I am saddened more than I can say to have to tell you that my Lucy died earlier this week.

Lucy came to live with me in May 2003 when she was two years old. She died at the age of 12 — far too short a life.

Something I never shared on this blog is that Lucy had a number of fairly serious health issues. I had successfully managed her health problems for the past few years with a lot of help from a caring veterinarian, and up until this week she did very well. She was a happy and loving kitty living a good life. But I knew this time would come sooner rather than later, and when her health declined, it did so very quickly and suddenly. I said good-bye to my baby two days ago.

I am trying to take comfort in knowing that she had a wonderful ten years with me. She was such a special kitty and I’ll never forget her.

  1. My condolences in this difficult time. In my own small way I will miss Lucy too, I always loved seeing her pictures.

  2. Dear Wendy,

I am so sorry for your loss of Lucy. This just breaks my heart. We have all loved her, and have done so for years. We will miss her, that’s for sure. She was a beautiful cat, and it is obvious that she was very spirited and very much “Lucy” from start to finish.

I can truly “relate”, having loved and lost many dear ones (cats and dogs) and I know how much of a part of the family they become, so I know your loss is very hard. I hope the love that so many have had for Lucy gives you some comfort.

Take time to grieve, and then, even before you think you are ready, go find a new kitten or rescue cat to love. Lucy can never be replaced, she will live in your heart forever, but you will find a measure of solace learning to love a new cat.

Bless you Wendy, for all that you do for us.

  3. We will all miss your darling Lucy and, in fact, I thought of her as “our” Lucy. She will always be with you, always, always, always. What a precious kitty, and what a wonderful Mama you were to her for ten years. God bless you, and may God give you strength in the days, weeks, and beyond. What a blessing to have had ten years with such a sweet kitty.

  4. Amanda L. says:

I’m so sorry to hear about Lucy. I also lost 2 of my cats who were 5 & 11 late last year. It’s hard.

I’m sending many hugs to you. And know that Lucy will have Triton, Chloe, Zeus, & Thor for company on the Rainbow Bridge.

  5. I’m so sorry to hear about Lucy. Just remember she will always be with you because she lives on in your heart and mind. Godspeed, Lucy…

  6. So sorry to hear of the passing of your baby. I always enjoyed seeing her sprawled on knitting. Take some comfort in knowing that so many enjoyed her antics.

I know she is in kitty heaven right now.

  7. So sorry for your loss. I know how much you loved Lucy and I’m sue she did too.

  8. Oh Wendy, I’m so sorry. I loved hearing about Lucy and knew how much you loved her. Sending you love and sympathy.

  9. So sad to hear your news. I hugged my kitties in remembrance of Lucy. She will be missed!

  10. Pam Gardner says:

Oh Wendy I am so very sorry to hear of Lucy’s death. I know she was so very dear to you. Pets are like family and we grieve for them as we would a family member. I pray you find comfort through all your memories of her.

  11. Wendy- So sad. I’m a vet and deal with this every day, but it hit me like a load of bricks. I’m sure you did your best for Lucy, but we’ll miss her on the blog. Not as much as you’ll miss her, but we’ll miss her all the same. Take care of yourself, grieve as you must, and know that you’ve done well by her, even if it doesn’t always seem that that. All they want is love and a friend, and that’s what you gave her.

  12. I am so sorry Wendy… I can only image how you feel… Hugs to you…

  13. Goodbye, dear Lucy. You found your way to Wendy after a rocky start in life, but you sure did find the best home ever. Wendy ‘s strength, devotion and compassion carried you through your life gracefully, with dignity and abundant love. Now, off with you to chase the butterflies with my Lucky and all your new friends across the Rainbow Bridge! You will be in my heart forever!

  14. Deepest condolences. May all the wonderful memories you have of your time together bring you solace in the days ahead.

How long has Lucy been a part of our daily routine here at our home? When I had to order the ‘Lucy’ colorway from Blue Moon Fiber Arts it was because of your sharing in the blog. When I decided to order the Zoom Groom for our household it was on your recommendation. (Every time we engage in a zooming session my Zoe & I reflect fondly on your & Lucy’s suggestion & send a silent thought of gratitude winging your way.) The first circular knitting project I ever was brave enough to undertake was because of your & Lucy’s Pi Bed pattern. (Zoe overflows that beloved pi bed now but it’s still the go-to spot when winter rolls around.)

There are other kitty goodies that have enriched our lives thanks to your mention here in the blog. Not a day goes by that isn’t made better by something you/Lucy suggested. She’ll always be a part of your life. I just wanted to thank you for sharing her with us so she could be a part of ours.

