Mystic Shawls

Last week I got a review copy of Mystic Shawls, a pattern collection by Anna Dalvi. right now it is available as an eBook only — hard copies will be shipping later this month.

Anna Dalvi is a prolific designer — if you look on Ravelry, you will find that she has 103 pattern posted there. This book is a collection of 14 lace shawls that were all originally part of knit-alongs (KALs). I pause to contemplate this: Anna Dalvo has hosted 14 shawl KALs.

These 14 shawls are Anna’s “Mystic” Collection — all have Mystic in their name. And they are all drool-worthy. I say this as someone who is extremely picky about lace patterns: one little thing that seems “off” to me can ruin a whole pattern and I won’t consider it. so this is amazing: a book with 14 patterns and not a dog in the bunch. (Apologies to all the dogs out there. I am a cat person.)

The shawls are in several shapes: triangle, rectangle, square, circle, semi-circle, and crescent, so there is something for everyone. Most of the patterns are knit from laceweight yarns, with a few written for fingering weight and one for sport weight. The lace motifs are all charted (I can’t even begin to imagine the proofreading nightmare that would ensue if they were written out line by line) and the charts are large and clear. The designs are beautifully photographed by Caro Sheridan and there are multiple views of each design so you can really see what each one looks like.

You can see all the patterns on Ravelry, here.

I’ve had a hard time picking my favorites. Mystic Embers jumped out at me immediately:

I love how the diamond-shaped motif is placed into the rectangular shawl — so different!

I also love Mystic Roses:

Such a lovely large shawl!

And Mystic Delight is . . . well . . . a delight!

I love the mixture of color and lace here.

Go see all the designs on Ravelry! Which are your favorites?

You can purchase the eBook via Ravelry from the above link. You can also purchase a copy from the publisher, Cooperative Press.

You can also enter my contest to try to win a copy of the eBook. 🙂

To enter the contest, please leave a comment on this post telling which of the 14 shawls from Mystic Shawls is your favorite. To be eligible for the draw, leave your comment by 11:00 am Eastern time on Sunday, June 22, 2014. At that time the Random Number Generator will choose a winner.

Must dash — Loki and I have lots to do today!

  1. Holy wow, what gorgeous shawls! Mystic star is particularly stunning and so is mystic fire, but really I’d happily knit them all!

  2. quiltercaroline says:

These shawls are all stunning! I think my favourite is Mystic Fire but it was a difficult choice. Thank you

  3. Judy Morin says:

They are all so beautiful, it’s hard to choose. Since my birthday is coming, up, I’m sure to purchase it as my “gift” to me. But I think by favorite would be the Mystic Star, although the first one done would be one of the rectangles, either Mystic Earth (in another color as I don’t wear brown) or Mystic Embers.

  4. We, they are amazing!! I think I like Mystic Delight, although part of that may be the colors! And Mystic Embers is very lovely too.

  5. Mary Tole says:

Loki is such an adorable ball of fluff. I am sure he appreciates being inside with the air conditioning keeping him nice and cool. There are several patterns that I like be I think Mystic Delight leads the pack.

  6. Bekah D says:

Thank you for introducing me to Anna Dalvi’s work! I’ve been doing shawl pattern searches on rav for weeks, now, and finally got settled on a couple, but somehow managed to miss her, entirely! I’m going to have to add some of these to my queue.
All of them are beautiful, but I’d start with Mystic Air and Mystic Desire.

  7. Mystic roses is on my ravelry queue.

  8. Lynne in Florida says:

I like “Embers” myself, though it would be a lot easier to pick the one I like the least. There are so many yummy ones in the book.

Loki is such a snuggly looking cat.

  9. Mystic embers is my favorite, but they are all beautiful . Thanks for the give a way.

  10. Charlotte says:

I have two nearly tied for favorite – Mystic Star for it’s overall design would be first though & Mystic Water for it’s trees around the edging. 🙂

  11. Marilyn says:

Mystic Waters. I have spent many wistful hours looking at waves on the beach at the lake. This shawl will capture that feeling. Once I am finished my ” takes all my time right now” stealth project, I will get it. Thanks, Wendy for steering me towards this designer.

  12. Martina Norelli says:

Hard call, but I think I was drawn to Mystic Fire more strongly. They are all, as you say, gorgeous.

  13. Since I have not made a circular shawl yet, I am drawn to Mystic star. I agree, they are all lovely!

  14. I have not seen her work before, absolutely stunning. From the Mystic collection, my favorite is Mystic Embers, but Mystic Midsummer and Mystic Air also caught my attention.

  15. Mystic Fire jumped out at me. Disclaimer: the only lace shawl I’ve ever completed was one of yours! Thanks for bringing this book to my attention, and for the giveaway opportunity. Miss Hinky offers Loki a head-boomp.

