My current work in progress:

Seaforth designed by Alice Starmore, knit in British Breeds 5-ply Guernsey Wool on US 3 needles.

Color Wheel Knits

Because I am working on a non-public project most of the time, with just a row done on Boxy here and there, today I’ll show you a book instead of my progress.

This is Color Wheel Knits by  Veera Välimäki, the designer behind the hugely popular Color Affection Shawl. (I may be one of the few knitters left who has not knit one!)

The book was previously published in Finnish, so you can look on Ravelry and see the patterns and projects knit from them — a bonus over a brand-new book that may not yet have many projects.

It is divided into four sections, by color: Blue/Green, Red/Pink, Yellow, and Grey/Brown. There 22 patterns total: for sweaters, hats, mittens, and wraps for men, women, and children. My faves:

Green Cables, a very sweet child’s cardigan.

Stripe and Cable Mittens — these would work up very quickly for a last-minute gift.

Freezing Point: a unisex pullover with an interesting collar treatment.

Beetle Cap, a very cute cap in both child and adult sizes.

The publisher has generously offered a free copy of the eBook for my giveaway. Who’d like it?

To be entered in the drawing for an eBook of Color Wheel Knits, leave a comment on this blog post by 11:00am Eastern Time, Sunday, June 28. The winner will be chosen at random at that time.

Summer Knitting

I keep forgetting to say — I’m not doing a Summer Mystery KAL this year. Too many things eating into my time this summer.

The other night we had a huge thunderstorm. Is Loki bothered by storms? You be the judge:

  1. We were at the ballpark during last night’s thunderstorm and it got a little intense! I’m glad Loki is unphased by such occurrences.

I’ve knit three Color Affections and have several more of her patterns queued on Ravelry. I’d love to win the book.

  2. Ooh, I love Veera’s designs (although I never FINISHED my Color Affection). Very excited by this book!

  3. Lisa Leavitt says:

I would love to win a copy of Veera’s new book! It looks very interesting.

  4. CynthiaY says:

I really love the look of the pictures you shared, and I’m excited to see and try my hand at knitting a few of these. They look fantastic!

  5. Beetle Cap is super cute, but Loki is cuter. I would vote he is unbothered by the thunderstorm. Very unbothered.

  6. Would love to have it 😉

  7. Melissa says:

Sorry to hear that you won’t be doing a MKAL this summer. Do hope things calm down for you. It’s lovely of you to offer a copy of Color Wheel Knits to one of us.

  8. I’m haven’t knit Color Affection either, but i do have the pattern. Veera’s patterns certainly are fetching. Please toss my name into that hat for the book. Thanks.

  9. Wendy TC says:

I dk itted a Co.or Affection and plan to knit another one. That being said, I would love the book to try some of her other patterns. Thanks for the give-away. Mr. Loki seems perfectly calm…

  10. I have been WAITING for this book to come out in English. Love her work!

  11. Looks like fun patterns!

Thanks for all the lovely Loki photos.

  12. Virginia S says:

I’ve been eying this book, trying to decide if I should break down and buy it or not. Thanks for the opportunity to win one.

  13. So excited to see this book out in English!

  14. I bought the color affection pattern but have yet to knit it. Love the Beetle cap.

  15. Beautiful! I’d love to win!

  16. MamaSue says:

These patterns look so fun! Love the Color Affection design and those you showed.
That Loki is one fluffy cat.

  17. Helen King says:

These patterns look amazing! I would love to win this book.

  18. I have read your blog for a long time and love all of your projects. I wish I knit as fast. I am also two projects behind on your summer knit KALs so it’s OK with me if you don’t do one this summer. LOL. And I would really like this book.

  19. Michelle Crowhurst says:

No KAL!? I mean it’s not like you have a life, job, knitting persona, kittie, life even….

Ok, guess I’ll forgive you! I would look love to achieve an iota of your knitting…

My ravelry queue is my bucket list….

  20. I want it just for that adorable hat! Thanks for the contest and the blog. 🙂

  21. Love that adorable hat! Thanks for the contest and your blog.

  22. Susan (sjanova) says:

Well, Color Affection is on my mental queue but I haven’t knit one (yet) so it would be lovely to have other patterns she has designed to distract my attention. (How did you know I JUST TODAY went through my summer mystery shawls that you have designed and said, oh nothing for 2015? But why didn’t I knit 2012? What distracted me that summer? Oh, right. That stuff. So if I want, I could knit that this summer and just pretend.)

  23. I just looked this designer up the other day on Ravelry. There are several patterns I’d like to try.

  24. I’m another avid knitter who hasn’t knit Color Affection yet. Not that I don’t love it – I do.
    This book looks great.

  25. I would love the pattern for the beetle cap. It’s adorable.

  26. Kristen says:

    I absolutely LOVE Veera’s patterns!

  27. Tiffanie says:

Oh, Loki, you are such a floofy kitty. I wonder if he was dreaming so the thunderstorm just added some background noise. When our home had kitties running around, we called our big boy kitty “Thunder Paws” because he made so much noise as he galloped around the house and crashed into things. He would sleep through thunderstorms, too, but his sister kitty always hid under the bed or couch. They BOTH hid during fireworks, though.

  28. Margaret says:

Looks like an interesting book. Thanks for the giveaway.

  29. Wow – gorgeous patterns! I’m going to have to pick up this book. So many tempting projects!

  30. Debbie S says:

So pretty. Would love to win

  31. Ruth Porter says:

Your summer KAL will be missed. Perhaps I can knit something from Color Wheel Knits instead.

  32. I would love to win this book. The patterns look really great. I am another knitter who still needs to knit a color affection! One of my cats gets very scared by thunderstorms, but her brothers are like your Loki and could care less! Thanks Wendy!

  33. Sandra Kerr says:

I haven’t done Color Affection yet either! Love the book too.

  34. So little time, so much to do! I will miss you this summer, but I can use the time to get caught up (?) as well:). I am always up for an interesting book though.

  35. Kathleen Kennedy says:

What a fun book to have!

  36. Jeanie Babbage says:

Those garments are perfect for my to-do list! I love your freebies

  37. Michelle says:

I have finished Color Affection, and I love wearing it. I have several of Veera’s patterns in my favorites also. I would love to win this book.

  38. Margaret M says:

That cabled sweater is so cute!

  39. Phyllis G says:

I would love to win Veera’s book – please pick me!

  40. Lee Long says:

    Sounds like a great book.

  41. Anne SD says:

The reasons I’d really love this: I can’t speak Finnish, and I have 3 kids home with me for the entire summer. I need some fiber zen to get me through this!

  42. I have not knit Color Affection either – probably because I can’t decide which colors to use. Many of the patterns in this book look very interesting.

  43. Sarah M says:

Love that beetle cap. Definitely adding this book to my wish list!

  44. Theresa says:

This looks like a very cool book, hope you pick me!

  45. I’d love this book! I took a class with Veera here in Portland at Happy Knits this spring. She is a delight.

  46. I haven’t knit the color affection either. These patterns look lovely. Thanks for the offer.

  47. Elizabeth H. says:

I loved making “color affection”. I’d love to knit some of her other patterns as well. Especially love the “Beetle Cap”.

  48. Well there are two of us who haven’t done Color Affection, not that I haven’t bought what I think will be the perfect yarn and then end up using it on something else, lather, rinse, repeat….
I drool over those I have seen on friends.

  49. Sue Horowitz says:

I may be the second only person who has not knit the Color Affection Shawl. [Actually, just saw the comment above mine, so maybe that makes me the third person. . .] In any event, I have admired the shawls others have made and think there are some wonderful patterns in the book. Would love to be the recipient.

  50. Sue Horlander says:

I would love to do Color Affection. I’ve purchased yarn to Drachenfels. Thanks for a chance to receive this book.

  51. Very cool patterns. I am looking for my next project – this would help a lot!

  52. Ruth hibberson says:

Looks like a lovely book. Love those Loki photos 🙂

  53. What lovely patterns…..thank you for the opportunity.

  54. Loki is the epitome of lazy summer nights 🙂

My Color Affection is my favorite fall accessory!

  55. Many patterns to like in this book. I have the yarn and pattern to knit Color Affection — just haven’t gotten to it yet.

  56. Anne Marie B says:

Looks like a great book. I love her designs!

  57. Ruth Ann says:

I’d love a copy of this book!!!

  58. Looks like a great book! I’ll miss the KAL this year, will look forward to it next year.

  59. Pauline says:

Glad that Loki doesn’t mind bad storms, our dog was always petrified when we were in Virginia. Would love to wins copy of Veera’s book!

  60. I’ve made several of Veera’s patterns and have more queued. I really like her design sense, so, obviously, I’d love to have her book.

  61. Sounds like a very interesting book.

  62. Loki is just adorable! The book looks good too!

  63. Kris Peters says:

Will miss the Mystery KAL but winning this book might help ease the pain.

  64. CaroleP(ohio says:

Winning this book would be such a treat!!! Have not done any patterns other than the ones in English (I like the look of these). Thanks for offering it. Also have had the pattern to knit Color Affection for too long to say, embarrassed.
Glad Loki is so calm in a storm. Babbs disappears at the first hint of thunder. Lately I have almost gone with her……

  65. I’ve not yet knit a Colour Affection either, it’s on my list though. I have to say, both my girls are like Loki with storms; don’t care as long as it’s not interfering with their pursuits.