  15. I’m so sorry for your loss. Thanks or sharing her with us.

  16. I am so sorry, Wendy, she was a beautiful cat. We’ve had cats in the past and it was always hard when they became too old/sick. I think of them as being in cat heaven. They give us so much joy while with us and they each have their own personalities. It was a good thing you did, taking in a sick cat. We can always find comfort in the good times, and the companionship they blessed us with.

  17. Kathy F. says:

Oh, Wendy, I’m so sorry you’ve lost your lovely girl.

  18. paula henderson says:

It is so hard to lose a great companion like Lucy. You have my deepest sympathy.

  19. Cindy Lynne says:

My heart goes out to you Wendy on your loss. As a pet owner of 4 dogs and a kitty I know there is great comfort in all the wonderful years you had with Lucy. We will miss her also, I loved to hear what she was up to or not in your blog. God Bless!

  20. Midnite Baker says:

Oh, Wendy, I’m so sad for the loss of your furry kidlet. Will miss seeing her antics on your blog posts. Am sending you Happy Lucy Thoughts as she passes over the Rainbow Bridge.
Have sent my kidlets a Lucy prayer to welcome her to her new home. Take Care. Mary & Sparky and my Over the Rainbow kids, Callie, Chris & Ginger, Mitzi & Bumper.

  21. My heart goes out to you! It’s so hard to lose a pet. You were such a wonderful mom to her and gave her a great life. Hugs to you;O)) Rest in peace, Lucy.

  22. I am so sorry to hear of Lucy’s passing. We too are grieving as we lost our little Patty in May. Patty, a shih tzu, was our son’s college dog…lived with four guys for her first year. I always said she was raised by wolves! She came to us at just over a year old. She was just short of 15 when she was just too sick to continue. She was quite a character and we really miss her. My advice: get another kitty soon. Won’t be the same but will be just as special in its own way.

  23. Marsha C. says:

I am so very sorry for your loss. Lucy brought us all so much joy through your blog, and it was obvious that she was an important part of your life. Thank you for sharing her with us. She will be missed but not forgotten.

  24. kuhnitter says:

I am so sorry to hear about Lucy’s passing. I looked forward to reading about her, and will miss her, too.

  25. I am so sorry to hear that Lucy is gone. I will miss reading about her, and can only imagine the loss that you feel. Thank you for loving her for ten years.

  26. I’m sorry to hear about Lucy. She seemed like a wonderful cat, and it’s always too early to lose our fur friends.

  27. GeniaKnitz says:

Oh, dear Wendy, I’m so, so sorry for your loss. As a longtime cat owner, I know how hard it is to lose a feline companion. It sounds as if your Lucy had a happy life with someone who loved her very much. But a beloved cat leaves a big hole in your heart when she slips away. I will keep you and her in my thoughts.

  28. Kim Veach says:

Lucy was very lucky to have such a loving and caring person in her life. You were blessed to have each other. I will miss her wonderful photos.

  29. I am so sorry. I also just had to put my Beagle Baron to sleep after a long bout with cancer–it was so very hard, but also the right thing to do. We do so love our pets, especially when we have to let them go.

  30. Rebecca says:

I am so sorry for yor loss.

  31. So sorry. I will miss her, it was so nice looking at her in your posts. And I understand you, I have to cats, too and one is with me since 1998.

  32. I am so sorry for your loss….Each time you posted, I always would go to the end first to see what Lucy was up to and what kind of a photo she would be posing for… I am saddened by your loss…

  33. Oh Wendy, I am so very saddened to hear that Lucy has passed on. Her presence on the blog was a delight and you know that she inspired me to look into Ragdolls when we needed to get an indoor kitty. Without Lucy, I wouldn’t have my beloved Fitzy. You gave her the most fabulous life and she was your precious little mate. Thinking of you both today xxx

  34. Celaina says:

Oh Wendy, this is devastating. I will always remember how she helped you block your shawls. A lot of times I would open your blog and skip down to the end to see what pearls of wisdom Lucy had for us knitting lurkers. She was gorgeous and inspired me to rescue my own Siamese ball of fur. Thank you for sharing her with us. She will always be remembered by her many fans.

  35. Dear Wendy,
I have followed your blog since before you had the lovely Lucy, her antics and fluffy georgeousness inspired us to get a ragdoll of our own when our 20 year old Tasha-cat passed on. My son, daughter and I send you our heartfelt condolences, she was a very special friend to you and to many others who never got to give her a scratch behind the ears.
    Warm regards,
    Ann, Alex and Ellen

  36. Alexandra says:

Wendy my heart is broken for you. I have a kitty the same age and worry constantly about her. What a wonderful life she had with you loving her as much as you did. My prayers are with you.

I understand that your grief must be very deep. Sending you my warmest thougts and hope you find comfort in the good memories you have of her. You are lucky though to have blogged about her and therefore have so many nice pictures of her left.