I have a hard time picking a fav but I think Mystic Air speaks to me. Thank you for the opportunity to win this lovely book! Loki keeps getting cuter and cuter. I always look forward to reading your blog about your knitting, but equally love seeing the boy lounging around waiting for you to stop knitting and give him attention. So cute.

  18. I love the Mystic Waters shawl, I think it is a favorite, but do have to agree they are all beautiful!

Hi Loki….. don’t play too hard.

  19. What a hard choice! I really like Mystic Desire, though.

  20. Dorothy in Kentucky says:

I love them all but Mystic midsummer caught my eye. Loki you adorable cuddly boy you are just too cute.

  21. Susan Forman says:

Such works if art. I would probably start with mystic embers!

  22. Kamilla Mazanec says:

I absolutely love Mystic Delights. Might even try it in monochromatic colors.

  23. I think they are all amazing by I’m fond of Mystic Star

  24. Jenn Thompson says:

As pretty as the colorwork is, I think my favorite is Mystic waters.

  25. knittingdancer on Ravelry says:

My favorite shawl is Mystic Diamonds because I love diamonds and my birthstone is diamond.

  26. Louise Waugh says:

Mystic Star. They are all beautiful but I am a sucker for knitting circular shawls and that is the first one I would knit of the bunch.

  27. Courtney says:

    My favorite is Mystic Star!!!

  28. Lynne Wolters says:

The Mystic lace shawl series is amazing. Looking at and appreciating each of the shawls in this book, my first to knit would have to be the Mystic Delight.

  29. Mystic light is my favorite!

  30. All of them are so beautiful!! Mystic Star is the one I.Must.Make. Never mind it will take a year….

  31. Mystic Midsummer Wreath!! Love crescent shawls. The Triangulars are pretty but since I am a short person I don’t wear them well. The point will hang half way down my legs on some. LOL
Judy´s last blog post ..My Grandson is Home!!

  32. It would have to be Mystic Delight. Color combining is not unheard of these days, but this arrangement is so unique – I love it!

  33. Mystic Star….love circular shawls.
    Thanks for another wonderful give-a-way.

  34. Mystic Meadows is beautiful, though it was hard to choose just one!
Lauren´s last blog post ..Shining Our Light Brightly

  35. Abby call says:

I have to say the cover Mystic Star is my fav but love them all. I can see tablecloths, curtains, etc made out of these lace patterns. I would have to make them all cos it is hard to pick just one.

  36. Mystic star is my favorite, and two of the shawls were already in my favorites. Thanks for showcasing such gorgeous patterns!

  37. Wendy P. says:

Mystic Star caught my eye right away, but am I brave enough? I might try Mystic Diamonds as a warm-up. They’re all beautiful.

  38. Not fair… I have to chose one!? OK… I love the Mystic Rose a bit more than the others…

  39. Mystic Meadows – I think rectangular stoles are super easy to wear.

  40. This book looks great! I’m loving Mystic Air. Thanks for introducing me to a new designer, Wendy!

  41. Mystic Star is my favorite followed closely by Mystic Delight

  42. My favorite is the Mystic Star.

  43. Mystic star is my favorite!! ravid: amymercer

  44. This is hard! I think Mystic Earth would be the one I would knit first. I love the different lace patterns used and I have very few rectangular stole type shawls, so it would be a great addition to my shawl collection. 🙂

  45. My favorite is Mystic Fire — what a beautiful pattern! (I’m a cat person too!)

  46. We have to pick just one?? They are all so beautiful I could cry.

But if I had the book, the first one I would make would be Mystic Fire. I guess that makes it my favorite, right? 😉

  47. These are all fabulous designs and if I had to pick one I think I’d pick Mystic Desire although I would need someone to hold my hand and accompany me through the whole process.

  48. I love Mystic Fire–the drape of it in the photos on Ravelry is perfect! I also love Mystic Delight for the playful use of colors to highlight the different portions of the shawl. Thanks for hosting this contest!

  49. Anna’s work is amazing, have you looked through the Ancient Egypt collection? It’s lovely.

I have Mystic Ice, Mystic Waters, and Mystic Light in my faves but haven’t bought the patterns yet, so maybe the gods of the random number generator will favor me…

  50. I really love Mystic Earth. I would like to make all of them. There are a couple of them really call to me.

  51. It’s hard to pick just one, but it would have to be Mystic Midsummer Wreath. They are all gorgeous!

  52. Annastasia says:

All of them are so pretty, but I really, really like Mystic Delight. However, Mystic Star is my favorite! I’m rapidly becoming addicted to circular shawls!

