendy! čÖé

  4. The diamond gansey turned out great.

  5. Love the zig zag! I love the odometer shot! My car only gets about 3000 miles a year on it too!

  6. I love pink sweaters and shawls! I wish I could knit them as fast as you do.

Wow, low mileage indeed! I put more than that on my car in one year.

  7. Your pattern is very pretty and I think that will wear well. The cotton and the acrylic together is a nice combo. The cotton won’t stretch out because of the acrylic. Can’t wait to see the finished project. I bought my car with 83,000 miles on it in 2007 right now, it has over 204,000 miles on it. Yes that’s right over 100,000 in 5 years. I drive 115 miles a day for work! I wish I could find a job closer to home, the gas is killing me.

Sleep well Miss Lucy. Miss Jasmine sends her best wishes as well

  9. Hope the pattern for the zig zag gansey will be available soon – I would really like to knit one.

  10. My car is a year newer, and has 10 times your mileage čśë But, then, we drive it on a lot of long trips, as well as schlepping the kids to school!

  11. Love the zig-zag design and love the feel of Cotton-ease, love Ms Lucy too and bought my car in June of last year and have 10,000 miles on it — mostly I drive 25 miles a day but that depends on what my grandaughter wants to do like go to the park, she just turned 3 and gets a lot of nana’s knits ——

I’ve had a lot of success with Cotton-Ease. I knit up a little bolero for my daughter a couple of years ago and it hasn’t worn out yet. It still looks good and has its shape after multiple washings and dryings. Your sweater will be beautiful.

  13. Let sleeping kittehs lie! Though I don’t follow this rule myself; if I catch my assistant sleeping I like to play “Stuff On My Cat”! As long as I don’t actually drop the stuff on her, she just goes on sleeping. I should start taking pictures; she’s had most of a drawerful of office supplies piled on, or many pairs of either clean or dirty socks, or all my small knitting tools, etc. At 15 lbs she covers a lot of floor space, and makes a good shelf.

  14. The stitch definition looks really great so far! What kind of wear does LB cotton ease have? I haven’t done much with LB yarns but haven’t been very pleased…a lot of pilling. Like you I am a loose knitter and usually end up going done about 2 needle sizes to get gauge. So perhaps that is part of it. I would hate to put in all that time making a grown up sweater and not be happy with the result. Which also explains why a lot of my experimenting goes into kid/baby stuff!

  15. Your sweater looks pretty, and Lucy does too!

  16. I’ve not tried the Cotton Ease, because I often have a hard time knitting with cotton. I’ll have to give it a try for one of my next projects!

  17. Love the look of the new sweater project. But I’m very partial to Gansey sweaters.

  18. had to smile at your odometer. I had a jeep i had bought new on island when we lived in Hawaii. When i shipped the vehicle off island it was 8 years old and had 8k miles on it. (and i thought i drove it alot! Lots of trips around island teaching diving) The first year on the mainland i put 12k miles on it!

  19. Today must be odometer day! I turned over 20K today and bought my car new 14 months ago. Now if only we had the total of the commute miles on the train *Grin*

  20. Good luck for your new project here!

I can relate to the odometer photo. I bought my Chevy Cavalier new in 2001 and have only 27,800 miles on it. Love the new gansey, and look forward to photos of Lucy each evening.
