Garter Stitch

Lately I’ve done a lot of projects with a garter stitch base. In the past I was not overly fond of garter stitch but I have grown to appreciate it more and more. I’ve done a bunch of garter stitch sideways shawls, and the last of those, Bernadette, will be available for sale soon, probably tomorrow.

I started an extremely simple garter stitch project last night: Basalt. Last week, Sheri at The Loopy Ewe put up for sale the yarn called for in the pattern: The Fibre Company Road to China Light. My knitting buddy Sharon pointed out the Basalt pattern to me, so I ordered up the yarn asap! The pattern calls for 3 different colors: two for the body of the shawl, and one for an applied i-cord edging.

Here are my colors: Apatite, Blue Tourmaline, and Hematite. (I’m using the Hematite for the i-cord.)

Here’s my work so far:

You slip the first stitch of each row, which makes a nice edge for adding the applied i-cord later:

Wendy & Lucy

What Lucy is really doing today:

  1. I love the colors you picked they will go wonderfully together. My latest rescues do both things that Lucy is doing today.
brandi´s last blog post ..Fantastic Fiber Friday-It’s raining cats and dogs!!!!!!

  2. Barb Runcie says:

OMG, that is so funny. Looking forward to next

  3. I’m a huge fan of garter stitch shawls and can’t wait for this newest pattern to be released 🙂

  4. Looking forward to Bernadette and clue #2! The projects I am doing from your blog and Camp Loopy are helping me get ready for Christmas (I don’t like to be overwhelmed during the holiday season). Thanks a bunch!

  5. I really love garter…making a little baby blanket today for a preemie born to a woman in my office.

  6. Are you making the smaller scarf size or the larger wrap size?

  7. I’m so loving your cartoons. This week is so my Siamese Himalayan mix waffles he is an avid yarn hunter lol.
Rachel´s last blog post ..Episode 20 – Quickie

  8. I love the I-cord edging.
    Such a fun edging !

  9. Just curious, why two different threads, discussion and wip for the SSKAL? I love reading and seeing all the shawls. I had fun doing the first clue, and obsessive compulsive that I am I’ve started another.

  10. I’ve been on a garter stitch kick myself having done three shawls with garter. It’s so bouncy and cuddly!! But then again, I’m knitting a cardi in the round (with steeks) and that’s all garter too – just doesn’t turn out that way. Ah knitting, it can look so different depending on the technique.

I do love the Lucy cartoons — it’s a whole other talent you haven’t displayed for us.

  11. And I thought Lucy was largely disinterested in your yarn? Last night I was sitting on the end of the bed knitting, and kitty (size LARGE) decided he wanted to be a fur collar. So I left him there for a bit, and eventually he got tired of it and left. Unlike all those times when he ambushes me by leaping from wherever to be on my back. I think Lucy is better mannered than that – or just puts on a better act.

  12. Man, I am so loving the cartoons! Lucy is the cutest!

  13. cecilia david says:

I do not have not one cat that “hunts” for skeins of yarn but two.

  14. Midnite Baker says:

Love the color combo for your scarf-wrap or whatever you wish to call it. Lucy had the devil in her eyes with that skein of yarn in her mouth. 🙂 LOL!! M

  15. I love the garter…. Thanks for sharing your idea.

  16. Absolutely love those Colorado cant wait to see finished project.
jessprtwinsknitting´s last blog post ..Wrist warmer 1 completed

  17. Those colors are really nice together. And I giggled at the cartoon. Fun!

  18. anne marie in philly says:

currently knitting the “shawl of doom” (search for it on rav!) and am finishing the “mara” shawl. last month I finished a garter stitch log cabin blankie for my niece as a wedding present; 5′ x 5′ no less!!!!!

garter stitch puts me in a meditative mood and I don’t have to think about what I am doing, just go with the flow. great for listening to the baseball game on the radio too, or knitting on the train.