  45. I am so sorry Wendy, so glad you had ten lovely years with each other

  46. I am so sad to rwad this, and sorry too, like everyone else I loved reading about Lucy as much as reading about your knitting on the blog.

  47. Lots of hugs for you Wendy, as you’re living difficult moments.
My last dog passed away at 12 years last year and I think of him everyday, I miss him.
I knitted my kitty bed because of Lucy’s 8 years ago (and translated it in French) so I follow her adventures since a long time, I’m very sad to hear she’s gone.

  48. Catgeek says:

I am so sorry for your loss. While we take care and nurture our four legged family members, we know this day will come. It takes a special person to care for those with medical problems and I know Lucy appreciated everything you did to make her time with you the best. In the last four months I lost both of mine and I share your grief. Even though I don’t normally write I found that writing all the special things and good memories I had helped me through the grieving process. I was crying the whole time but that helped too. I felt it was a celebration of their lives and what we had shared.

My healing thoughts are with you.

  49. I am sorry for for the pain you feel. Losing a pet hurts I will keep you in my thoughts.

  50. Oh Wendy, I will miss seeing her here! I am so sad with these news. She was a beautiful, sweet baby. All my sympathies are with you now.

  51. Dear Wendy
I’m so sorry to read about Lucy. You gave her the most wonderful life and I thank you for sharing your Lucy with us.
Thinking of you during this difficult time.

  53. I’m so sorry for your loss. She was a lovely Kitty and I always looked forward to her picture/comment on the blog.

  54. I am so terribly sorry to hear that. Lucy touched our lives through your blog and we will miss her also. Lucy will leave a hole behind her but she filled a place in your heart that will stay filled. She was lucky to have you in her life. Thank you for sharing her with us. Please accept my condolences and a cyber hug for your loss.

Amy and Allie send you kitty hugs and hope you will accept their condolences also.

  55. My thoughts are with you, Wendy. I’m so sorry to hear about Lucy – she was such a special character. I too have cats, and I lost my Jess at only 3 years old. She was poisoned and died very quickly. that was 3 years ago and not a day goes by without me remembering her, and how funny she was. xx

  56. Charlotte says:

Everyone else has already said it so much better than I could. I am also very sorry for your loss. I bought my now 10 year old yorkie when she was six months old & it only took a few weeks to find she was not healthy. After numerous tests, the vet diagnosed a portosystemic shunt. Despite the expense, I chose not to return her to her owner because we’d already “bonded”. It’s been constant health scares & seizures over the years, even though she’s been on a low protein diet , but I still don’t regret my decision.

  57. I am so sorry for your loss.

  58. Seamyst says:

I’m so sorry, Wendy. I’m keeping you in my thoughts.

  59. I’m so sorry for your loss, Wendy. They are such sweet, gentle creatures and we love them so much. I really enjoy reading your blog and seeing your photos of your work and your fur baby. Take solace in the fact that you’ve had ten beautiful years with her and that she was a great companion.

  63. So very very sorry to read about Lucy. She had a wonderful life with you and was so loved. It’s never easy to say good bye to our little companions. We had to say good bye to one of ours last week as well.

  74. I am so very sorry for your loss. I was in shock when I read your post. I fully understand what you mean about it not being enough time. I will be thinking of you and keep you in my prayers. Thank you for sharing Lucy with us.

  79. I’m so sorry. Kitties are such wonderful companions; we’ll all miss hearing about her. We’re mourning with you, as much as an internet community can do so. And 12 years is too short. I hope your heart heals in good time.

  80. Carol D (2mchfn) says:

Oh, Wendy, my heart hurts for you! Our animal family is just important as (& sometimes more than) our human family. Thank you for sharing Lucy with us for all these years.

  83. Anne Marie B says:

  84. Wendy, I can’t express how sorry I am to read about Lucy’s passing. I’m writing this with tears in my eyes. I don’t think God created a creature more noble than the cat and when He knows we need the best of friends He sends us a cat to fill our hearts and arms. Lucy will always fill our hearts and we are thankful you shared her with us through the years.

I am so sorry,Wendy.I lost my dear Stella,an 11yr old calico, just last week. Her passing was sudden and unexpected, the loss sharp and clear.she was born in the bottom of my bedroom closet as I held her mother’s daughter named her and laid claim to her,so Kate was the one who held Stella as she drew her last breath, then laid her to rest beneath the trees.whether they are with you from the moment of birth,or join you through the process of rescue/adoption,they are members of your family,a part of your heart forever….Lucy will always be with you, living on in the memories of your life together. And she has become an icon in the world of knitting bloggers and readers, where she will go down in history and become part of our collective memory as the cat who shared your creative experience…I have several more furry friends who grace my life with their presence…May you also be graced again in the future, when the time is right and you are ready…God speed, are already so missed…..Blessings to you, in the sweet memories …<2
