The New Arrival

Look who came home with me this week!

I call him Bernie

Since I seem to have renewed my interest in sewing, I’ve been thinking about getting a modern machine. So on Thursday I bought this lovely Bernina B475 QE.

I did a bunch of research before choosing a machine. Some of the standouts of this machine:

  • Totally automatic button holes
  • A GIANT bobbin that holds 70% more thread that regular bobbins
  • Knee control that raises and lowers the presser foot

I spent a couple of days playing with it and yesterday made my first project:

Butterick 6024

It’s a simple pattern and everything went very smoothly! I’m looking forward to many more sewing projects with Bernie.

Pre-Bernie last week I completed these projects:

Butterick 5741
Folkwear 117
McCalls 5912

And Loki worked on his camouflage skills.

You can’t see me

  1. Is this like the kid that shows up at the door with a dog or cat and says
    “Look what followed me home!”?

I’m sure you will both enjoy it and use it well.

Mine is much older, pre-electronic displays, and I know I’d love the larger bobbin capacity, but I can’t find an excuse to replace mine. And I do love the knee lift.

I have an old mechanical Bernina i love. My favourite though
Was my 830 Bernina. The moving company cruched it moving from Panama to Alaska….not an easy feat as it was solid metal. I like mechanical. You new machine is beautiful though!! Loki you are well hidden there!! Sweet boy!!

  3. I have a Bernina mechanical machine acquired after the Brother Quilter’s Choice decided to have a fit. I love mechanical, no computers involved and still has 20 decorative stitches and automatic buttonhole. Enjoy your new toy!

  4. Wendy–when they say “Nothing sews like a Bernina–Nothing”. Ain’t it the truth. I love mine, a B790 Plus and am still learning some of its features.

  5. Wow. Congratulations! You seem to excel at all the things!!!

  6. Sharen Warren says:

You’ve inspired me to organize my sewing room and oil my machine. I’ve enjoyed sewing many of my own clothes since I was 10, mostly because I love textiles and being able make something somewhat unique. I have a couple of great smock patterns too. I hope you enjoy your Bernina for many years.

  8. Linda Yancy says:

I’m drooling over Bernie…he looks “well built”!! I’m really enjoying all of your sewn creations. I would love to wear them. Sending Loki’s pic to my sister who is a cat person. She’ll love his camouflage.

  9. Linda Yancy says:

Hey Wendy, you haven’t posted for 3 weeks. Is everything okay? Or have you just been so enamored with Bernie that you haven’t had time to show us what you’ve created? Let us know how you’re doing.
