Scandinavian Stitch Craft

I have another lovely book to review, this one not on the topic of knitting, but embroidery.

This is Scandinavian Stitch Craft: Unique Projects and Patterns for Inspired Embroidery by Karin Holmberg.

The book uses traditional Scandinavian embroidery techniques in a collection of projects (both clothing and housewares). There are thirty projects in all, and they all start with a plain item that you might already own, or could buy new. Using the techniques in the book, the author shows you how to embroider and embellish items to make them unique and beautiful.

Along with instructions for various techniques, the book contains templates for embroidery patterns.

It even includes sheets of tracing paper in a pocket inside the back cover.

The projects include kitchen items like towels, aprons, and tea cozies, and clothing from leggings to t-shirts to hoodies to babies’ onsies. Also included are cushions, wall hangings, and bags of various types.

The book provides a lot of wonderful inspiration. You could easily use the embroidery design from one project on something else, so there is a lot of room for your own creativity to grow.

Who’d like to receive my review copy?

  26. Kristiina Jacobs says:

What exquisite embroidery. I experienced a flood of nostalgia : my long departed Finnish mother, her accomplished embroidery that she had lovingly created and that i cherish in a few items we use at Christmas, the church services I attended as a little girl in our Scandanavian church, the rich smell of percolated coffee (not something we ever had at home) – so all these memories tumbled out based on the radiant beauty of these images… I love your site.. By the way am yet to come out of the closet as a knitter or embroiderer so maybe the book will inspire me to let my creativity loose this winter… Not that we have a serious winter down here in Australia! I also wouldn’t mind a cat come to think of it… But that will have to wait….thank you for a lovely site… I just stumbled across it! Lucky me!

  27. Judy J. says:

OK, I’ll try my luck on this one. I really have gotten to the point where I have so many knitting books that its got to be awful special and something very specific for me to even give it space in the bookcase, but I’ve been neglecting my embroidery life (which was the first real art/craft I ever did, all these decades ago, and I’ve been meaning to get back to!)

  31. With winters seeming longer, I’m thinking I need to expand my crafting skills. I would love a copy of this book to get me going with something new!!