  53. Melissa says:

Loving several of the choice as something I would knit. Willing be having some trouble blocking some of my choices do to the postage stamp that is currently home. I’ve decided to choose what I would knit first – Mystic Midsummer Wreath. Wonderful collection and designs. Thank you for sharing with us.

  54. They’re all fun but I really like Mystic Waters!

  55. Mystic Desire is fabulous.

  56. Sara Smith says:

Ooooo, loving these! Thanks for pointing out another designer to add to my favourites, as well as more patterns on my wish list! I’m struggling to choose but appropriately for the time of year here in the sunny Highlands of Scotland, I think I’ll go for Mystic Midsummer! (however, have you seen Cheshire Cat from the Fairy Tales collection!!!)

  57. That was really hard to.choose! I finally came down to Mystic Air – love the circular shawl!

  58. Moonaugust says:

Mystic light and Mystic fire are my favorites. That’s as far as I can narrow it down!

Soooo…when are you doing your mystery shawl KAL for this summer? For once I have time to do it!

  59. Vasiliki says:

    Mystic Roses is lovely!

  60. Oh my!! Those are breathless designs. I have 820 yards of a rose garden colorway that I don’t know what to do with…at least I didn’t until now! I’ve made so many things for others over the years and now I’m knitting things for me! I would love to use that gorgeous yarn for one of those beautiful shawls.
You are so generous and I keep trying, one of these days….one of these days.
Thank you so much for a delightful blog, the best way to start my day. Hugs to Loki!!

  61. Carol Lee says:

Gorgeous patterns. Mystic Embers is my favorite, although I think I’d enjoy working on most of them. Thanks for the chance to win!

  62. Diane Vanderwerff says:

Mystic Star – because it looks like a challenge! Maybe I could try to knit them all in a year – hahahaha!

  63. They are all great looking but I alos love the diamond shapes in the Mystic embers shawl. I would love to have the ebook.

  64. I love the Mystic Embers! I really like rectangular shawls.

  65. Linda R says:

Thank you for the contest! My favorite is Mystic Midsummer Wreath. I like the crescent shape!

  67. Wow! What a difficult choice! After careful deliberation, I think my favourite is Mystic Ice – love the knotwork panels, though all of them are stunning

  68. Kendra Struthers says:

While many of these are beautiful, my very favorite is Mystic Delight, with its interplay of color and lace.

  69. Kristin/HLMauera says:

I’d have to say that Mystic Delight and Mystic Air are my favorites. Mystic Air has a wonderful pattern and I have the perfect blue cashmere to go with it. Mystic delight is fanciful and colorful- I’d have to work harder to come up with the right yarn but it would be worth it.
I think this would a be a delightful birthday gift since Saturday is my 40th birthday.

  70. Lorraine says:

I think I have to go with Mystic Star although Mystic Roses is beautiful. Who am I kidding? I love them all!

  71. I can’t decide if i like Mystic Air the best, or Mystic Fire… but they’re all gorgeous. and it goes without saying that I’d love to win a copy of the e-book!

  72. Susan Tofilon says:

    Mystic Diamonds is my favorite!

  73. I’m not a big fan of lacey shawls, but these really are wonderful. I think Mystic Embers is my favorite – but it’s difficult to choose. If I win the book ‘ll have to make one of them – wait – only one?

  74. Karen M says:

They are all lovely. My fav. is mystic earth but mystic roses comes a close second.

  75. Heather K says:

Mystic Water or Mystic Star would be the first I knit, but they are all loverly!

  76. MIchelle B. says:

So hard to choose just one favorite. But, if I must, I pick Mystic Waters!

  77. These are really beautiful.
Mystic Midsummer Wreath is my first choice. It will be my first crescent shaped shawl.
    Thank you!

  78. Mystic Diamonds!

I’m liking the two color jobs!

I’ve loved a starry night sky since I was a little girl (I’m not saying how many years ago that was :-), so my favorite is, naturally, Mystic Star.

Truth be told, I *really* liked almost all of them, and I didn’t dislike any of them.

  82. Love the last photo you showed…was that Mystic Loki? Oh, I can’t pick that one?

Then I’m going to say Mystic Roses. The center back and side edging panels are wonderful.

  83. Mystic Ice has to be my favorite, which is surprising since I generally prefer rectangular shawls.

  84. I have several of these patterns and the yarn to make them from the Yahoo Group days. I think my favorite, still is Mystic Star. That is the one I am most tempted to cast on for of the ones I have

  85. Mystic Delight has been on my to knit list for a while now, but I think Mystic Air just won that contest!

  86. Deserat says:

I’ll join again in this giveaway – like them all.

What a breathtaking collection of lace shawls! I totally agree with you & am the same way when it comes to lace knitting. These are absolutely gorgeous! Thank you for introducing me to this collection & for the opportunity to win the ebook!
