My current work in progress:

Stornoway, designed by Alice Starmore from her book Fishermen’s Sweaters, knit in Frangipani 5-ply guernsey wool in the Aran colorway, on a 3.0mm needle.

I recently got on the review list for books and booklets from Annie’s (formerly Annie’s Attic) and received a booklet this week.

This is More Than a Dozen Hats & Beanies by Carri Hammett, a 48-page booklet with patterns for 15 hats. There are hats for men, women, and children. Here’s the thumbnail index:

The hats are all knit from either DK, worsted, or bulky weight yarn, and the models are all knit with popular, readily available yarns. The designs are cute, and the patterns seem clear and easy to follow.

There is a section in the front with basic techniques for knitting hats, and in the back, more basic knitting information:

Do you have hat knitting on your agenda for this autumn/winter? This booklet has patterns that will cover a lot of heads.

Who’d like my review copy?

To be entered in the drawing to receive this booklet, please leave a comment on this post by Sunday, September 2, 2012, at 11:00am Eastern Time. I’ll draw a name at random from the comments left.

Meanwhile, I am working on the left side front of my denim jacket.

Have you noticed a trend? Poncho, Felted Coat, Denim Jacket. I am knitting all outerwear items.

Since I haven’t worn a sweater indoors in years, I figured I’d start knitting things I might actually have a chance of wearing: jackets and coats for autumn and winter.

I’m in the planning stage for my project for after I finish the denim jacket. More outerwear!

Here’s my little princess, contemplating the need for outerwear.

  1. I would love to have this book of hats. I have five grandsons to knit hats for& and they love grandmas hats.

  2. Everyone needs a new hat once in a while – love to try new patterns. Appreciate your give-aways, sharing the wealth.

  3. laura sequeira says:

Me! Pick me. Or someone else. But I would like it.

  4. Barbara S. says:

Defiantly need a new hat for my daughter soon.

  5. I’m just starting to spin, and these small projects sounds great for handspun!

  6. Of course I’m knitting hats this fall. I have a whole bagful of yarns and patterns packed in my car already for the drive from Minnesota to Vermont! And, of course there are a lot of good yarn stores in Vermont, so I’m sure there are more hats there waiting to be knit!

  7. Kathy in Alaska says:

Yay for hats! Thanks, Wendy, for a chance to win. And your denim coat looks totally awesome.

  8. Many family members say they are ready for new hats-this came at the perfect time! Thanks for the opportunity! (wondering how blue your hands are now? But love the jacket!)

  9. Ooooo I love hats! So fun, so quick! PS I miss your cartoons!

  10. thank you for a chance to win this booklet!

  11. GeniaKnitz says:

Lucy already has the most beautiful outer- OR inner-wear anyone can imagine.
And I love knitting hats, so would be delighted to win the book.
Thanks for the chance to be entered into the lottery.

  12. Carolyn Zimmermann says:

Would love the Hats & Beanies Book.

  13. I’d like to throw my proverbial knitted hat into the ring!

  14. Jo morgan says:

Lasy year, our knitting group with help from the congregation knitted and collected 309 items for a charity called Metro Care Ring. I am always looking for inspiration and new projects to keep this amazing group of knitters interested and involved. Thanks for the drawing! Jo

  15. I would make good use of this book, knitting Hats for Sailors, who are probably sick of the one pattern I have been using over and over. Love your denim project, it’s going to look great!

  16. Looks like Lucy has the outerwear thing fashionably under control.

  17. The hats look cute.

I’m with you – I haven’t worn a sweater inside for a long time, but sweaters and sweater jackets are great for outside in fall (and even winter here in Northern California)

  18. Tina in NJ says:

I knit lots of hats and scarves for charity. It keeps my hands busy.
Don’t know what Lucy’s worrying about outerwear for; she’s got a fur coat!

  19. Looks like a winner and I like to knit hats.

  20. Hi Wendy! I have started my KAL for this summer…I don’t have much time to work on it, but it is comming along o.k. Last years turned out small. I put ties on the front of it to keep it on. This booklet on hats sounds interesting. Thank you.

  21. Looks like a great book(let?) and I have kids who just moved from So Cal to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, so they’re gonna need hats, right?? Thanks for the contest.

  22. I’d love a chance to win this awesome booklet as I have several friends in Chemo at present, all needing something to wear! Thanks for sharing.

Oh and I predict a cold winter this season so outerwear is a good thing!!! I am going to get busy on mitts and right now I am working on a neck warmer — the drawbrige. They work up quickly and can double as a hat. So all the cafeteria girls will get one for Christmas this year.

  29. Thanks so much for another wonderful giveaway. Hats are always my go to project for quick gifts. I also will use hat projects as palate cleansers after long or complicated patterns.

  30. Random Comment for Random drawing!

If this is a comment right, not a comment left, will it still get into the drawing?

Seriously, I’d like the booklet. Hats make for good stress-knitting, when your wrists won’t take anymore kitchen cotton.

  31. I just cast on a hat for fall, the Mairi Tam from your book. Always on the lookout for a good hat pattern.

  32. I think Lucy might find outwear a bit silly because she has her own coat. My cat would tear my eyeballs out if I tried to make outwear for her. I’ll just stick to knitting for me. Your coats are amazing.

  60. Interesting hat book!
Outerwear makes perfect sense. I never understand why people buy winter clothes and then everywhere you go, the heat system is on 80. My house is on 58, so I die in winter everywhere else.

  65. Your denim coat looks as if it is coming along beautifully. I know what you mean about sweaters. Growing up I was always cold because my family rented a flat that was heated by a coal furnace. I wore sweaters constantly. Nowadays I’m more likely to be found wearing a short sleeve tee in the middle of February. My extra poundage keeps me warm.

I love knitting hats – tams in particular – and am always looking for new ideas.

  66. Yes, please. I have more than one request for fun, funky hats! Thanks for sharing!

  67. Ronnie Granade says:
