Love to Eat Them Mousies

Love to eat them mousies
Mousies what I love to eat.
Bite they little heads off,
Nibble on they tiny feet.
-B. Kliban

Remember Kliban cats?

For some reason, those lyrics keep running through my head as I work on my current knitting project.

I am making a pile o’ catnip mice for a charity project.*

I have mentioned in the past that Loki has absolutely ZERO interest in catnip, so he is not bothered as I stuff mouse bodies. He is showing a mild interest in the bag of mice, but I think that is more because they are cat-toy-sized than because they contain catnip.

Just in case, I am knitting a new mouse for him so he won’t feel left out.

*I am using my nose-up catnip mouse pattern to knit these critters. The pattern is available for sale in my Ravelry store for the low low price of $1.25. All payment I receive for this pattern is donated to animal charities.

Regular knitting will resume shortly!

  1. Shirley Gallagher says:

My Ragdoll is not interested in catnip either. Do you think it’s a breed thing?

  2. Kath Foley says:

Life was good until I moved 26 years ago, and the packers “misplaced” my Kliban cat poster with the guitar-playing mouse singing those very words! Thanks for reminding me of the glory of that song!

  3. Kath Foley says:

Oh, funny! I of course meant guitat-playing cat. Your mice must have gotten to my brain!

  4. It’s too bad that Loki can’t learn to relax…

  5. Your pile o’ catnip mice for charity is so cute! I bought your pattern a while back and haven’t made it but now I will as soon as I finish the baby sweater I am knitting for my granddaughter Melissa’s baby due in January. My cat Misty hopefully will love the mouse.

  6. Love Kliban! I have his books, and I also have a very old, faded MomCat pillow, with a cat print backing. I keep thinking I should re-create it in needlepoint.

The mice are adorable, but our current feline totally destroyed a cat bed in two days, so I’m reluctant to provide him with one of these.

  7. I do remember Kliban cats! And this particular cartoon, with the guitar-playing cat. I need to make some of these mice for TomTom; he’ll practically take me by hand & lead me to the jar of catnip when he needs a “fix”. We’ve started using a catnip essence spray on his favorite toy, and dropping it in the catnip jar while it’s still damp — take it out to release Chaos!
CeltChick´s last blog post ..Goodbye and good riddance

  8. I love Kliban cats! I didn’t know that you could still get merchandise! Loki is definitely a lover, not a fighter, or as we always used to say, “He’s a houser, not a mouser”.

  9. I love all the Kilban cats and I have the guitar player on a coffee cup. Also had a shirt with him on his stool playing the guitar but my niece is now the proud ower of that shirt. Still have many mugs with different K. cats including the one strolling in the red sneakers. Oh my, I have two calendars in my house right now that are Kilban cats!

  10. Thanks for prompting the memory of the masses of mice my mother used to knit for the church Christmas bazaar and one for every cat in the family as well as those of friends. I still have several well loved fuzzy ones that are still played with by our kitties.

  11. I love Kliban cats! I actually have a mug that has those lyrics.