  66. Juanita Williams says:

the Beetle Cap jumped put love it hope I win

  67. Midnite Baker says:

I like the guy knit sweater. Your post came in at the right time. I bought a gallon of strawberries from farmer’s market and needed a break/excuse for some down time. 🙂 Give Loki a tummy rub from me and hope the rest of your week is great! M

  68. Amy Schulze says:

I love Veera’s designs! Love to win the book.

  69. Sarah Fuller says:

I have purchased several of her patterns from Ravelry and particularly like her clear designs that seem to have a bit of an edge.
Would love to receive the book!

  70. I’m a huge fan of Veera’s work. She is such a talented designer. I would love to be the winner.

  71. I love Veera’s work – it would be awesome to win her new collection!

  72. Vera and Jojo are my kryptonite, so i’d be delighted to win this book.

  73. Finish knitting, an awesome collection – love it ♥

  74. Will I be lucky this time? xx

  75. Always looking for inspiration!

  76. I would be so happy to win this! I have not knit a Color Affection either. I live in Finland and knitting pattern books in English are hard to find, so it would be great to win a pattern book by a Finn, in English, especially since English is my first language! 😀

  77. I’m a Spanish girl and I like to discover designers all over the world. I love Veera’s design and i love loki!!! 🙂

  78. Robin D says:

I would love to have this book. Thanks for the chance.

  79. I’d love a copy of this book. (I’m a bit kitty-deprived a the moment, so I’d also like to be able to reach out and rub Loki’s belly…sigh.)

  80. Oh those pesky time eaters… wise of you to cut down on your commitments. Life is never fun when you over-extend yourself and you don’t end up helping anyone else either. Your eBook offer sounds wonderful, but knowing me at this time I would only end up looking at all the pretty pictures and never end up committing to any of them (I’m really in the all garter stitch or stockinette lane right now. I went out and got your previously offered garter stitch book and am loving it) so don’t enter my name in the giveaway. Hope your time is joyful this summer with whatever commitments you do have!

  81. This book looks really interesting. Vera’s patterns always have a style of their own

  82. Janice Lavoie says:

I started a Color Affection but it’s in time out for now because I didn’t like how the edging was coming out. I love Veera’s designs though and own several of her patterns. I also love how Loki is oblivious to the storms, my cat is too.

  83. Sounds like an interesting book. And have you had Loki’s hearing checked?

  84. A book by Veera? How exciting!

  85. The book looks way kewl.
Glad storms don’t bother Loki. My fur babies are pretty cool with them too.

  86. Would love to win the book!

My animals aren’t bothered at all. One dog doesn’t even mind walking in thunderstorms, although I draw the line there. Our 100-pound German Shepherd, who sadly passed away in March, hated thunderstorms. She would crawl into the tiniest space she could to hide from them.

  87. I would love to have the Color Wheel Knits book.
    ….love the kitty comments…

  88. Tracy Beck says:

I would love to be entered for the book drawing. I really need to add to my knitting library, I only have a couple books . . . please, please please ? Love Liki too, sending him kisses!

  89. Cathy Wright says:

I have made more than a couple of Color Affection shawls and they are the most complimented of my accessories! I would love more of her patterns

  90. I’m about to start my second Color Affection!

  91. I haven’t knit the Color Affection either.
    Count me in.

  92. OMG, he fainted!!…no, wait, he’s ok. Just “playing dead” like our kitties. I’m working on my second Color Affection, learned a few things from the first one (which will likely land in the frog pond). You, young lady, are late to the party! I would surely like this book, as so many of her ideas are interesting. Thanks for offering, and keeping us all in the Loki loop!
Anna´s last blog post ..Kicking off the 250 Workday Outfits Challenge!

  93. So pleased to see that these patterns are now available in English!

  94. Poor little Loki! He suffers so!

I haven’t knit the color affection, yet, either. It’s queued up, but so are dozens of others!

  95. Don’t feel bad, I haven’t knit a Color Affection either! This looks like an amazing book, thanks for all the giveaways 🙂

  96. I have knit color affection…just a few more rows to go. It is in hibernation because I ran out of one yarn and am looking for a match.
Bummed you are not doing a summer mystery KAL… My friends and I join in each summer. But there is plenty of other knitting to be done anyway!

  97. Julia S. says:

I have a color affection that I knit almost three years ago. This shawl is my go-to shawl for cool/cold weather days. I wear it constantly throughout the fall and winter here in Seattle. There are a number of other Veera patterns that I would love to have time to knit but knitting is hard to fit into a busy school schedule. Although I have to say, your choices of faves from the book are all very enticing knits for me to dream about!

  98. Yes, I’d love a copy of the book.

  99. I had not seen Color Affection until you linked to it. Now I have another shawl I must knit! Glad to hear Loki isn’t bothered by thunderstorms. My kitty hides in the closet at the first rumble. Thanks for another giveaway!

  100. I love my color affection and I love patterns with cables. Hope your RNG picks me. I haven’t been able to buy a new knitting book in a while.
